Whatever happened to my rock n roll? (to quote BRMC)
There HAS to be a group of musically inclined kids out there that are heavily influenced by 70's rock and have a great opportunity to revitalize the genre.
There are very few, real talented musicians out there right now, Brant Bjork, for example, but most of the stuff is commercial, disposable ear junk.
Growing up in the 70's: PRICELESS. Thanks mom and dad for gettin' it on in early 62' for I got the best part of the deal. \m/
The 70's: real hard rock, talent b4 profit, $7-8 festival seating concerts, no TicketBastard fees, $5 tour t-shirts, no security screening, vinyl LP's, home stereos w/ huge speakers, no MTV, no hairy 80's "dudes look like ladies", AOR radio and much more. Thanks mom n dad for gettin' it on in early 62', for I grew up with all this and my older cousins for passing on their great music influence to me at an early age. \m/

I saw these guys twice in 1970 and 1971 I think. Man, they were loud. Hard to believe three people could make that much music. Great shows! It was in Houston, TX at the Sam Houston CXoliseum.
GFR was the first concert I ever went to and I have loved them forever! Saw them in Dallas and loved them so much, I went to see them in Ft. Worth the next night!!!! Saw them agin when they did their reunion tour and I would see them agai if the opportunity arises!!! GFR forever!
There outlook on drug addiction seems so innocent compared to what we know about it now. Nevertheless, it is nice to see them take a stand against drugs at least ten years before it became popular to "just say no".
Mark Farner became a Christian and has some really good Christian albums. Also Kerry Livgren formerly the great lead guitarist and song writer for Kansas has become a Christian and also has some great Christian albums out as well.
If Grand Funk is not in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame then none of the others that are...should be. GFR was GREAT. If your music is still played daily on the radio 40 years later then they HAVE TO BE IN THE HALL OF FAME. PERIOD!
on another note, I am a recovering addict, and I was delighted to see the conversation in the latter portion of this vid. For anyone else suffering out there, remember to take it one day at a time. You are not alone; reach out for that helping hand.
I remember my dad told me he was in line to enlist in the airforce, and this song came out on the loudspeaker, and doods just broke down in tears. hectic times man.
Saw the trio on this tour in 1972. In Syracuse, Freddie King opened. Mark blew us away with "Mr. Limosine Driver." It was before keyboards, and he was using that scotch-taped up guitar from the early album covers. What a freakin' show. LIfe changing...still gives me chills amost 40 years later.
I got to see Mark Farner with Ringo Starr and some other performers back around 97-98 at Sunken Gardens in SATX and he got to perform some of GF's songs, he was AWESOME!!!
All Grand Funk fans please sign the petition to induct Grand Funk into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. If you don't know where to go leave me an e-mail.
Grand Funk Railroad has always been one of the greatest rock band to come out of the US. Mark Farner has in my opinion the best voice in rock. Too damn bad music these days has turned to corporate crap. All we can do is try to turn the younger generation on to bands like GFR and hope they get it.
This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.
check out the history of GFR. Zep refussed to follow them at a concert and they out sold the Beatles they called in engineers because they were afrair the stadium would fall in.
always had to have GFR at parties cranked up in teh 70's early 80's..it was a must have..got a hold of their live in bosnia concert back a few years ago they did...seemed as if they never left the dang studio.. was that good.
Having seen them live 5 times including ATLANTA POP FESTIVAL not many 3 man bands come close. CREAM in their prime, ZZTOP at times, and RUSH anytime. GFR comes across as the ultimate R&R band live. Very few bands come to life on stage as MARK, DON, and Mel. Zep wouldn't make a good pimple on their collective asses. I've seen the ZEP 10 times and they never got any better. Grand Funk got better every time I saw them. The last time they opened for ZZ TOP and it wasn't even close. The FUNK rules.
You must have been checking out Plants codpiece and dreaming instead of listening to the music. As far as ability if Heart, who are a great little band, can cover Zep tunes with just 2 girls with guitars how hard can it be? I've never seen any Big Name band try to cover any Funk tunes. When it comes to blues based Rock & Roll few besides Jimi and Grand Funk really delivered.
Sure heart covers them, every band tries to cover them. Just because a band covers another band doesnt mean its great. The reason bands cover Zep is because they are the Gods of Rock. I love GFR but to to say how hard can it be to cover Zep? Theres a reason Plant, JPJ, Bonham, and Page are arguably the best at their respective skills.
Evidently you've neer seen Heart live. Their covers of Zeppelin border on brilliant. Just as emotional and musical as the originals ever were. Ann and Nancy never tried to cover a song, when they performed, they owned the song. Arguably, I concede Zep at their finest , were a great show band of considerable talent. That being said, I would never say any one band is the best of all. Comparing Zep to GFR is like comparing Clapton to YES in their original format. Both are good but totally different
WELL SAID...SO MANY GREAT BANDS FROM THIS ERA! LOVE CLAPTON AND "YES" TOO! HAVE BEEN GOING TO YES CONCERTS SINCE MY EARLY 20's...will be 56 on the 29th. ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITE OF ALL MY LIFE-TIME! THEY ARE BRILLIANT.
Being born in 68 I grew up on Zeppelin and never really heard the early GFR. I never seen so much energy from 3 guys in my life. Im blown away and listen to there second live album over and over. Inside looking out is phenominal. Zeppelin cant touch these guys when it comes to a live show. Not trying to start a debate about zep and gfr but these guys should have way more recognition. They fucking rule!
Who gives a flying f**k about the huffington post ,you're here to comment about GFR. One of the best bands of all time .they sounded good on record ,but they sounded awesome live!.
It doesnt matter anymore, to me anyway, if GFR is not in the R&R Hall of Fame. It has far lesser groups and people in it and we know what has happened in the past with voting.
They're in mine and yours and that is what matters. We know what they did and how cool it was to have them as a part of our time. My '68 Camaro rolling around town booming out their music - Now that's R&R music for the ages!
The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is a farce. It is run by people who only induct the groups they like. Read about it and the slime balls who run it. Until GFR is inducted it is not a legitimate entity. This group was HUGE to this country and to R&R music.
" It is run by people who only induct the groups they like....", Is it...!!?
Correction though..., perhaps it should be better said that - It is run by people who only induct the groups (artistes/performers) that 'kowtow', bow-down or succumb to them..!! Period..
As an artist and creator that saw all levels of the playing field, Mark Farner's musical diversity is a matter of public record. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" as one of the top ten classic songs of all time. Way to go Mark!!! Further proof this great American Band can not be ignored any longer!!!

PERIOD!

I mean come on, Madonna but not Grand Funk.

For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.

always had to have GFR at parties cranked up in teh 70's early 80's..it was a must have..got a hold of their live in bosnia concert back a few years ago they did...seemed as if they never left the dang studio.. was that good.
custardpie40 2 years ago
Having seen them live 5 times including ATLANTA POP FESTIVAL not many 3 man bands come close. CREAM in their prime, ZZTOP at times, and RUSH anytime. GFR comes across as the ultimate R&R band live. Very few bands come to life on stage as MARK, DON, and Mel. Zep wouldn't make a good pimple on their collective asses. I've seen the ZEP 10 times and they never got any better. Grand Funk got better every time I saw them. The last time they opened for ZZ TOP and it wasn't even close. The FUNK rules.
TheGunslinger5854 2 years ago
you must have been too busy checking out the dudes around you...I love GFR but not even close to Zep
raiderspride69 2 years ago 3
You must have been checking out Plants codpiece and dreaming instead of listening to the music. As far as ability if Heart, who are a great little band, can cover Zep tunes with just 2 girls with guitars how hard can it be? I've never seen any Big Name band try to cover any Funk tunes. When it comes to blues based Rock & Roll few besides Jimi and Grand Funk really delivered.
TheGunslinger5854 2 years ago
Sure heart covers them, every band tries to cover them. Just because a band covers another band doesnt mean its great. The reason bands cover Zep is because they are the Gods of Rock. I love GFR but to to say how hard can it be to cover Zep? Theres a reason Plant, JPJ, Bonham, and Page are arguably the best at their respective skills.
raiderspride69 2 years ago
and when I say it doesnt mean its great, I mean the cover.
raiderspride69 2 years ago
Evidently you've neer seen Heart live. Their covers of Zeppelin border on brilliant. Just as emotional and musical as the originals ever were. Ann and Nancy never tried to cover a song, when they performed, they owned the song. Arguably, I concede Zep at their finest , were a great show band of considerable talent. That being said, I would never say any one band is the best of all. Comparing Zep to GFR is like comparing Clapton to YES in their original format. Both are good but totally different
TheGunslinger5854 2 years ago

MorroccoM13 2 years ago 6
Yeah...., How so true...!! But you said that ...,
" It is run by people who only induct the groups they like....", Is it...!!?
Correction though..., perhaps it should be better said that - It is run by people who only induct the groups (artistes/performers) that 'kowtow', bow-down or succumb to them..!! Period..
Cheerio.
