I disagree that singers today model themselves on Streisand. Streisand was one of those very emotional singers from the 50s and 60s, more like Judy Garland, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel and Ray Charles than anybody singing now. She was an instrument of expression. Mariah Carey and today's singers model themselves on Aretha Franklin, who used her voice as an instrument. Carey has a great voice. But she can't make me laugh or cry. She's too busy singing. She isn't allowing emotions to run through her.

um i go to different countries as a singer and Streisand is far more well known. It is always Elvis, MJ, Sinatra, Barbra and sometimes houston. As for sales, economy was different then. I disagree that singers today model themselves on Streisand. Streisand was one of those very emotional singers from the 50s and 60s, more like Judy Garland, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel and Ray Charles than anybody singing now. She was an instrument of expression. Mariah Carey and today's singers model themselves on Aretha Franklin, who used her voice as an instrument. Carey has a great voice. But she can't make me laugh or cry. She's too busy singing. She isn't allowing emotions to run through her.

As for pop singers today, most of them skip the emotional side of singing. To my ear, there's the pianists Diana Krall and John Legend. Emotion coming from a few pianists who perhaps set aside vocal agility for feeling. But perhaps I'm forgetting someone.

@skye009 As far as I know today, Woriah Carey cannot even sing live in a natural singing voice with such ease! Whoriah's vocals has no staying power. Whoriah is only good in faking her voice. I agree with the comments regarding the superiority of Streisand's voice over everyone else on the music scene today. The singers today sound hollow and mechanical whereas Barbra 'acted' her songs out with unrestrained passion. Stretching a word into 9 syllables while sounding like you're about to sneeze is not talent - Barbra had and still has the most amazing voice.

Sinatra pop era, disco, etc.) Five versatile women who continue to influence the pop scene since their inception are Madonna, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. Their era of music has been cited by many as the most influencial. Evident in Lady Gaga, Britney, Christina, Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce, Rihanna, and the list could go on forever.

@skye009 she never sang sintara era she was in the 60s lol. As for singing style NO white female sang in that way and then pull back to a mezza voce. If you can think of any epic singer who sang like her before her good luck. She has sung thru many genres and Celine and houston followed streisand's epic vocal ballads. If you ever see a broken heart singer following WH, watch the ending of Funny girl and you will see who did it first. Also her versions of cry me a river etc are original.

Her voice is all technique.And that has been working for her for over 40 years, so good for her. Barbra LACKS the soul that Mariah puts in her songs (If It's Over, Make it Happen, Fly Like a Bird, etc.)

Um, because Streisand is a far more gifted singer (and all around performer). Do you really think Mariah will end up with something like 65 albums of which over 40 are gold and 13 are platinum or multi-planinum and will have #1 albums in 5 consecutive DECADES? Hope this clears it up for you. Oh, and Joy Retard, it's StreiSAND, like sand on a beach; not StreiZAND. Jeeez.

um i go to different countries as a singer and Streisand is far more well known. It is always Elvis, MJ, Sinatra, Barbra and sometimes houston. As for sales, economy was different then. She still have the most #1 albums by any female artist. MC is amazing vocally but her voice gave out in 15 years. Streisand didnt 4 40 years. I am a fan of MC but I have to admit that w/ she lacks feeling on stage. Even Houston who I don't think is superior, can out perform MC due to interpretation.

Why did I tell people since Vision of Love that she is the best technical singer? Why do I defend her as an artist writing for herself v getting writers to make hits like WH? I'm not only a fan, I respect her craft pass that of just a singer. 15 years meant the 15 years she kept her full voice. She does not have her full capacity for 20 years, it was 15. It may come back!
