@naturyl am watching this video again and I think I was wrong and You were right this is just a really crappy recording and vid,
unfortunatly we never got to see Roy in a live setting but my husband and I have been big fans of Roy Buchanan for 35 years way before youtube or PC'''s if you want to hear some rare stuff type into youtube bar Roy Buchanan Hot Wires. if you hav'nt heard it all ready I recomend #'s 1, 8,and 9 great stuff. no joke:)
I have my doubts as to weather this is Roy in the vidieo part of this joke of aperformance it's roy playing alright but even with the crappy picture quality you can see the performance is to animated for Roy's signature quietman demenor.
@gwlhbt58 "This joke of a performance?" What are you listening to? This is genius, and it's all Roy. I don't think you know anything about Roy if you think "quietman" was his "signature demeanor." Have you only heard "Sweet Dreams?"
This should be reposted, with better visual quality, and with the sound in synch. That being said, I don't think this is one of his better performances. I really do like him, but something isn't gelling here.
@Koureas true its called the acient art of guitar playing try watching the whole video nit the first 20 sec or maybe you prefer john mayer( in more than way than one?) j.k.
Just like others say... Roy had a superior technique and too much blues for playin', he had lost his time on any rock band... he had the blues... and he really knew how to make his guitar speak for him!
I firmly believe that Roy would not have been able to handle playing in a rock band. His talent was superior to anything then and now. I heard the Beck, Clapton tribute, but with all due respect, Roy sounded better than the two put together....
Not the best. There is no best anyway.Everyone is good at his own.But Roy was the most soulful guitarist, ever walked Earth!Really a guitarist, not a poser or a showman as most of the rest are...
On another 'tube video someone in the audience called out "You're Number One!!!" Buchanan replied by saying "There is no number one...But I love ya for thinking it." (or something to that effect.)
Roy was my friend. He did those effects by hand with only reverb. We did a version of Red House in Baker Park in Frederick one year with a couple drop in guys who brought horns OMFG I wish someone who might've taped it would come forward with a recording of that afternoon..
@TheDigitalDadonUTube Umm, no way is that just a reverb - it's clearly a delay (plus reverb). Probably a simple bucket-brigade analog delay pedal with the spring reverb from his amp, but you can get sounds like that out of a tape echo like a Roland Space Echo or a WEM Copicat too. But you can't get them with just a reverb (or at least not with the reverb technology available at that time).
@oeddie99 OK, It's quite possible that it's not a pedal - as I said it might be a hardware tape unit. But it is definitely not just a reverb - you can hear the individual echoes. And echo (AKA delay) FX are by definition not reverb FX - related but different. Roy died in 1988; by the late 70s digital FX units (not pedals - rack-mounted hardware) that did multi-FX including reverb and delay were also available. I've 35 years experience in pro music & production - what have you two got?
@oeddie99 (ran out of space - continues from my post beginning "OK, it's ...") The digital multiFX didn't become affordable or commonly used on stage until the early 80s. I've just checked Roy on Wikipedia, and guess what - from 1976 Roy used an Echoplex (hardware tape unit) and much later a Boss DD2 "the first mass-produced digital delay in a compact pedal format".
@oeddie99 Sorry if I came across as OTT. I shouldn't reply to posts when I've been drinking LOL. @MalquiLans & @TrapDaddy65 I wish I still had my Boss DM-2 delay - a really nice example of the bucket brigade pedals I mentioned in my original post. @childsplaymusic No problem cpm drunk posts are usually more interesting than sober posts of you can interpret them. Roy was...is,RIP,one of the all time Guitar Heroes.I had the honor of attending one of his performances, before he passed away. It was at this Great Funky, Honky Tonk at Solana Beach,San Diego.Appx ten miles north of La Jolla. You go there and you are at a regular 'old fashion bar', with a mini stage. It takes you, literally back in time. The bar is smaller than an arena stage. Saw B B King, John Lee Hooker there.Leon Russell was just there last week.It is called Belly Up. (BellyUp.com)
I saw Roy play while I was doing LSD at the Old Orpheum theater in Boston......He was Blowing my Mind. Telecasters are amaizing guitars. My lead guitar player had a Rose Wood Telecaster......beautiful in sound and in appearance.
Absolutely, one of the most underated guitarists there ever was!!!I'm a liitle late in coming to the party he was throwin' through his guitar-playing,but he was,and still is awesome!!All I'll say about his death,is that,it was unfortunate in coming, regardless of the circumstances!!Great footage of the Man in action!!R.I.P. thats like an exact cross between jimi hendrix and zz top. roys the man but its even better that he killed himself in jail with his own shirt. i think thats wat it was. he must have had a serious case of that blues shit. so do i and i hope to do somthing simular. check out my tunes.
I agree. One of the best I've ever seen, but can't sing for shit. Why didn't anyone just tell him: "dude, the vocals... umm.... maybe we should get a singer, because you just kinda talk, like you're on the phone, and it doesn't do your playing any justice at all."
No bests..only favorites. My fave if Jeff Beck...I can hear how much JB "borrowed" for Roy and then took it in another direction. Used to listen to Roy in the 70's and I forgot how incredible he was. What a dunce I am. He was amazing.
Either that or which video you watch - since all those douches go from vid to vid starting unending conversations about their thinking one guitarist is better, or faster, or plays with more "feeling", etc.
The below response is for the "creditsforcarbon" dufus. And by the way anyone who backs a lamebrain idea such as "credits" for carbon emissions cannot possibly be either sane or more likely over 22 years old..
credits i dont no if you ment that to sound racist but it did. he was an awsome guitarust and frankly i dont think many people care that hes black hes just one of the best if not the best guitarists of all time.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
When Hendrix was asked who he thought was the best player, he said Stevie Ray Vaughn. Hendrix got lots of play because he was the first electric black player to get major exposure at a major concert in which every song was recorded and made into an album. Exposure is what did it for him.
"CREDITS4CARBON" ...'Where did you get that False Information From ?" Stevie
Ray Vaughn wasn't even A NAME guitarist
when Hendrix was alive ! ACTUALLY - HENDRIX WAS STEVIES HERO AND STEVIE BUILT HIS GUITAR STYLE AROUND HENDRIX ! Since Your 108 years of Age - I would have thought that you'd know this because you've been around long enough to know !" And if you
haven't noticed after all these years,...JIMMY'S MUSIC FEATURES HEAVILY ON STEVIES C.D's AND IN HIS LIVE CONCERTS! 108yrs Old?!
You're a funny guy. Given that Jimi Hendrix died in September of 1970, a point in time at which SRV was not yet 16 years old, I doubt very much that Jimi was citing SRV concerning anything. Further, it is a well known fact that SRV and his brother Jimmy taught themselves to play guitar, partly by listening to Hendrix tunes.
When Hendrix played there was not born Vaughan, jaja. Also he said Rory Gallagher. Rory Gallagher is the best, Buchanan is one of the best ever! And Hendrix and Vaughan have more fame another thing. Rory and Roy UP Hendrix and Vaughan DOWN.
ACTUALLY he said BILLY GIBBONS! It is documented...he said it on the tonight show with Johnny Carson! Stevie Ray was around, but not quite developed yet .
BILLY GIBBONS of ZZ TOP is the man Jimi said was the best. HOWEVER, he jammed with Roy Buchanan and left in a daze, saying he had just been blown away according to a biography of him. FACT dude!
Well he's may be the best, but the first "revolutionary" was CLAPTON (I mean "modern revolutionary", otherwise we should mention Chuck Berry or the likes).
I'm going to make me not to discuss but the first revolution was hendrix a part of that hendrix did nothing more, Blackmore is better than hendrix. Clapton is very good too, but only in ealy years with Cream, with Cream was god, and Rory and Roy are two guitarists of made the guitar talk ..... that in fact this is the most important for to be a great guitarist.
I am a huge RB fan, saw him LIVE many times back east. Never got to see Jimi H. ,but grew up with his Electric Lady land Lp and all of his music back in the day. They both have there own styles that complement each othe,r so let the listener make there own call. ps ---GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!
no negative feedback "floofynut". i threw out the concept that, while i love what hendrix did for the guitar, and is regarded as the king for it, he may not ultimately be the guitar king when compared to other masters. i happen to think rb was far better than jh. opinion only. (as usual, i am very opinionated.) just thought i would hear someone else's opinion for a change on rb. he is not my favorite (unless beer is involved) , but i love to listen to him. arguments and advice welcome.
hendrix would NOT wipe the floor with roy. both are great. and to be fair roy is probably better technically and has slightly more soul. however both are amazing. please dont give me negative feedback, i'm just saying both are great :)
When you arrive at the level Jimi and Roy play at, "better" is a totally obsolete term. Both of them had nearly perfect control over their instruments. Most people say one virtuoso is "better" than another when they really mean that they just prefer the other's sound, or when they just want to stir up shit.
I saw Roy in Houston at Rockafellers....must have been '87 or '88.. This bass player was with him. I remember that green Fender. I was really impressed with him. I don't know who he is. Does anyone?
I think the bassist is Jeff Ganz. I'm currently reading Roy's biography, American Axe. It says his rhythm section at the time was made up of Ganz on bass and Ray Marchica on drums.
WOW! that bass does sound kind of clunky.Too bad cause the guitar is awesome.I have a 8 year old cuz that can play circles around this awefull bass player.
Bass or no bass Roy is absolutely without a doubt thee best! Now I heard a rumor - can anyone confirm - that Roy hung himself in a jail cell? 'hope that's not true my cuz used to play with him in the late 70's and actually had him come to a small town north of Pittsburgh Pa and played... 'don't know what hapened to my cuz either...
Don't worry carpybv; I totally agree with you; you're not alone in wishing Roy had a more complementary bass player/sound for this concert. Way way too "metallic" sound coming from the bass; It's just a 3 piece band, the bass should be deep and thumped, solid, in the groove, setting the foundation for Roy to scream.
@naturyl PS I stick to my Quiet man remark we all see people in our own perspective.

No bests..only favorites. My fave if Jeff Beck...I can hear how much JB "borrowed" for Roy and then took it in another direction. Used to listen to Roy in the 70's and I forgot how incredible he was. What a dunce I am. He was amazing.
hugointhecity 2 years ago 2
Either that or which video you watch - since all those douches go from vid to vid starting unending conversations about their thinking one guitarist is better, or faster, or plays with more "feeling", etc.

well stated! and I could not agree more.

The below response is for the "creditsforcarbon" dufus. And by the way anyone who backs a lamebrain idea such as "credits" for carbon emissions cannot possibly be either sane or more likely over 22 years old..

"HENDRIX" Will Never Lose His Place In The History Of Electric Guitar Music - because HE WAS THE FIRST REVOLUTIONARY! HE WAS THE FIRST
TO TAKE THE ELECTRIC GUITAR TO PLACES THAT NO ONE HAD EVER HEARD BEFORE, PLACES THAT OTHER GUITARISTS HAD NEVER EVEN VISITED!
After He 'paved the way' and 'Cut the path'
for others to follow - It was then easier for
other 'Guitarslingers' to Imitate him or else to build upon the foundation that he laid ! But Roy B is certainly up there with the BEST ! "

This comment has received too many negative votes show
When Hendrix was asked who he thought was the best player, he said Stevie Ray Vaughn. Hendrix got lots of play because he was the first electric black player to get major exposure at a major concert in which every song was recorded and made into an album. Exposure is what did it for him.
CREDITS4CARBON 2 years ago

@beethovenbix . Who you tellin"? Albert King was Stevie's Daddy!
squaredave2002 1 year ago
You're a funny guy. Given that Jimi Hendrix died in September of 1970, a point in time at which SRV was not yet 16 years old, I doubt very much that Jimi was citing SRV concerning anything. Further, it is a well known fact that SRV and his brother Jimmy taught themselves to play guitar, partly by listening to Hendrix tunes.

He said Rory Gallagher I believe
bush555 2 years ago
When Hendrix played there was not born Vaughan, jaja. Also he said Rory Gallagher. Rory Gallagher is the best, Buchanan is one of the best ever! And Hendrix and Vaughan have more fame another thing. Rory and Roy UP Hendrix and Vaughan DOWN.
PurpleAndZeppelin 2 years ago

The only solution is for you guys to be locked in a room and have a guitar face-off! Without a doubt it would be the greatest performance ever.

(as usual, i am very opinionated.) just thought i would hear someone else's opinion for a change on rb. he is not my favorite (unless beer is involved) , but i love to listen to him. arguments and advice welcome.

hendrix who? someone please argue the case that he understood his guitar better than buchanan, because i don't get it.

hendrix would NOT wipe the floor with roy. both are great. and to be fair roy is probably better technically and has slightly more soul. however both are amazing. please dont give me negative feedback, i'm just saying both are great :)
floofynut 3 years ago 12
Both were genious, both died in weird ways, both played on Fender axes. Need more comparison ?
sha4096 3 years ago
exactly thts whay i said.both are great.:) i just hate it when ppl always say someone is better than the other :)

@floofynut true, but id still say on the soul front they are on par IMHO

@floofynut ... they would wipe the floor together.

@floofynut I'm pretty sure that none of them would want us to vote for the best. They are both great.
officernikos 1 year ago
When you arrive at the level Jimi and Roy play at, "better" is a totally obsolete term. Both of them had nearly perfect control over their instruments. Most people say one virtuoso is "better" than another when they really mean that they just prefer the other's sound, or when they just want to stir up shit.

I saw Roy in Houston at Rockafellers....must have been '87 or '88.. This bass player was with him. I remember that green Fender. I was really impressed with him. I don't know who he is. Does anyone?
rrpsteve 3 years ago
I think the bassist is Jeff Ganz. I'm currently reading Roy's biography, American Axe. It says his rhythm section at the time was made up of Ganz on bass and Ray Marchica on drums.

That's the story the Texas Law say's , that they found him hanging in his jail cell.
There was also stories of unexplained physical
marks etc.on him......what a terrible ending to such an Awesome Talent....He was Titled :
The World's Best Un-Known Guitarist.
Ain't it strange how we lost SO MANY greats in that mid-late 80's era...? Then how other's
career's exploded...? hmmm...
owlman33 3 years ago
It was not in Texas. It was in Fairfax Virginia August 15 and i believe it was in 1988. Not sure

'don't know what hapened to my cuz either...

some of the worst bass playing i've ever heard in my life. i don't care if i offend anyone with that comment - sue me!!
carpybv 3 years ago
Don't worry carpybv; I totally agree with you; you're not alone in wishing Roy had a more complementary bass player/sound for this concert. Way way too "metallic" sound coming from the bass; It's just a 3 piece band, the bass should be deep and thumped, solid, in the groove, setting the foundation for Roy to scream.

The God of Telecaster.
The Telecaster is the ultimative Tool.

I still say,at 7:24, that is Rimsky Korsakov`s,"Flight of the bumble bee. But I guess Only Roy would know!

no offense, but then you probably have no idea of guitar playing. he simply fades in with the volume knob and a delay, really nothing special.
roy is a great guitarist and he can play way more better stuff :)
