  • Your voice and style make me think of Billie Holiday. Great voice, great rendition.

  • awesome

  • Madelaine ....mi preferida. Bello, muy bello!!!! y enormemente dulce y dolorosa su voz

  • I can't stop listening to this song....so good.

  • she had me with the ''drink up baby...'' and I hear her for the first time. beautiful.

  • What the hell happened to the Marlene Dietrich video montage that had this playing over it? I CANNOT be the only who saw that. It was amazing.

  • @ragemanchoo82 I saw that too ....It was really beautiful....Probably Youtube deleted it .

  • My anticipation for the next line to come, she surprises me. I'm a ridiculously huge Smith fan but I prefer this version. It was never a Smith song I gave much attention, he's written far better, but Peyroux would make me listen to this more than I do.

  • This isn't Lady's cover of "Between the Bars"?

  • Love this

  • What a hard song to cover! Great job! Bravo!

  • I love the video of an older Paris more than the cover. But it's okay.

  • oh man this is good stuff

  • Absolutely breathtaking song. I love both versions.

  • Not bad...but not even close to the great Elliot!!!

  • Love her love her! Amazing music, the most amazing smile. Keep making that great music!

  • gorgeous singer !!!!!!

  • reminds me of yeal naim

  • Love her music, love her voice, love it all.. Almost love myself right now! :D

  • smokin aces 2

  • She's definitely a Billie Hilliday's reincarnation :)

  • Liked the voice ... awesome

  • don't get much better! gotta LOVE her!

  • i love that girl

  • i was just arguing with people about covers of this song and how they completely pale in comparisson to the original. In a way i ate my words. This cover is brilliant. What it does, is take the saong, musically and vocally, and shifts it slightly to the left. its kind of a re-interperatation. Elliots version was very "inner" whereas this opens up the song more. Hard to describe in ways, but brilliant work. Such a hard song to cover, done exceptionally. Prefer the original, but this has a place!

  • @LexiKei I agree with your critique, this is a great cover. But, have you heard The Civil Wars cover yet? check it out

  • lovely version ☼

  • I LOVE this song

  • very original and creative cover, I like it

  • i love her...she's so fuckin groovy

  • so cool and smooth

  • I think I might actually prefer this. first time hearing it

  • The cover is beautiful. I mean that...but this video is not what I expected to see. It doesn't capture the song.

  • well i wasnt expexting that as an elliott smith cover im not gonna lie. it was pretty cool though :)

  • The thing that strikes me when I hear this cover is that Elliots lyrics and style of performing are what makes his music so special, this womans talent is beyond doubt yet I still feel it loses some of the simple natural intensity with its overblown musical arrangement, I do like it for the fact it brings Elliots songs to a new audience .,theres many better covers of this song on youtube with much fewer views.. RIP Elliot smith .

  • @hebdomad3710

I agree comepletely. I found myself unjustifiably WANTING to hate this song in the same way that a kid would hate to see a new man with his arm around their mothers shoulders after his dad passes. But i can't let my love and passion for elliot smith look down on other artsist for wanting to express themselves.

This cover was beautiful. I appreciate it in many ways. I like elliott's more. but this is a great song to turn to if my mood is different.

  • beautiful voice

  • Brilliant.

    .

Any chance of a video for 'A Prayer' by Peyroux?

    .

    Best wishes!

  • absolutely. The singing and arrangement are exquisite. Its on the level of the Byrd's covers of Dylan, or even better, Hendrix. Even better than that. Its so true to the original song, and yet it has it's own voice. This is true artistry..

  • MP understands the english language. That is by no means universal among American singers, even the good ones.

  • this version's better

  • i dont understan the video

  • hey i cannot to understand this mode to criticize who not appreciate something. maybe i'm here by an accident and isn't in my taste, why ever this cultural racism? i don't like it, i don't like what you like i like other things my things. point. that's all. out.

  • I first heard this cover when I was sitting in a cafe on the shores of Skala Eressos, Lesvos, Greece. One of the most beautiful places I've ever been. I have always loved Elliott Smith's original, but this cover is equally as beautiful. And I have a fantastic memory to go along with it.

  • 48 people don't know what good music is.

  • It's a good song!

  • I just love this song. The vocal and music is just a bit disturbing, very cool.

  • Elliott is really difficult to cover because he had that "fragile" voice that really added something to the song...still a nice cover, at least it's not trying to imitate.

  • beautiful.

  • sort of speechless...

  • @activate124 Yeah, LOTS of Billie in it.

  • who made this video?

  • Surabhi!!! Its you!!

  • Wonderful cover!! Lonely as hell.....

    Need better quality though

  • i love this song!!!

  • cover do elliott smith (heart)

  • This is beautiful! I really like how she covered this amazing song.

  • Always brings a tear to my eye

  • is this the original video to madeleine`s" between the bars"?

    in any way: it´s great!!!

  • Damn, this is fantastic. Cheers to Peyroux for doing this...there should be more jazz covers of Smith tunes

  • I thought it was a lost jazz "standard", which is a tribute to her interpretation, and to how strong Elliott Smith's song is.

  • Madeleines re-interpretation is sensational. Her timing, her phrasing... the languid despair... it is a work of pure ART!!!!!!!!

  • Okay this is very amazing. I like the instrumental aspect of it. And I like the vocal aspect of it. But I don't feel like the two FULLY go together well. Which, in my opinion, is what makes it really quite amazing. I just feel she plays with the tempo of the vocals a tiny bit more than is necessary to move the song.

But hey, thats just me. Again, I really like this a lot!! Both versions of it (original and this cover) are works of art.

  • Her voice has this air about it like its coming out of a gramophone. I love it. This version is one thats definitely one to be admired, however, i don't think anyone could ever out do the simple beauty of Elliott's original version in my opinion.

  • Madeleine Peyroux's cover of Elliot Smith's "Between the Bars"

  • Nerd fight!!! :)

  • why does one song have to be better than the other? They're both different and beautiful in their own respect, fuck this competition shit.

  • wow her voice is ridiculously amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • kind of awkward arrangement! nice voice though haha

  • MAGICA

  • Still prefer chris garneau's version

  • well the lyrics are brilliant....when i hear elliotts i relate a bit more, but when i hear hers ...its weird empathetic towards a girl in a video....its an artistic recreation that really nailed it

  • she's not the next Billie Holliday- if I wanted to listen to her I'd type in "Billie Holliday"

  • I really love the feel of this song it has so much emotion. The way her voice moves is just so awesome. I'm speech less each time

  • My God did she makes this song her own! Notice how she lags the beginning syllable of many of the words. Being conditioned by hundreds of listens to Elliott's version I keep feeling myself leaning in to my computer in anticipation. Love it!!!

  • Love this version (if not the video - sorry). It brings out a real passive-aggressive menace in the lyric.

    "I'll keep them still..." indeed.

  • Brilliant, brilliant work. She's the second coming of Billie Holiday

  • man i always miss elliott in the winter

  • (and the first chords tried to be -- Portishead?) ;)

  • this song was written way before portishead was making music

  • The song - yes, this version - no. BtB by Madeleine Peyroux comes on „Careless Love from 2004. Portishead's first album was released in 1994

  • same song.... same notes

  • no, it wasn't

Elliott Smith wrote it some years back

  • to heavy IMHO

  • good cover, captures a different feel but still beautiful and shows you its a timeless song

  • A wonderful interpretation of a class song.

  • Alright. But comparisons with the original would just be unfair. Elliott Smith's original is pure soulful melancholy. Hard to set that as a parameter anyone else can ever touch again.

  • i half agree! i wouldn't say it ruins it, but its sort of annoying! like having to sneeze and then losing it, if you know what i mean

  • what a beautiful song♥_~

  • Sublime. Madeleine's timing is comparable to no other living singer... only Ella Fitzgerald comes to mind. This woman is so incredibly musically gifted... I never tire of her intelligent, sincere interpretations.

  • This woman has one of the smoothest voices I've ever heard! Great instrumentals accompanying her as well.

  • its a mood which is a compliment.. its 3 am when thoughts creep in from introspection

  • Best cover ever.

  • It's a brilliant interpretation

  • now that s a must for me, so tender

  • Anybody who fails to appreciate this cover is deaf. It's brilliant. Of course it's not Elliott, but it is a lovely tribute.

  • i totally agree i love elliott but you cant fail to appriciate this, its lovely

  • It is a beautiful version in it's own right, however I feel she failed to capture the haunting aspects of elliott's style. Her version is more melancholy then haunting, but I'm sure that's what she intended..

  • Un chanson merveilleux - et pour lequel elle a une voix parfait. An amazing song - for which she has a perfect voice.

  • Ah, Paris.

  • all good

  • lovely, lovely

  • i can definitely feel elliott more...more empathy in his song.....this kinda creeps me out, honestly....it kinda sounds like background music to a horror movie where they're just filming the stalker/killer...but, cool persepctive....definitely respectable

  • This makes it sound like this song was created in the '20's. Great interpretation!

But touches me nowhere near in the way Elliott Smith does.

  • how can anyone say this version is better? without eliott smiths version, this wouldnt even exist. therefore, the original is always better.

  • i have to disagree, i hear covers that are hella better than the original. you are right that the original created subsequent songs, however, that doesn't mean the original is the best.

but this song is def not better than elliott's version, thats for sure.

  • I think her version is best :) It has this creepy but beautiful tone...I mean that in the best way possible!

  • LOL yeah right, she sounds like a drunk lounge singer. I can here slot machines in the background haha

  • yes exactly!

  • Hardly so, I will for ever and always think Elliott's is the best. But I think this has a somewhat done up, but more down low feel to it which is splendid.

  • febre..tédio,..solidão..prazer..piano..voz..

  • my ex girlfriend used to love madeleine peyroux. with me being a huge elliott smith fan this was a strange yet pleasant discovery.

  • magnifique

  • Love the style she gave it, though the articulation of words is not pristine.

  • BELLA

  • Love this version of the Video!

  • French crap facscinates me.

    thanks daniel brou.

  • holy sh....

  • good god, this is good.

  • it's a billie holiday copy!

    but a little more scolarized...

    such a balls this version....

  • how could someone say this?

  • Makes me feel very Jean Luc Goddard

  • Me too. By the way, I think it's spelled "Godard"

  • wow. the piano cuts through my heart...hauntingly beautiful. A testament to Elliots song writing. I like the way she takes her time....

  • Awesome. It's good to hear another dimension to the song.

  • that girl in the video is hott

  • Very dreamy, not the same as Elliott's at all, but still lovely.

  • I enjoyed the music to this song, although the vocals were not of my taste, especially when compared to Elliott Smith's original. I do have to say though, that her vocals give the song a different feeling or mood which is an interesting spin.

Good good, however Elliott's will continue to put me into awe as it is great great!

  • the original is far better, much more intimate and vulnerable

  • she sounds a bit like billie holiday at times

  • I always thought she sounded like Billie holiday, from the first moment I heard.

  • I am so in love with this to the point of tears

  • really good video :) love itt

  • MAGICO

  • Madeleine Peyroux does a great rendition of Elliott Smith's Between the Bars. I would also recommend Metric's version... which I like even better.

Regarding the video, I will respectfully say it doesn't seem to embrace the song's mood/feel. But I appreciate the effort.

  • Awesome cover. It really captures the intended feeling while still making it different. Well adapted and a beautiful rendition of a beautiful song.

  • While I agree that this version is beautifully done, calling it better then the original is a bit of a stretch. Im sure Madeleine would agree with me. After all, any musician knows the purpose of a cover isn't to out do, but to pay tribute to the original.

  • i love this

  • Poor poor Elliot Smith.

    Thank you for the music.

  • oh..elliot...

  • Better than Elliots. Very cool.

  • I agree.

  • I like it. But I like Elliot's better.

    ^_^

  • this song make u fele like u need to get drunk to be with somebody becose u not in love but the sex its great thats whats wrong with me its that ok or i got some problem i like some advice please thank u.

  • sadly, i understand

  • love how dreamy this song it.

  • don't like the cover. way tooooooooooooo slow... and it sounds kinda odd.

  • the chords are just hypnotizing, i didn't expect to like this version

  • nice cover, i'll always thought that in a cover you have to make yours the song using your own style, that way the cover is a tribute and not a copy. this is an excelent example

  • sounds way different but it has that jazz feel. same words, different type of haunting.

  • :( i dont like it.

  • Did I ask you something? i really DONT want to know what you think... sorry
