  • I have never seen Maynard look happier than at 2:26. It is beautiful to see this great and deserving musician have such a rewarding moment in his life.

  • I am a Maynard lover all the way and I am a trumpet player as well who listens to him for inspiration BUT although Maynard is a gifted player, a time came when his low notes were shit. He even said it himself MANY times as he went to be a guess at music colleges (and others). He told the trumpets never to mimic his tone because it was crap.

Doesn't change the fact that I respect him tenfold.

  • @tuffer020 Absolutely, you don't know what you said

  • maynard ferguson is amazing! he was well known for high notes, but he never did forget the lower ones too...

  • I was there. I had tears in my eyes. Maynard could play anything, any style, any where. He wasn't just a screamer... listen to his work with Chris Conner... A true legend.

  • Maynard Ferguson fans are almost as strange as Michale Jackson fans...

  • That suit....just incredible.

  • whats he playing??????????

  • @carlosjtown

    1976 Olympics

  • Playing in the town where he was born...at the Olympic stdium in Montreal, Qc.

  • Dear formicslayer... as a trupmet player i'll let you know something...You are not responsible of you you look like.... but you are responsible of WHO you are... and let me tell you that beauty is from inside... and to me Maynard is really beautifull, he has shown the beauty that he has inside .... that was Maynards, you can hear what drives him...

  • It looks lip synched

  • This is very beautiful. I like the sound of the space almost responding to MF by way of the echo and acoustics of the space.

  • Where was this olympics at?

  • teepees?

  • @tpstrat14 too damn funny!!! and true.

  • Very tasteful as Canadian Maynard signs off the '76 Olympics as if playing Retreat at a military parade. No need for showboating here, just simple, yet very powerful.

Thanks for posting, I was 16 when I saw this live, and I didn't understand it then. Now, it almost makes me tear up.

  • Maynard warming up before a gig........wait what?

  • at 1:15 i totally thought the trumpet caught on fire

  • Maynard could do anything.

    Maynard did everything.

    He was our guiding light.

  • Moving piece indeed, but I have always wondered why Maynard was not playing this live....was it his decision, or the Olympic Committee??....I have heard others defend this decision due to acoustics, the delay, etc...but I don't buy that excuse at all...I have see many others play live in front of a huge stadium crowd....

any suggestions as to why Maynard synched this with a recording?

  • @dallas1963 Olympic organizing committees are control freaks and they try to limit the chance for mistakes, so they make most performers at the ceremonies synch or mime the music. It has happened at virtually every Olympics, with only a few major exceptions.

  • Interesting how he chose to play something simple, calm yet still powerful. He could have wowed the crowd by screaming through his horn but he had nothing to prove, instead he said something deeper, something moving, something spirtual.

  • Great memory of 1976 Games...

  • maynards awesome but what was so great about that

  • Haunting... Just amazing.

  • @J52390 My thoughts, as well. Such a moving piece of music.

  • best trumpeter ever. love how this is one of the songs that shows he's more than just a screamer, but had talent everywhere

  • Very nice is all I got to say.

  • Not even a hint of nerves. Not an easy setting to play something like that. Such poise and confidence.

  • taps??? a weird version of taps???

  • back to a time where real musicians appeared everywhere :')

  • It kinda seems fake to me.. dunno why

  • most likely because the audio is out of sync with the video...

  • is there such thing as more than perfect?

  • Yes, it's known as maynardfergunism, or more colloquially known as "fucking awesome".

  • Wow, that gave me shivers. And I watched this when it happened. Time Warp.....

  • 凄い暖かみがあって柔らかく、そして、優しい音ですね。感動しました。

  • reverberated trumpet like this is the best thing on earth. i know its not artificial reverb or anything. it just sounds so powerful

  • this is a sign of pure talent

  • I love how this guy is just not miked at all.

  • that sound........listen

  • the reason why i like to listen to Maynard Ferguson is because of the sound how high he can play it and the tone quality of his music and he is the greatest trumpet player in the whole world he will all ways be

  • so true

    his tone is amazing

  • I wonder if I can ask this without getting flamed... What do his fans love about his playing? What do you hear in his playing that makes you melt and go "Wow"...is it purely how loud/high etc he can play or is there something else?

  • the way he plays is so peaceful and its not just because he's a screamer, he has a great low register to, and he was a legend and still is, he has the best tone out there and how loud he can go and keep it in context with some character and also unlike a lot of trumpet players such as myself he wasnt cocky. (:

  • Listen to him play Maria and Somewhere from West Side. His low end tone is amazing and high is even more impressive. Maynard is amazing because how well he can play High. Many people can squeal and feel all special but He makes it Music. He is playing low in this video! Unless you expected trombone or horn range.

  • You can't play high if you can't play low.

  • you're absolutely correct. When I was in 9th grade I had trouble playing notes above the register in tune... My band director told me to start practicing notes BELOW the register more. It really helped out.

  • @AlanCSSNub funny thing with me hahahahhahaha

i can play pretty low but i can only hit a high F

  • @AlanCSSNub not true

  • @AlanCSSNub ....actually, its the other way around....If you dont have the support to play the lowest register fully and at all volumes, you will never be able to play the upper register with any strength, control, or sense of being in tune!

  • @bjornnilsen Isn't that what he said....

  • His ability to play high, and still be musical, is what makes him a legend.

  • The passion.the breadth, the tonality, that range.....all the different styles...He, was an educator to us all........He was a master at his craft...and yet showed us he had fun in doing what he he loved and did best.....

  • interesting maynard fact of the day: he learned how to play the way he does by playing etudes up and octave at half tempo. he'd carefully take the time to understand each note and how to play it correctly. that's where his beautiful intonation and lethal accuracy comes from!

  • You've got it! Maynard is lethally accurate, whether high, superhigh, regardless of tempo. Thank you

  • I'm in awe every time I listen to him.

  • 2:27

    he is such a beast

    R.I.P

  • he died? I didnt know that sucks, he was awesome, :D

  • lol

  • you should hear the taps that they played for his funeral....OMG it was awesome!!!!

  • Yes, the taps at his tribute concert was amazing.

  • You didn't know that sucks? It does. Sorry I couldn't resist.

  • I love Maynard. But either there is something really wrong with this video or he was faking it. Either way, it's not like he couldn't have played that theme... and then jacked it up two octaves. hehe

  • its just the vid, he wouldnt fake it at the olympics, he would prolly kill himself in shame if he did. if this were from this years olympics i would believe it to be fake, lol

  • keep in mind that he's playing in a huge stadium, the echo is probably what makes it seem unrealistic.

  • In 76 I believe it was actually a Holton mf horn

  • Great piece.

That olympics nearly bankrupted the host city of Montreal.

  • yeah!! Maynard Ferguson ROCKS!!!!

  • 5 star

  • That was beautiful!

  • maynard, thanks for making me enjoy the trumoet back in the day

  • great video! obviously rare...but hey...is that the echo of the stadium...or are there other's playing with Maynard?

  • xmmm interesting point but i think it's the echo of the stadium.

  • I don't know if they had the technology yet for digital delay, but...you never know.

  • It wasn't digital; it was done with tape loops; Don Ellis had been doing it for six or seven years by 1976. Les Paul invented the technology in the 1950's, so, yeah, delays were quite possible in 1976. I think, however, that this might have been poor acoustics, but I don't know for certain.

  • I have been a MF fan for 30 years, and I have never heard this. I have to say that it is just beautiful. I cannot stop listening to it.When I think of Maynard in the future, this will be something I will not forget.

  • you dont need to play high notes to be an amazing performer

  • My dad watched this with his Son Benetly Fergunson in Aspin in '76.

  • maynard... my inspiration in music - r.i.p. for you will always be remembered

  • What a great comment. I will always remember Maynard as well. One of my greatest inspirations.

  • he was the biggest influence in my life. And he will be forever missed

  • Hundreds of millions of people watching. Talk about pressure. I'd pass out on the stage.

  • Thanks so much for posting this!

  • It had to be Montréal...it would make perfect sense since he was a native of Montréal....

  • RIP

  • Maynard.....Was a beautiful man inside and out. A class-act. The clarity and simplicity of the those notes.....says it all.

  • He had his problems. An interesting life story. To my understanding though all of his problems were prior to the 70's as they ended with his journey to India.

  • elite.....stick to war videogames and playing with your beerbong. Dumbass

  • dam maynard isnt the prettiest person in the world but he sacrificed that for trumpet.

    trumpets! ASSEMBLE!!!

  • @formicslayer HOOH!

  • @formicslayer In the United States maynard makes trumpet pretty, but in Soviet Russia trumpet makes maynard pretty!

  • A truly beautiful performance by Maynard Ferguson, the simple but awesome notes gave a good extinguishing to the flame.

Too bad the closing ceremony is not complete out there :P

  • WOW! The tone, the clarity...it was absolutely perfect. The notes sounded like bells.

    R.I.P.

  • Maynard is NOT a screech player. He plays REAL notes. Other wannabes screech. This is the final fucking word.

  • where did he screech?

  • Tasty heart felt maynard is canadian!

  • The '76 Olympics were in Montreal

  • When will you "Maynard purists" realize that this was BEAUTIFUL and so perfectly executed.

And Im guessing they were in France, not sure what the Teepees are for.

  • 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. The teepees where probaly an intro to Lake Placid, U.S.A.

  • The Olympics were in Montréal, the reason why there were wigwams (or teepees) was because of our Native heritage.

  • I remember the natives marching into the stadium with a war chant playing, similar to the Florida St. war hymn. Anyone remember that? It was great! I'm trying to find that clip or the whole closing ceremony. Anyone know where I can find it?

  • this is true he didn't play at Lower Tones too much but I agree beautiful Sound I wonder if that was his Horton trumpet?

  • "Holton" Hears a Who?

  • thanks Strad36 I've never played a HOLTON! But I do have a Besson 220 Silver which is fine for me I just never knew what horn he played!

  • back in those days he played a conn i belive

  • Nope, A Holton from the 60's plus.

  • What country was that in. I see there's some teepees so is it America?

  • Awesome!! MF Forever!

  • he still should have 8va'd that shit right at the end when everybody thought he was finished. You gotta pimp that thing, Maynard.

  • true dat

  • Nicely done under obvious pressure, but certainly not too demanding. Maybe it was something given to him to play.

  • Great playing is not just about dexterity and screeching. The sonority and control under the immense pressure is amazing! Many thanks MF

  • Too much delay and not enough screeching. Any first chair high school player could handle that piece. Bo-ring.

  • Who cares. You don't dis Maynard.

  • Let's hear your playing of it.

I want you to play it exactly the same, with the same resonance and tonal quality. If you completely suck at trumpet, your school's first chair may be used.

  • HA! Indeed!

Interesting that Maynard changes his left hand grip to a more "tradtional" grip for slide control. He was truly an amazing man, and a trememdous player. So well versed - From tradional playing, to improvisation, to the high notes. He is missed. RIP MF!

  • do you think it's appropriate to screatch at the olimpics???

  • It is always appropriate to screech.

    Always.

  • lets see you play that good under pressure of a crowd of lets say, the world

  • during this long phrase he must be thinking of the good old days. LICKING OUT URSULA ANDRES

  • sounded like conquistidor for a moment there in the beginning.

  • yeah thats what i was thinking.

    lol

  • What an Honor

  • Wow, this clip is the FIRST time I've heerd MF play tenderly, beautifully, and with good control. No shakin' like a monkey spanker, no profuse high register. This sounded pretty. Thanks Maynard.

I do like the pilgrim Chuck Mangione's music much better than MF though.

  • Sounds like a simple fanfare

  • What's the piece?

  • WOW! Amazingly beautiful. Thanks for posting this.

  • How delightful! Maynard could dazzle with more fireworks than anybody AND he could play with exquisitely brilliant understatement. I remember seeing a reprise of the closing ceremonies where the announcer remarked, "Maynard Ferguson blew out the Olympic Flame." Thank you for posting this!

  • This video is beautiful

  • Anyone have the Chuck Mangione Lake Placid Olympic ceremony footage with that great band behind him?

  • Wow you are very lucky to have this video. No one will ever be able to play like him. RIP
