I work in a residential facility where we utilize such restraints and seclusions it is terrible that sometimes we as direct care staff have to utilize physical restraints but it is for the safty of the child. A few examples are a young lady was going to burn ber hand with an iron, a young lady was turning blue tying objects around her throat. I have seen scary terrible things. I have helped and healed as well. Most importantly I have saved lives.
either that or he'll try pring his own eyes out with a pencil or letter opener. I am thankful to the brave teachers left in america who would restrain a child from bodily harm, and the schools who understand that a DANGEROUS child should be locked in a room, before they mame/murder someone.
@ff8123 what kind of parent are you? I have to wonder about why this has happened to my child I pulled him out of school 6 times and you sit there saying your child is dangerous..well my child is only acting out from what has been done to him...dear God, what is this world coming to when a parent doe not come to aid in the defens of their ownchild?
When he does this, he usually locks himself in and begins screaming "i wanna throw up, Im going in the toilet", i get through the locked door, slap him across the face, and drag him out of the bathroom. When the child acts in clear defiance, you have to overpower them. PERIOD. do not BEAT them. But in this case, what am I to do? hes locked himself in the bathroom. he loves flushing items down the toilet breaking it.
I WANT him in a school with a padded room with teachers who can restrain him!
Lets NOT restrain kids when they go OUT OF CONTROL and present a clerar danger to those around them and themselves.
I dont care if they were autistic or not. If they're going to harmn themselves you have to restrain them in the short term until they are able to receive proper therapy. But if the child is in an insane rage / meltdown, you RESTRAIN THEM BY FORCE, or they could hurt themself or a classmate.
My nephew is autistic, and on occasion, he refuses to leave the bathroom
I am also a parent of a special needs child. My point is there are a lot of teachers that have proper training such as myself and other as well dealing with children in DD programs. More often then not, implications of negative doings during class time is reflected towards teachers and para educators when absolutely no harm has been done at all. More so in a negative way. My point is what do you do when you do the right thing and the child hurts themselves. Not enough parents care like you.
@mistupelo when a teacher is denied access to appropriate training, the teacher should ask the district to provide pbs training not crisis intervention training on passive restraint techniques..my son still has nightmares and is sufferering from post traumatic disorder as a result of what he has been subjected to...the school-system would not even allow me to particapate in developing his pbs plan. positive behavior support training and crisis intervention training are two different things .
I have worked in special education for 11 years now. It is a dangerous job with some of the kids who are students. They stab you, kick you, throw things at you, some students have compulsive explosive disorder so you don't know what is going to happen. A lot of the injures are self inflected too! Not say some of the staff is not responsible for a lot of injures, however, what are we as special ed teachers supposed to do with a raged child??????
@mistupelo yea but some dont deserve it I know I got sent to the room on occasions just for not doing my homework, not saying not to do it with the kids that could hurt themselves and others but some teachers, not nessisarily yourself, need to learn to asses as situation better
@YoukoKuwabara No child ever deserves to be harm while in any environment. I am also a parent of a special needs child as well as a teacher. More so then not, teachers and para educators are implicated when there is no harm done at all. It is disappointing. I have watched children in my 11 year of teaching special ed inflict harm upon there selves and the order for that particular child behavior intervention. Call the parent. Not enough parents care.
@mistupelo this concerns me deeply as a parent of a special needs child to read your comment. You as a teacher do not know what else to do because you have not been given the proper training. Positive Behavior Support Training and Crisis intervention training are two different things entirely. My son may never be the same thanks to three and a half years of mental and physical abuse from the school system!
@arlenazeek1 Apologies for your misunderstanding. I am also a parent of a 12 special needs child. My son is the reasoning for my career choice. Tried to reply directly to your posting, however, did not work that way. Please read my latest posting. It is in reply to this remark. Thanks for being a well rounded parent. Not enough of you out there.
@mistupelo Thanks..just am crying right now how so many people actually think that physical restraint and seclusion is the answer ...because it is not. my son now acts out the violence that has been done unto him.
I can't believe how people can go to sleep at night knowing that they have injured the spirit of a small child...my son may never be the same now.
I pray that he will be able to talk about what happened ...I hurt inside and cry myself to sleep at night...something must be done.
@arlenazeek1 Truly I know how you feel. I have been through a lot the same things with my child. The sad part is how many programs and funds that are available for special education classes and extended training to be done correctly and it still hasn't happened. With your strength and prayer, your son will be just fine.
Unfortunately, this video is misleading. Rarely do injuries occur during restraint of people with developmental disabilities. Both restraint and medication should be reduced where possible. Medication can cause Tardive Dyskinesia, an irreversible disorder, and even death. Thousands die from medication errors. Should we ban medications?
i was put in those rooms at Northpoint School 9650 Zelzah AveNorthridge, CA back in 93' or so f--ked up shit i would destroy them though my apologies to the families of those who didn't make it out
@edingtonz8 Children are dieing because of these faults. We need laws, the staff/teachers who are crossing the line, need to be held accountable! When we start throwing those misusing, abusing & killing children in jail that's when they will stop doing this to our children. I think that it should be mandatory for every teacher/staff to spend one week each year at the home of a special needs child, see how they are at home, how the parents work with them.
@edingtonz8 Positive Behavioral Support training along with early intervention so our children do not fall through the cracks of a faulty education system. Is that too much for a parent to ask for their children? these comments from teachers and aides who work with our children and who are suppossed to protect our children..this highly concerns me right now.
When I was 16 went t a day program and sometimes would end up in a baskethold cuz I am small. It was the popular restrant of the time 1990 cuz it required only one staff to do it. They essentially hold u from behhind crossing your arms over your chest in a hearhug type way. The scary part is the more u struggle the tighter they hold u thinking u r still out of control but sometimes u struggle harder cuz u cant breathe and many children have died in this hold and it is banned in many states now
I have been put in these rooms most of my childhood. From age 10-18 (1990-1998). I dropped out of school as soon as I could for my own protection. I was frequently locked in these rooms for all kinds of reasons. Once for just putting my head down when the teacher wouldn't help with a math problem. I have frequent nightmares and flashbacks of the rooms. I was diagnosed PTSD in 2005. It's an experience that will be with you for life. No child should have to experience those rooms.
You seem to have a vested interest in keeping restraint & seclusion around. Job security? There is a better way please educate yourself or go find another job! If you have to keep restraining & secluding a child, what you are doing isnt working. The definition of insanity is: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
The teachers in the South paddle, that is what they are trained to do, BUT: by Law if a parent leaves a mark it is abuse and Health and Wealfare step in and take the child. En locus parentas, this is what all schools, nation wide, claim as policy; en locus parents literaly translates to "in place of the parent." So if a teacher or school administrator leaves a mark, Health and Wealfre needs to do their job and take the child from the abusive enviornment! CONTACT YOU State Legislatures!!!.
Sorry, but 99% of teachers is s liberal percentage. I went to 20 schools in 7 states ina course of 13 years in my primary school years. I met maybe 5 teachers I REMEMBER, AND ONLY THOSE 5 AFFECTED ME IN A GOOD WAY. I HAD A TEAHCER WHO OPENLY BELITTLED HER STUDENTS AND LAUGHED AT THEM WHEN THEY MADE MISTAKES, I hated her.
I agree with previous commenters that we should have cameras in our schools. Just because people have degrees and work in schools does not mean they have any ethics. The staff responsible for these cases should be tried by law for criminal behavior. Period. No excuses.
when i was younger i went to alc its a behavior school and they had alot of young kids with autism and fetal alcohol syndrome and things like tht, tht made them freak out alot and they had a small padded room on the first floor and they used it EVERY day. tht was the first place the little kids would end up. and they also used CPI (a restraint technique) on the kids all the time.
Please urge federal and state authorities to conduct a serious investigation of ANDERSON CENTER FOR AUTISM in Staatsburg, New York. If you have personal experience with abuse at Anderson or know of someone who does, please contact me through youtube.
What a horrible thing to have to go through! I hope that all the families with children who are differently-abled get the support that they deserve and need. I myself am a teacher and have stopped abuse that was occurring at home. 99% of teachers are angels and let this not skew our view of the profession.

As a mental health aide with over 20 years of experience I have been there many times.
It is easy to second guess after the fact.
I think that it should be mandatory for every parent to work in a public school for at least one week each year.
I worked as a part time hall monitor for a few months and gained a whole new perspective.
