I love learning about all animals, and it is so great to know that there are people dedicated to taking care of such a tiny, defenseless bat, of which many other would just dismiss as insignificant. Bats always get into my apartment. While I use leather gloves to grab them out of fear of rabies, I think they are adorable and sweet when not scared. I have released them all outside after their capture, protecting them from my cat.

Gorgeous! I had a lump in my throat at the sight of this tiny thing rocking himself for comfort. Anyone who has ever gone "ewww, a bat" should watch this. I was lucky to be brought up to respect bats, even when they came down the chimney. No-one panicked...we caught them in a big coffee can with glass over it, took a look to see he was ok and released him. Bats are beneficial. So glad there are bat rescuers working to help bats. L'il Drac is wonderful and congrats to Batworld for their care.

@HumanPet19. Bats need specialized environments that include huge flight cages and dozens of roostmates to be happy in captivity. They can live 25 to 40 years in the wild, but when kept as pets they usually survive only a few weeks to a year. They suffer depression/loneliness just like people do, and we are a poor substitute for the companionship they need. The best place for them is in the wild, followed by a sanctuary that offers natural habitat settings and lots of bat friends.

We're way out in the country surrounded by woods & I was curious on your thoughts about bat houses. I want to encourage them to stay around and give them a safe place to go. How big of one would we need, what style & where's the safest place to put one? Does it need to be somewhere shaded & is there anything we can do to let them know the bat house is there to inhabiit?
