So they assumed that, since prison is a cold cruel place let us all help prove the point. This indicates that the subjects were either confounded, or this is their way of rationalizing their act.
It still baffles me as to how when all the prisoners were suffering the same plight, how no one came forward to help or support 416. How did a member out group had so much power over the solidarity of the ingroup.
@manjmazi by in-group you mean the prisoners? in the documentary it became clear that the prisoners weren't exactly a unity or a group. maybe that explains why they didn't support 416
Good luck getting a job kid, oh and I'm sure your going to love all the debt from trying to get a masters so you can actually practice that bullshit....
@MisterHeizenberg regardless of what field i master in, i will surely be in debt. while you think of it as bullshit, my opinion differs. to each his own! i dont understand why people such as yourself are so hostile towards others on you tube, my comment, was simply that, a comment.
I think these days these experiments are less likely to work because we have come to realise that doctors or lawyers or police are just people and they dont know everything and they are not Gods. I believe most people now would just say get fucked and walk out or even try to find the person being experimented on and help them. We think for ourselves now and we question authority...thank God!!
@vmmc64 This was in the early 70's. Some of the participants in this experiment were anti-establishment hippies. I'm pretty sure they were okay with questioning authority in most situations.
Anyway, these days, this type of experiment would never get past an ethics board. So I guess we'll never know if mindsets have changed in that particular way.
The experiment was out of control and too trrible. It was completely against the humanity. Its not ethical to manipulate somebody to participate in such horrible experiment. It is sure that people will act and behave madly, if you put them in such evil place for a experiment. Moreover, volunteers can't respond and answered correctly when they remain in terrorize condition. Santosh Khadka (F20082206)
@shimokita2 Zimbardo, the psychologist who ran this experiment, actually testified as an expert witness in the trials involving Abu Ghraib. He wrote a book about this experiment (The Lucifer Effect) where he actually compares these two things in the first chapter. Just thought you might be interested since you mentioned it reminding you of that. :)
@MrVarct The video may be slow paced, but it illustrates why such horrible things were done by the Nazis for instance. Loyalty to one's country can be honorable, but also blindly obeying authority may be dangerous if your commanders sense of right and wrong gets distorted. This video shows how easy it is for everybody, good and bad, to become 'evil' through authority structures. In summary, never do anything that is against your conscience.
I'm sorry but that John Wayne guy sounds like a douchebag- he had no reason to go so far degrading the prisoners but his own enjoyment of it. It was a freaking social experiment, there was no need for him to take it that seriously.
@Baylorchick20 no, just the way people are, you too. Even though you are reluctant to admit it. Not trying to rattle your cage. People are sheep. And every sheep thinks he's not part of the flock.
@Epostaxis I understand everyone has their own way of wanting control, I suppose this experiment proved that humans are nothing but animals. Its a sad thing man
@Baylorchick20 but we are nothing but animals, animals with a very large frontal lobe. humans developed as a species in groups and therefore we still exhibit the same type of behavior that got us this far as a species. nothing sad about it.
@Epostaxis I don't think this attitude has anything to do with development as a group, except in the attitude of the prisoners. As Zimbardo has said, it demonstrates the danger of authority.
@0000000000156 No animals 'torture' eachother for fun? Lions, tigers, mice, rates, raccoons, squirrels, panthers, cats, dogs, aligators, crocidiles, swans, penguins, and sharks all fight eachother for territory, mating, dominace, athority, and when they get restless.
@cpink102292 Have you ever heard of aligators that lock up antilopes so that they can torture them with all pleasure? Well, I suppose I missed a serious part of evolution if that is the case.
you know - due to this experiment, there are many ethics laws that have been put in place. I do not feel that this experiment would have been different if there were women involved. Women can be just as catty and cruel as men - sometimes more so thanks to the feminist movement. They feel that they have to prove something, that they have to show that they are worth something, thanks to the way society has guided their belief structure.
unfortunately even crueler psychology experiments are still being done on animals - even though the justification for these experiments is that the animals are very similar to humans..
@paperfl0wers Phil Zimbardo, who conducted the experiment later made an analysis of evil. By completing another experiment, he came to the conclusion that women were just as susceptible to personality change, in a situation like the SPE.
The problem is that the participants are in a safe environment. If all of them suddenly just woke up in a prison they would not have acted this way, they would have to find a way to survive and get out. But they are monitored and they are aware of that and their perverted self (that we all possess in one way or the other) are on autopilot. "Let´s just roll with this". After that they get fucked up in the head. That´s the problem with this experiment. Google the Hawthorne effect and you´ll see.
So is anyone concerned about how actual guards treat actual prisoners? I know they are prisoners and have done wrong, but their punishment is being confined, not being forced to do humiliating things.
@imhallowarren Look up "Boards of Canada". That is the band whose music is being used in this documentary. They are a fantastic band. I love them... You may also like the band called Hammock which is of the same style. The music isn't as old as this video tho.
Although the experiment did show that peoples behaviour can be changed by power , it is extremely unethical. no matter what results have been found participants of an experiment shouldnt be told that they cant leave especially when they are showing signs of being as distressed as some participants were. there are other ways that Zimbardo could have tested his theory without it being so unethical.
@IronWench Yes it was extremely unethical but the point is that Zimbardo was unintentionally conforming to his role as prisoner superintendent just as the guards and prisoners conformed to their roles and therefore he didn't stop the experiment even when it was getting really horrible and abusive in so many ways. He realised his mistakes after he was released from his role and when another psychologist came to visit and witnessed the horror of the prison. This just shows the power of conformity.
5:27 "after passing tests to screen out anyone with a psychological abnormality" ...this is false information, the opposite of what is said is the real truth...they deliberately looked for people who were prone to react in the way which they ultimately did...the same is being done currently with higher ranking military positions, police, homeland security, etc...
@TYthemShoes but more importantly it proves that we as humans, innocent or corrupt, can be manipulated into preforming evil acts...now that makes me truly sick
this experiment is still going on everyday in the Canadian Workers Compensation system, Injured and disabled by occupational work injuries are being forced into physiotherapy programs with diagnosed and untreated work injuries, ex; forced to attend these programs or lose replacement benefits, etc;
When an worker is injured on the job in Canada, they are discriminated from the Universal Canadian Health care they pay into, and are placed into the workers comp system which denies medical care; WTF
@FIXWCBCANADA "this experiment is still going on everyday in the Canadian Workers Compensation system" ...this can be simply cut down to just "this experiment is still going on everyday" because the list of organizations using these methods are too long to list... military, police, schools, etcetera etcetera etcetera
@RjeanBagierra ,,you hit the head on the nail, in my wcb injury claim file, i was reviewing for appeal, i have found evidence of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. my written complaint to the RCMP not investigated? my complaint to city police, not investigated; If I went out and injured somebody with intent, i would be charged and held accountable, why are these people allowed to break the law and not be held accountable? This is along way from being over, I WANT JUSTICE!
holy shit, this was fascinating. the "john wayne" guard comes off as a smug psycho. in his interview he's trying to play it off like he was acting out some role but it's obvious he enjoyed being abusive and sadistic. what a piece of shit human being.
@BigDog91527 Me too! I've always wanted to be part of it just because no matter what you say, you can't truly know what you would do in a situation unless you've done it yourself.
@whatuhhidk2 Well whatever i would've done i wouldn't cry about it afterwards. The test is there to show how easily people break down/abuse authority. Then when it happens (as expected) they go on to complaing about how bad they felt, despite the fact that it was the fucking point in the first place...
@BigDog91527 I think the knowledge gained is well worth it. Someday I want to find a group to do this. Some countries would still let you. I'm female, so I'm wondering what adding women to the equation would do. Would it change the results at all, or would it play out exactly the same way? Besides, in science you always run an experiment twice and compare results. It's just good experimentation to do it again
@whatuhhidk2 That's what I also think.About adding women, i really don't know.I think they would've broken down sooner than the men.The abuse could also be more psychologically damaging depending on what exactly they are forced to do. If they are forced to run around naked and stuff like that then i think it would've affected them alot worse.
Yes that's right, it should've been done with both bigger groups and also many smaller to conclude the different outcomes.I doubt it will ever happen...
A few years ago I told one of my soldiers that us wearing sunglasses in Iraq made us seem more dangerous because the iraqis couldn't see our eyes. I agree with this study though. The guys I went to Iraq the first time were all upstanding americans, they didn't break the law treated others with respect. But over there many of them abused their power as occupiers.Stealing, assaulting, and in some cases murdering.
is anyone curious of how the experiment would have turned out differently (if it would've turned out differently) if the prisoners and guards had been all female?
@paperfl0wers I actually doubt that women would have made a difference, in Milgram's experiment for example, both sexes acted alike. It might have been different in the way it escalated but I do think that when it comes to cruelty, men and women under group pressure and with more power than they should have, are equally capable.
@bambadep Lol once I saw that my comment was voted top comment I was waiting for the dick who posted a predictable misogynistic comment. Congratulations you win the completely unoriginal award. Next time maybe if you're a little more clever your comment might have more of impact but until then you'll just be the loser who can't think of anything clever and will take all the cheap shots you can get!
@bambadep You're asking me to think coherently and you actually used the phrase "y'know". Maybe if you learned how to type proper English I could take you more seriously.
@paperfl0wers Just like a woman to grasp at straws. If you need to resort to attacking grammatical errors, or rather a colloquialism, then you need to take a step back into the kitchen and get some air in your natural habitat.
@bambadep Okay, I'm just going to end this now. You are an ignorant, painfully simple minded, sad excuse for a human being. All you do is make general, unoriginal assumptions about people you don't even know based on the garbage that you hear from society. You are clearly unable to think logically. I am very grateful for the fact that I am intellectually superior to you and that rather than make a rude, general statement about a person based on his or hers race/gender/group etc
@bambadep . I actually take the time to get to know and understand a person. I wish people like you who just repeat things like a parrot with no clear mind or opinion would stop polluting our world but until then I can at least be thankful that you don't make up the world's entire population. Whatever senseless shit you write in response to this will be ignored. So go ahead, prove my point with a petty, unintelligent response. You're not worth answering though.
thinking on it the career jail and prison guards are in there all the time with the inmates even though they are getting paid what kind of life is that? I can't imagine they feel good about themselves honestly. all they talk about is how much they got drunk the night before their' shifts.
Jail is really like this luckily though reality television is getting up inside these places and making guards sherriffs and co's look in the mirror a little bit more.
I wonder if the people who were involved in this experiment would be interested in a reunion. I guess this year would have been the 40th anniversary. If they do a 50th anniversary the participants would be almost 70 by then... Dang...
Whats weird about this is,why use students. This stuff goes on everyday in jails across the country, just study the behavior there?? What a waste of resources and the real life jails are `REAL` and would produce more accurate results.Just my opinion though.
@badlegend1 it is changing though especially in my county where our sheriff was replaced for criminal activity and reality tv shows have invaded jails and prisons.
After watching this I started to consider the possibility that some of the guards in Los Angeles’s Twin Towers Jail might just be ordinary people in a bad environment and not the monsters I believe them to be. I was unfortunate to have spent 5 days in there 3 years ago and this is basically what goes on in that Jail and it’s not an experiment.
Google “Twin Towers Jail In The News” If you doubt what I am saying.
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN INTERESTING TO REVERSE THE ROLES BEFORE IT ENDED TO SEE IF THE PRISONERS WOULD ACT THE SAME AS THE GUARDS OR WOULD THEY BE MORE COMPASSIONATE BECAUSE OF THEM BEING PRISONERS OR WOULD THEY WANT REVENGE BECAUSE OF THE WAY THEY WERE TREATED
"John Wayne" should better stop smiling when talking about the experience. He is one hell of a scary bastard, capable of the worst. This guy's got some deep soul searching to do.

A few years ago I told one of my soldiers that us wearing sunglasses in Iraq made us seem more dangerous because the iraqis couldn't see our eyes. I agree with this study though. The guys I went to Iraq the first time were all upstanding americans, they didn't break the law treated others with respect. But over there many of them abused their power as occupiers.Stealing, assaulting, and in some cases murdering.

is anyone curious of how the experiment would have turned out differently (if it would've turned out differently) if the prisoners and guards had been all female?
paperfl0wers 2 months ago 50
@paperfl0wers Or if the guards were all male and prisoners were females.
Sonyphilia 1 month ago
@Sonyphilia Yeah that too.
paperfl0wers 1 month ago
@paperfl0wers I actually doubt that women would have made a difference, in Milgram's experiment for example, both sexes acted alike. It might have been different in the way it escalated but I do think that when it comes to cruelty, men and women under group pressure and with more power than they should have, are equally capable.

@paperfl0wers I was thinking that too. I was wondering what would be different if the subjects were older, and not college students.
kraz11funk5 1 month ago
@paperfl0wers Yea the females would have killed each other.
JGD1985 1 month ago
@paperfl0wers they didnt choose females because they are to "emotional" for this which is true tbf lol
sarahmjones1991 1 month ago
@paperfl0wers They'd be too busy cooking, cleaning and having periods to harass each other.
bambadep 1 month ago
@bambadep Lol once I saw that my comment was voted top comment I was waiting for the dick who posted a predictable misogynistic comment. Congratulations you win the completely unoriginal award. Next time maybe if you're a little more clever your comment might have more of impact but until then you'll just be the loser who can't think of anything clever and will take all the cheap shots you can get!
paperfl0wers 1 month ago
@paperfl0wers I couldn't hear you over the sounds of pots and pans making me something delicious.
bambadep 1 month ago
@bambadep Again, so unoriginal it's laughable. A cooking joke, really?

@paperfl0wers Hey, don't knock it, nothing like a woman's touch to make food taste better. Seriously, it's all they're good for.
bambadep 4 weeks ago
@bambadep You're still ignorant and bad at comebacks.
paperfl0wers 4 weeks ago
@paperfl0wers Hey, easy baby. I'm trying to enjoy this sandwich a woman made me and you keep harassing me. Talk about hypocritical!
bambadep 4 weeks ago
@bambadep my previous comment still stands

@paperfl0wers Try being the bigger man and stop trying to get the last word in. Oh wait, women are petty, sorry.
bambadep 4 weeks ago
@bambadep ...and that's not petty?
paperfl0wers 3 weeks ago
@paperfl0wers Yes, you are being very petty. I'm glad you're thinking like a man. Y'know, coherently.
bambadep 3 weeks ago
@bambadep You're asking me to think coherently and you actually used the phrase "y'know". Maybe if you learned how to type proper English I could take you more seriously.
paperfl0wers 3 weeks ago
@paperfl0wers Just like a woman to grasp at straws. If you need to resort to attacking grammatical errors, or rather a colloquialism, then you need to take a step back into the kitchen and get some air in your natural habitat.
bambadep 3 weeks ago
@bambadep Lol I knew you'd say that. Pathetic.
paperfl0wers 3 weeks ago
@paperfl0wers Uh huh, okay, baby. Don't get mad, that's how you get wrinkles. I know how much looks matter to a lady.
bambadep 3 weeks ago
@bambadep Okay, I'm just going to end this now. You are an ignorant, painfully simple minded, sad excuse for a human being. All you do is make general, unoriginal assumptions about people you don't even know based on the garbage that you hear from society. You are clearly unable to think logically. I am very grateful for the fact that I am intellectually superior to you and that rather than make a rude, general statement about a person based on his or hers race/gender/group etc
paperfl0wers 3 weeks ago
You're not worth answering though.
paperfl0wers 3 weeks ago
@paperfl0wers Alrighty! Looks like I won the argument! Good to see you've run out of nonsense!
bambadep 3 weeks ago
@paperfl0wers Nothing. Females have the same outlook as males. The outcome would have been similar.

thinking on it the career jail and prison guards are in there all the time with the inmates even though they are getting paid what kind of life is that? I can't imagine they feel good about themselves honestly. all they talk about is how much they got drunk the night before their' shifts.
tgm5150 2 months ago
Jail is really like this luckily though reality television is getting up inside these places and making guards sherriffs and co's look in the mirror a little bit more.
tgm5150 2 months ago
I wonder if the people who were involved in this experiment would be interested in a reunion. I guess this year would have been the 40th anniversary. If they do a 50th anniversary the participants would be almost 70 by then... Dang...

Whats weird about this is,why use students. This stuff goes on everyday in jails across the country, just study the behavior there?? What a waste of resources and the real life jails are `REAL` and would produce more accurate results.Just my opinion though.
badlegend1 3 months ago
@badlegend1 it is changing though especially in my county where our sheriff was replaced for criminal activity and reality tv shows have invaded jails and prisons.
tgm5150 2 months ago
@badlegend1 Wouldn't be controlled. If it happens in real jails, I doubt it would happen as much with a physiologist there.
