Your kid needs to find out himself the bad effects of being hyper. Teach him the golden rule and such. It's better to conversate the reasons for rules and such in a fair way. I used to be one of those kids. Medication didnt work for me.
As the video "freedom from conscience -- bullying" points out, the education system in the USA is primarily concerned with conformity. That is why if a kid sticks out he gets abused by his/her classmates since the authoritarian nature of the system actually creates a social setting that demands everyone look and act the same.
Even his therapist noticed improvement and I never told him I was putting him on fish oil so I didn't put it into his head. I told him after he mentioned the improvement to me. So..if you're a parent dealing with ADHD look into it, it can't hurt. Google the study so you can read for yourself. Granted some kids have it much worse and need medication, I just wanted to share my experience. Hope this helps for those that are looking for alternatives. :)
Turns out children with ADHD have very low levels of omega3's (DHA & EPA) due to the poor diets in the USA which is essential for brain function. I read that you should get liquid fish oil that is distilled and purified...Carlson's is a good brand and depending on weight will depend on the dosage. I started out on 1/2tsp a day and then moved up to 1tsp a day since June. He weighs about 60p. Knock on wood I have seen major improvement, he's not perfect but he is better. Cont'd..
I figured what can fish oil possibly do but i'll give it a go. I read about a study done in Australia that showed improvement in kids with ADHD after a 30 week dosage was given, and no improvement in the children that were given a placebo but then they were given the omega3's and after 15 weeks they started to show improvement too. So I figured the worst that could happen is my kid would have nice hair/nails and good cholesterol levels. Cont'd...

I wouldn't say that Frontline -The Medicated Child is a documentary which is promoting the use of drugs for kids. It clearly documents the gradual decline in the kids taking all these meds. in terms of subtext, unstated assumptions and negations, yes the doco leaves out interviews with vocal opponants of drugging kids and most of the Drs assume these kids were sick int he first place, but, I believe, the Kids' stories speak for themselves and the abhorrance of it all is obvious to the viewer.

Nothing wrong with these kids. Every person is just made up different. They want us all to be the same. We need to develope a culture that nurtures and addresses the varying needs of people and they will all be ok.
but medication is proven effective in adults, and i have seen the positive changes that medication can make in some children. one boy was really violent, aggressive, his parents tried everything first before at age 12 they had to put him on adderell because after exhaustive tests it was evident that he had ADHD, they tried diets,they tried councelling they tried special programs nothing worked, with the medication and councelling he has really improved not all kids need it but some really do.
@uching A doctor cannot say if a drug will damage or help more. Is it really right to allow the well being of an individual to be dependent on a gamble. Maybe your right. Maybe some kids need drugs...or maybe they just need better counselors, "programs", and diets. We as a whole do not KNOW everything therefore we have not TRIED everything. @uching Well after experiencing this same thing myself, I can say that it solves nothing. Diet is good but the diet they give is not the proper one. As far as meds, they only dull the senses and suppress "problems. All meds do is "sweep it under the rug" but the "dirt" doesnt stop collecting and it makes an even bigger mess that requires more "sweeping"-more meds. I have been diagnosed with bipolar and add and the drugs are not good im aware of that. But Im in the position where I dont know where else to turn. If I go unmedicated I become really impulsive and unproductive. Any alternative solutions?
@boricuamm707 i can tell you now. going without meds and learning to control yourself instead of being controlled is EXTREMELY HARD and is close in comparison to a personal hell. Even when I stopped taking prescriptions i went to weed cigarettes and drinking to calm me but you let go of your crutches and realize you can walk on your own that feelings is amazing and is well worth the hell endured through "training and exercise"
@ophiuchus1130 Trust me I know about going unmedicated. I got diagnosed in February at 17, Im 18 now. The 2 years before that all I did was smoke weed and cigs. Socially I had no problems at all, but I was getting in trouble with the law and at school. I didnt want to listen to anyone. I think in order to go unmedicated Im going to have to wait a few years, because right now is when I need to be productive and get my life going.
@boricuamm707 I wont tell you how to live cause thats up to you but I can tell you(from my experience)the longer I allowed myself to be "controlled", the harder it was for me to gain it back. I was diagnosed with "SEVERE" ADD and ADHD when I was very little(later bipolar). I had more than enough things that I could have given reason to just keep taking the drugs but thats not what I wanted. Trust me, if I could do it, so can you. Never just give up on what you want if what you want is right.

pharmaceutical solutions in medicine are somewhat rediculous in nature, they sometimes cure the 1 thing they were meant to but can cause 100's of side effects, its kinda like curing the disease by cutting the persons head off.
I'm a Ph.D. student in neuroscience (I study the brain and mental illness). People with mental disorders DO have brain changes. And meds change the brain too. Biology plays a role.
BUT, I do believe that meds may be distributed TOO freely. Things go bad for a few people, but some people are helped by meds. And some people are OVER medicated. The real problem is that people want to fix things with pills alone. It's cheaper (see insurance industry) and supposedly "easier" to just pop a pill.

There are many weak people who don't understand exactly what you mean. I do! I know many children who are medicated by their parents at the suggestion of their know-it-all drs. Phooey to all those drs. These children, themselves, have complained to me that they felt horrible under the medications. They still have the same symptoms of ADD or ADHD, etc. without the medications except that they are suffering the effects.

I was first diagnosed with ADHD when I was about 7. Later, after some prescribed drugs, I was diagnosed with bipolar and anti-social disorder.
In reality, looking back at it, I was bored with the rate that classes plodded along in school.
Ritalin, Lithobid, Paxil, etc. were all prescribed to me in my youth. One medication (I don't recall the name of it) would knock me out for 8+ hours, leaving me feel groggy all day.
I now live with the long term side-affects, as a result of Psychiatrists' medicinal experiments with me, that inhibit my ability to become who I feel as though I am meant to be.I am learning how to overcome some of the adverse side-affects instilled from early drug damage.
My advise for those that have gone through what I have: "Know Thyself" Once you recognize a trait in yourself that you want to change, make a conscious effort to do so, and you will succeed. Focus on the positive, and know that your thoughts create your reality.
Thank God for the internet and these types of outlets that allow you to spread the word about this evil. Hopefully enough people will become aware of this BS and reveal the true nature of these greedy bastards who stoop so low as to harm innocent vulnerable children for profit.

the idea of these drugs are to alleviate symptoms only while on it.afterwords it actually does more damage then if any good. they want obedient,dumb down robotic people so when you take these drugs,your conscience slowly deteriorates therefore it keeps you from questioning your government. they also dont care about your health in fact your only a death statistic in their eyes which to them is a great thing its what they want. and doctors are only puppets in the bigger picture.
I decided to go on adderall at age 18. I had been diagnosed with ADHD very young. In the next year and a half i went to school, learned what i needed to learn (no thanks to class) quit adderall, and got myself a specialized, relatively well paying job for 20. They say some take psychedelics and go nuts because they cant fit there experience into every day existence. Adderall is no different. I notice extremely high but realistic expectations for myself, resulting in "bi-polar" behavior.

I had medication screw me up. I was prescribed an anti-depressant when I was 11, I became suicidal and I became a mental hospital patient. When I was at the hospital, I was given new medication, I gained so much weight and now I have a huge appetite. I have better medication now....6 freakin' years later.
You bring up the real problem here - so many children are poorly medicated. You should have been watched extremely closely so that suicidal thoughts would be stopped immediately, and it would be clear that you were on the wrong meds. Gaining weight is also not acceptable as a side effect. Your dr should have switched meds then also. It takes some time to find the right meds, but it goes quickly with a good dr. Some kids need this, bottom line.
that's what sucks. We need to accept that some kids are suffering from early childhood depression, and we need to do more research on this, instead of pretending it does not exist. Best wishes to you.

You should google "Yoism schizophrenia" and read Robert whitakers book "Mad in America", among other things I'm sure. Brain scans of people with and without "schizophrenia" are irrelevant for many reasons, as is heritability (All human traits are heritable). I've watched this twice and finally went to watch that PBS video. Once I saw Brain Matters talking their garbage on the Dr. Phil show, I just had to put my head in my hands and sigh. Just some social worker sitting there making things up, repeating verbatim what she's been told to say without any real understanding of medicine... then they get their applause and you just wonder what the hell is wrong with everyone. It's almost as if everyone but the kid is the one with the mental problem.
I have ADHD and Adderall XR actually helped me a lot, but I stopped using it because I can't be dependent on a medication for the rest of my life, ya know? I tried regular Adderall, too, but that made my heart race and made me feel really weird. My family is very against psychiatric medication of any kind and don't believe ADHD is real, so it took me a while to get it recognized, but when I did it made a lot of sense looking back at my behavior even when I was like 5.
Don't me wrong, I think over medicating children is wrong, especially when psychiatrists are always pushing the latest drug. In my opinion it should be the opposite. Push the drugs that have been used the longest and we know some of the long-term side-effects. But, I have seen Adderall work miracles for me. For the 1st time in my life I felt like things slowed down in my head and I could actually relax. If someone has ADHD a lot worse than I do then it might just help them.

Yes, but you have to remember that stimulants work the opposite way in people with ADHD. If a regular person takes it, it will be like that, but in someone with genuine ADHD it can calm the mind down because it's already naturally acting as if it was on a stimulant... if that makes sense.
Zoloft kills people, go to the AMA's website and look up the unbiased trials. Have your parents look too. It's not safe for adults, much less children. Suicide and homicide rates while on zoloft are anywhere from double to triple...

My best friend in H.S. started taking ritalin at age 6, he quickly moved on to adderall, this was all for "ADD". All that was really wrong was his mother didn't have time for a hyper kid. At age 25, STILL on Adderall, he had a severe psychotic break, began talking to ppl that didn't exist, saw "demons" wherever he looked, and attempted suicide 5 times in one week. All because his parents didn't feel like dealing with a hyper child. These drugs WILL destroy your life, it's just a matter of when.

I was on heavy medication for sedation, for bi-polar, schizophrenia, add, depression... other things too. 3 years ago when I went off of them, I realized that I had part of my life and creativity stolen from me. If you're like 95% of the population, you meds are causing your problem in the first place. The drug industry has created an army of patients/customers. Its TRUE that you'd probably go manic without them, but its because you began taking them in the first place. Find a nice quiet padded room, quit your meds and many months later, you'll be mentally stable.
Most of my friends who were put on meds by their doctors were on street drugs to start with. They lied to their doc to get more meds..

Even his therapist noticed improvement and I never told him I was putting him on fish oil so I didn't put it into his head. I told him after he mentioned the improvement to me. So..if you're a parent dealing with ADHD look into it, it can't hurt. Google the study so you can read for yourself. Granted some kids have it much worse and need medication, I just wanted to share my experience. Hope this helps for those that are looking for alternatives. :)

Turns out children with ADHD have very low levels of omega3's (DHA & EPA) due to the poor diets in the USA which is essential for brain function. I read that you should get liquid fish oil that is distilled and purified...Carlson's is a good brand and depending on weight will depend on the dosage. I started out on 1/2tsp a day and then moved up to 1tsp a day since June. He weighs about 60p. Knock on wood I have seen major improvement, he's not perfect but he is better. Cont'd..

I figured what can fish oil possibly do but i'll give it a go. I read about a study done in Australia that showed improvement in kids with ADHD after a 30 week dosage was given, and no improvement in the children that were given a placebo but then they were given the omega3's and after 15 weeks they started to show improvement too. So I figured the worst that could happen is my kid would have nice hair/nails and good cholesterol levels. Cont'd...

My son was diagnosed with ADHD at 7 by a neuro child psychologist. I had suspected since he was about 3 but when things got bad in school it only further validated my suspicions. I was one of those people that said ADHD doesn't exist, it was just bad parenting but I eat my words now. It's run in its own chaotic way by its members who meet regularly in the chat room and it's a great place to seek and provide help and support, make new friends and even just have a laugh. I wouldn't say that Frontline -The Medicated Child is a documentary which is promoting the use of drugs for kids. It clearly documents the gradual decline in the kids taking all these meds. in terms of subtext, unstated assumptions and negations, yes the doco leaves out interviews with vocal opponants of drugging kids and most of the Drs assume these kids were sick int he first place, but, I believe, the Kids' stories speak for themselves and the abhorrance of it all is obvious to the viewer.

but medication is proven effective in adults, and i have seen the positive changes that medication can make in some children. one boy was really violent, aggressive, his parents tried everything first before at age 12 they had to put him on adderell because after exhaustive tests it was evident that he had ADHD, they tried diets,they tried councelling they tried special programs nothing worked, with the medication and councelling he has really improved not all kids need it but some really do.

@uching A doctor cannot say if a drug will damage or help more. Is it really right to allow the well being of an individual to be dependent on a gamble. Maybe your right. Maybe some kids need drugs...or maybe they just need better counselors, "programs", and diets. We as a whole do not KNOW everything therefore we have not TRIED everything. There is always a better way to help. Drugs solve nothing. Drugs only cover up and hide a "problem" which only keeps the "problem" from being solved

@uching Well after experiencing this same thing myself, I can say that it solves nothing. Diet is good but the diet they give is not the proper one. As far as meds, they only dull the senses and suppress "problems. All meds do is "sweep it under the rug" but the "dirt" doesnt stop collecting and it makes an even bigger mess that requires more "sweeping"-more meds. And the doctors...LOL.....DONT EVEN get me started on that one. LOL! They're almost worse than the drugs,

A parents actions(as well as the actions of all) affect the building blocks that child needs to create a new state of being to live in this world. What is the most important state? None technically because all states are co-dependent but I tend to put more value in the emotional state. Why? Emotions are our drive and motive to our thoughts and actions....

@ophiuchus1130 Trust me I know about going unmedicated. I got diagnosed in February at 17, Im 18 now. The 2 years before that all I did was smoke weed and cigs. Socially I had no problems at all, but I was getting in trouble with the law and at school. I didnt want to listen to anyone. I think in order to go unmedicated Im going to have to wait a few years, because right now is when I need to be productive and get my life going.

@boricuamm707 I wont tell you how to live cause thats up to you but I can tell you(from my experience)the longer I allowed myself to be "controlled", the harder it was for me to gain it back. I was diagnosed with "SEVERE" ADD and ADHD when I was very little(later bipolar). I had more than enough things that I could have given reason to just keep taking the drugs but thats not what I wanted. Trust me, if I could do it, so can you. Never just give up on what you want if what you want is right.

I'm a Ph.D. student in neuroscience (I study the brain and mental illness). People with mental disorders DO have brain changes. And meds change the brain too. Biology plays a role.
BUT, I do believe that meds may be distributed TOO freely. Things go bad for a few people, but some people are helped by meds. And some people are OVER medicated. The real problem is that people want to fix things with pills alone. It's cheaper (see insurance industry) and supposedly "easier" to just pop a pill.

My Mother loved it. A goofy Psychotic. She told my father she'd leave him if he ever beat her. To my knowledge he never actually mentioned beating her at all. A simple scare tactic for control, ala' if you don't do what i say, i'll kill myself, etc.

I was first diagnosed with ADHD when I was about 7. Later, after some prescribed drugs, I was diagnosed with bipolar and anti-social disorder.
In reality, looking back at it, I was bored with the rate that classes plodded along in school.
Ritalin, Lithobid, Paxil, etc. were all prescribed to me in my youth. One medication (I don't recall the name of it) would knock me out for 8+ hours, leaving me feel groggy all day.

I decided to go on adderall at age 18. I had been diagnosed with ADHD very young. In the next year and a half i went to school, learned what i needed to learn (no thanks to class) quit adderall, and got myself a specialized, relatively well paying job for 20. They say some take psychedelics and go nuts because they cant fit there experience into every day existence. Adderall is no different. I notice extremely high but realistic expectations for myself, resulting in "bi-polar" behavior.

You bring up the real problem here - so many children are poorly medicated. You should have been watched extremely closely so that suicidal thoughts would be stopped immediately, and it would be clear that you were on the wrong meds. Gaining weight is also not acceptable as a side effect. Your dr should have switched meds then also. It takes some time to find the right meds, but it goes quickly with a good dr. Some kids need this, bottom line.

You should google "Yoism schizophrenia" and read Robert whitakers book "Mad in America", among other things I'm sure. Brain scans of people with and without "schizophrenia" are irrelevant for many reasons, as is heritability (All human traits are heritable). Just some social worker sitting there making things up, repeating verbatim what she's been told to say without any real understanding of medicine... then they get their applause and you just wonder what the hell is wrong with everyone. It's almost as if everyone but the kid is the one with the mental problem.

I have ADHD and Adderall XR actually helped me a lot, but I stopped using it because I can't be dependent on a medication for the rest of my life, ya know? I tried regular Adderall, too, but that made my heart race and made me feel really weird. My family is very against psychiatric medication of any kind and don't believe ADHD is real, so it took me a while to get it recognized, but when I did it made a lot of sense looking back at my behavior even when I was like 5.

Don't me wrong, I think over medicating children is wrong, especially when psychiatrists are always pushing the latest drug. In my opinion it should be the opposite. Push the drugs that have been used the longest and we know some of the long-term side-effects. But, I have seen Adderall work miracles for me. For the 1st time in my life I felt like things slowed down in my head and I could actually relax. If someone has ADHD a lot worse than I do then it might just help them.

That pbs vid breaks my heart. Labeling and drugging any person against their will should be illegal based on human rights. Have they broken a law?
And labeling and drugging children for "undesired behavior" has got to warrant the most severe hell in the afterlife.
I can't look away from injustice and just go escape. I will fight this evil with my money and my energy until I'm not on this planet anymore.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but with the past few years it seems to have become trendy to answer these questionaires along the lines of "how psychotic are you?" or "what personality disorder do you have?"
It is just really weird how that is deemed cool and put on myspace profiles or whatever... This video made me think of that.

Ritalin is synthetic Cocaine, it has some of the chemical properties of methamphetamine, which would be bad enough, but the effects are equal to cocaine in every way.

Yes, but you have to remember that stimulants work the opposite way in people with ADHD. If a regular person takes it, it will be like that, but in someone with genuine ADHD it can calm the mind down because it's already naturally acting as if it was on a stimulant... if that makes sense.

Zoloft kills people, go to the AMA's website and look up the unbiased trials. Have your parents look too. It's not safe for adults, much less children. Suicide and homicide rates while on zoloft are anywhere from double to triple...

it really is a shame the drug cocktails that "doctors" are giving to the children.
drug treatment is not the answer, it only causes more problems. take adderall, the amphetamine cocktail in that has lead to mass abuse in the states. isn't it in a doctors code to "do no harm"?

My best friend in H.S. started taking ritalin at age 6, he quickly moved on to adderall, this was all for "ADD". All that was really wrong was his mother didn't have time for a hyper kid. At age 25, STILL on Adderall, he had a severe psychotic break, began talking to ppl that didn't exist, saw "demons" wherever he looked, and attempted suicide 5 times in one week. All because his parents didn't feel like dealing with a hyper child. These drugs WILL destroy your life, it's just a matter of when.

ive been bipolar for 43 years..also have adhd..bpd..ptsd..chronic depression ..fibromyalgia and many more....i went from 6 drugs a day to nothing in weeks with the use of 8 herb essiac tea...flor.essence....a canadian indian cancer remedy that does wonders for mental health also..i recommenced it for everyone...

I was on heavy medication for sedation, for bi-polar, schizophrenia, add, depression... other things too. 3 years ago when I went off of them, I realized that I had part of my life and creativity stolen from me. I wasn't sick, I was (and still am) just a little different. People need to learn to embrace difference or suffer the effects of being all the same.
I never fully recovered from the medication.

I agree with you completely, and what I think is that schooling, education, and actual interaction, actions, are much more effective than theories(not to disregard theory). Being proactive I believe is what its going to take.

The American Diet...especially with its sugar and chemical laden nutrient devoid foods...in addition to fluoridation, mutiple vaccine exposure with thimerisol, and mercury laden dental amalgams...are the reason why our society is so sick. The big drug companies along with the cancer treatment industry are reaping in hoards of cash over our painful demise!! In other words they don't give a fuck about you or your health. They love to see you sick! In fact they thrive on it!

i was on adhd and now psych meds allmost my whole life and at 21 i am pretty messed up to the point were i am going to seek god and he helps not meds and football helps just to prove them wrong

If you're like 95% of the population, you meds are causing your problem in the first place. The drug industry has created an army of patients/customers. Its TRUE that you'd probably go manic without them, but its because you began taking them in the first place. Find a nice quiet padded room, quit your meds and many months later, you'll be mentally stable.
Most of my friends who were put on meds by their doctors were on street drugs to start with. They lied to their doc to get more meds..

im 39 now and was force fed ritalin my entire elemetary life.i was nothing more than a robot. My education, social, mental and general learning suffered because my teachers wanted to have a good day by me being locked up in my own mind. TODAY I STILL FEEL A PRISONER BECAUSE I WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT I MAY HAVE BECOME OR DONE IN LIFE HAD I HAD THE UNDERSTANDING OF OTHERS.
