since then nadal hasnt been as fast as he did.... he isnt able to return shots like before .... Obviously I was always aware that Nadal would beat Federer always until he could run well.. and as long as he could he would be better... now i think thats questionable!

Well you are wrong if you think Federer did not play his best tennis against nadal in the Australian Open 2009. He had winners in the first three sets .... all over the place.... but if you recollect.. Nadal was able to run down so many important points which looked lost by him .. and then end up winning them... That broke Federers game in the end.. and with that his confidence. You just dont see Federer crying over stupid losses, but that one hurt him bad coz he knew he played really well!

youd only find highlights online... because australian open is usually copyrighted for two years or more .. so if the final was in 2009, the match is copyrighted not to go on youtube for two years or something to that effect.

thats the reason you dont see australian open matches on youtube.. look for this years matches.. you wouldnt find much either..

Besides Federer played some extremely high risk tennis against Nadal trying to pepper the lines as much as possible to make sure Nadal could not get a return.. His winners were unusually high on that night.... but so were his unforced errors coz he was going for more than he usually had to..

ANd the difference was primarily on main points where Nadal ended up taking the first and third sets in tie breaks .

nadal is a greta player and competitor but in my opinion he has pushed his body to get to federers level and it is now taking its toll on him. i fear he will forever be plagued with niggly injuries here and there from now on

Well, Murray played well in the third set. But before that he was just trying to use cheap tactics, like targeting Federer's backhand hoping for an unforced error. If he'd just played more like he did against Nadal, he might have won a set

@troll - well lets face it, murray has been achieving tremendous success against Federer in the past due to his continuous pounding at Federers backhand which would end up giving in. a trick Nadal's topspin would always successfully break down. Against Nadal it was different because Nadal stands so far behind to receive serve, any angled serve would put Nadal on the defensiveand Murray would volley the next vital shot away. Murray was really lucky he won the first two sets against Nadal.

Yes, I agree with you partially, because even when he didn't get his 1st serve in he was always playing offensively attacking Nadal's second serve. But against Federer he often hit weak, looping returns off the second serve, and that really hurt him in the end. He really just didn't play with the same intensity as he did against Nadal.

But Troll you must understand Federers second serve is almost as effective as Nadal's first serve. Federes second serve has so much kick.Nadal's second serve is a whimper in comparison . Its easier to attack Nadal on serve IFF you learn his serve patterns which are predictable over time. If you dont then Nadals serve is very difficult to keep in the court.

Federers serve goes up high on murrays backhand . thereby he has to make his own pace .

Murray is unable to generate his own pace. Look at his forehand.. Loop a few forehands to his forehand and he just places it well .. he just cant generate pace.

The reason his backhand goes really hard is because he has learnt how to time the ball off the opponents pace on the backhand pretty well.

Nadal Murray match wasnt as easy as it lukd. Nadal kept to Murrays backhand. And murray has mastered the art of timing his backhand on nadals topspin from the backhand side. !

I half agree with you there, but I have seen Murray on a few occasions generate his own pace.

To counter Federer's kick second serve, he should stand inside the baseline. It may hurt him in the beginning of the match, but as he grows more accustomed to the serve he'll be able to hit better returns.

He also needs to work on his placement, because his shots generally lack pace, he needs to aim closer to the lines imo.

It's all much easier said than done. heh

Well it sortov depends. Murray does lack pace for which he needs to aim for hte lines.. but it depends on your stroke style.. sometimes the style of your strokes are such that in odd situations you are unable to hit the lines because even if you aim for them, you tend to hit the ball much within the lines.. Few people who successfully did it were monica seles, serena williams now and sampras. Oh and hingis in the earlier years hit the lines and successfully almost each time.

Murray was building on his stamina and strength, they dont get much chance to do it on down time as they dont get much of it. Murray used his sheer talent to take Roger out. Now its 2010 and Murray is now fully fit has built his stamina and strength....its all good for tennis. Murray still has his aggression its just contained and directed more.

Federer is actually one of the fittest guys on the men's tour, if not the fittest. A good example was his match against Del Potro in the Roland Garros semi-final this year. He won because he was able to outlast Del Potro physically over 5 sets. Also Del Potro had spent considerably less time on court compared to Federer prior to that match.

Are you kidding? Murray wasn't fit at all until about a year ago. Even now, he isn't as fit as Federer or Nadal. Djokovic is the guy who wimps out when the weather's too hot no matter how big the match is. Nadal has more problems with injuries than any other top player and Del Potro can't even play at a high level for 3 sets, forget 5. Federer is just as fit if not fitter than all those guys. You never see him out of breath or losing his legs at the end of a match. He isn't injured much either.

I believe the key to murray's success this year will not be in his groundstrokes- which are always superb-, but his serving, an aspect of his game which does occasionally cause him some trouble but doesn't always prove too costly because his return of serve is so good. Basically, i feel that when he serves well, he cannot lose.
