I think the Mafia's downfall was generational. The old school mobsters grew up in extreme poverty. They knew what rock bottom, to have nothing was. I don't agree...what Gotti did by taking out Castellano was create the mindset that if he could do that to Paul than he could do it to anyone; subsequently, anyone could have taken Gotti out too at some point...if Neil was named successor, Gotti would have been just as happy and maybe Gotti could have learned a little more from Neil as time went on and not been so public with things later if he became boss after Neil. Gambino made one mistake; that was naming Castellano boss...period
