Smith was a canny fighter, maybe not the best as shown here, but he wasn't reckless and trying to be the big man. He saw what Tyson could do and respectfully fought clever.
Tyson's movement at this time/period was just fast, lightning
See how disciplined Mike was? Under Rooney, he was a machine. Speed, power, endurance, and patience. Smith has a great left jab, he's 6'4" 230+ and in great shape. So the idea that Ali, Lewis, etc., would have beaten a Prime Mike is absurd. He knew how to fight these guys when he was focused. When he went with Don King, it just became a paycheck to him.
god i hate edited versions of fights probably king editing the good smith moments he already deprived us of the tyson holyfield fight on youtube not wanting people how badly he got his ass kicked
Tyson's superior Head movement made them look like that.
in the 80's , Tyson was very hard to hit clean, but when he left Rooney, his head movement never been the same, & thats why he eventually lost to Douglas, Holyfeild, Lewis & others.
@nevawrong In his prime? Tyson was 23 when he lost to Douglas man, get real.Tyson was too small to do any real damage to Mitch Green, James Smith, Toney Tucker, or Buster Douglas, cause they are all at least 6'3 1/2.Can you imagine what a Klitschko would do to this guy? Wlad by lopsided, easy UD. Vitali by easier mid fight KO, imho. Too big, too strong, too good. Its a whole new ball game these days!
@nevawrong Took Douglas light? Smith held? Green and Tucker were too tough to ko? Oh, I see. Tyson was the best ko artist ever, and when he faced a good big man, its just a coincidence he couldnt score a ko, it had nothing to do with there size or skill. I get it.Tyson is the one who came up when the division sucked. as soon as tough contenders came around, he got fucking pounded. If the Klits were around in the 80's, everyone would say "the 80's sucked. Tyson was way out of his league."
@nevawrong He didnt ko Rudduck, that was crap and you know it.Those are great fights that really show Mikes grit, something Teddy Atlas seems to forget about when hes knocking Mikes courage. Tell me, who is Mikes career defining win? Little Spinks? I like the first Bruno fight.
@dan4579 joe louis lost in his prime those big guys did hold tyson too much thats why tyson got the easy decisions ang the klistschos' are both on steroids
@kingzula Part of it is that Rooney tried to continue D'amato's legacy in the Catskills and he specialises in a style of boxing only a handful of people have ever used.
@capablemachine rooney did nothing after tyson that says it all. the good trainers train the good fighters and are asked to train other fighters. no one good was asking for rooney
@kingzula I just explained why he stayed in the catskills and he specialises in peek-a-boo which very few pro's use. World class fighters and trainers say he was a good trainer. You're a nobody with an unreasonable bias so you're the one with the problem.
@capablemachine no he wasnt wanted by other fighters. a good trainer could look at a fighter and train him to use his best attributes. to say he was a specialist is an excuse. he is overrated. good trainers are sought out.
@kingzula Other fighters don't pick the trainers, that's why they have managers. The best trainers in the world do not say he is not overrated. Good trainers trump your uneducated, unreasonable bias.
@capablemachine yes managers pick trainers and they do not seek him. older fighters pick their trainers and they dont seek him. he was a rookie when he trained tyson, took way too much of the pie for a guy who didnt train a pro before tyson. and didnt do much since. he is not considered a great trainer within boxing.
@kingzula What do you know about the managers seeking trainsers? Nothing? Yes I thought so. The percentages contract of Tyson with Rooney and Cayton gave Tyson the biggest percentage of his earnings in his entire career so Rooney took the least. He is considered a great trainer within boxing and poor trainer by those who base their opinions on heresay and conjecture.
@capablemachine wrong nobody gets as much as rooney did to train tyson and cayton also took to much. they were ripping off tyson even before don king did. they were taking half his salary. he is considered good by the people who are into the fairytale of boxing. but not within boxing circles thats why he doesnt get offers
@kingzula Cayton and Jacobs took 30 percent which is 15 percent per person and covered all of Mike's costs from hs teen years. Yet again more unsubstantiated heresay and nonsense by someone who thinks chinese whispers on the internet are fact.
@capablemachine cayton took 33% and rooney took 15% which is way to much. no trainer makes today what rooney made back then and that was 25yrs ago. they took to much and neither of them cared any more than don king.. they all ripped him of. all of them !!!!! where did you get your facts??
@MultiGreat1 so whats your info smart guy?. bill cayton was taking 33% of tyson income. rooney got 3mill dollars for the spinks fight those are facts whats your facts? mike tyson said that in his last documentary. the only one when tyson himself speaks.
@MultiGreat1 you didn't answer my question what info do you have on the subject? when tyson sued cayton tyson said that cayton was getting too much of the pie. cayton agreed in a settlement that he would reduce his take to 20% and gave up his power over mike tyson. after that cayton did not make any decisions for tyson but got 20% until his contract expired. fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!! google tyson cayton lawsuit
@kingzula and Tyson went on a steep decline after Rooney. Saying that Rooney was a garbage trainer is like saying Tyson was a garbage boxer. Fact is they complimented each other, Rooney knew Mike's style and Mike was brought up to box in that manner so it worked well. Other examples of boxers who could really only be trained by one person include Naseem Hamed, only Brendan Ingle really knew Nas's style, Ricky Hatton, didnt have the intensity once he got rid of Billy Graham. See what I am saying?
@joevtr no they all had issues outside the ring that contributed to the decline. tyson had many issues outside the ring that lead to his mental breakdown. i didnt say rooney was garbage just overrated. hatton also had issues outside the ring that lead to his downfall. also no trainer would have helped hatton beat maywheather
@nevawrong I agree, He sparred with Lewis at 15/16 and Lewis said he was still in amateur mode and learned it was the pain buisness. He probably was not same from Cus died. But you can see deterioration between Spinks fight and Bruno fight in 88, I don't think he was throwing fast 4 punch combinations, ( Rooney left him) jail, he was doing it for family and not in love with boxing. For me Holyfield headbutted him alot. Which the head movement would have stopped.
@nevawrong Well here's Mike Tyson in his prime and he's pretty shit. You really think Cus and Rooney would have let him fight Lewis? No. Lewis was too big and too strong. The truth is, anytime Tyson fought someone good he lost. His prime lasted 2 years so we'll never know if he was great even then as he didn't fight anybody good.
@MrBbuds Tyson lasted a significant amount of time on both Lennox and Evander, God only knows what an 80s Tyson could pull off, Tysons prime was not 2 years it was within a 5 year period, and even then i believe Tyson wasnt as prime as he could have been, too much shit mentally happening to him in the mid 80s. To say a Tyson from the 90s and 2000s could stand the chance he did with evander and lennox gives a pretty good idea of what his performance could have been during the 80s.
@MrBbuds (cont) and fighting someone "good" is pretty much opinionated, Larry homles, spinks, Berbick(who tyson beat to become the youngest WHC), Thomas, Bruno, Tillis etc. are all good fighters who else could Tyson have fought in the 80s?? Lennox and Evander were both not ready for Tyson, so its a matter of them fighting tyson in his prime when they arent ready or them fighting tyson when they are ready regardless if tyson is a prime fighter, which he wasnt when they got to him.
@403766 Holmes was 2 years retired and only 3 years removed from being heavyweight champion. Even though we all knew Holmes would lose against Tyson, it was much more plausible to see Holmes in the ring against Tyson than Foreman, who was 15 years removed from the title. Foreman never lost his power but the man was WAY too slow at the time to fight Tyson. It's all subject to opinion of course, but Tyson in 87 or 88 was WAY too fast and George was WAY too easy to hit. My opinion.
@403766 Be realistic man. When Foreman was talking about fighting Tyson, Tyson was at his best and Foreman was just coming out of retirement, fat, slow, nothing but punching power. In 87 and 88 when Foreman was talking about a Tyson fight there was no way in hell he would have stood a chance against Mike. There was no reason what so ever for Mike to fight Foreman at that point. Foreman hadn't even done anything to warrant a fight with Tyson at that time. So why should he have fought him?

According to the book "Fire and Fear" Tyson reported to the arena that night with a case of VD. His handlers gave him a megadose of antibiotics, and that took something out of him. Of course, he won the fight anyway, but if you look at how Mike knocked the snot out of Smith in the first round, you have to wonder if, on a better night, Mike might have taken him out earlier.
@bigdatut Makes sense that he looks sapped. Atlas claims it's because Mike Tyson is agreeing to a "silent treaty" about not punching on the inside but it's Atlas projecting some more bullshit as usual.
people dissing tyson if u study carefully u realise tyson was only 5"11 most of his opponents were giants compared to him and he cleanly disposed of most of them also we all know tyson lost interest in boxing few years after cus died i beleive he only boxed for money after that. TYSON IS THE THE GREATEST FIGHTER TO HAVE NOT FULLFILLED HIS CAPABILITIES!!!
Smith was on a roll. Just ko'd terrible tim in 1 round and after that fight,he spoke how ready he was tpo beat tyson so there was no intimidation factor for tyson here, tyson was just sooo good mentally/physically and defensively! This tyson could have beaten ali, lewis and holyfield. We all forget how much tyson declined even in his prime.
If they could have both stayed focused and clean, a great old fantasy matchup would have been Bert Cooper vs Mike Tyson. Bert had alot of drug problems, but when he was "on" he was like a mirror image of Mike. I would have loved to see that fight in both their primes. I would also have liked to see the 90s Foreman vs the 90s Bonecrusher.
@treetoptop Frazier was Coopers mentor, would have been a cracker! I would take Tyson though, sharper shorter punches, I can see Tyson getting in and ending it in the mid rounds
@XionComrade Very intelligent breakdown Xion, thank you. If Bert could have stayed clean and focused, I see that being a great fight. Joe Frazier has said that Bert was the best natural puncher he ever saw. Coming from the great Joe Frazier, that is some statement. Bert just had a comeback fight and won by the way.
Tyson had big shoulders that protected his head, and he had super-fast reflexes. He ducks and comes back up quicker than Smith can punch. Smith, meanwhile, isn't using his long jab to keep Tyson back, and he keeps leaving himself wide open. He has Ali's height, but no the speed.
Gotta give it to," Bone Crusher" Smith he made tyson Miss ALOT, hasnt really hit Smith that much, Tyson was never an accurate fighter, just powerful as all mighty hell
@mr1derful112 Never an accurate fighter? hmm. Tyson in his prime was very precise with his punches. If power was all Mike had he'd still be champ. A fighter's punching power never goes away. It was his precision and accuracy that got that power to it's target.
Fighters like bone-crusher, could only delay the punishment that Tyson delivered. Fending Tyson off with reach, and tying him up, on the inside. At peak, even in such cases, Tyson's wins were dominant. But too often, Tyson's wins came in a flash, within the first few rounds of the fight, and that was the hallmark of his greatness. "A win, is a win" perspective, has often resulted in laudable conclusions......There are, certainly, finer measures of greatness.
@lewisluvscornwall2k9 - If only Tyson didn't slack in his training against Douglas and/or didn't end up in prison. And if only Ibeabuchi was able to hold it together long enough to at least get a shot at the title. Ibeabuchi's case is a tragedy, because he looked like he was the next big thing as far as heavyweights are concerned. Today people describe him as a combination of Tyson & Holyfield (prime versions).
Anyone that happens to read this before watching Tyson-Smith - don't waste your time - this was one of the most boring fights of all time due to Smith's repeated holding on for dear life! Find another fight to watch.
@cypriotgeeza mike started to suffer heavily from stress in 1987 after wining the title caused him to lose some of his hair .thats why he has the bald patch, the medical term for this condition is ,,alopecia...he still the best ever
its nice to c a proper conversation wit two guys who no excactly what there tlkin about for a change and holyfield was so under rated its not even funny thank guys peace
One thing that Liston and Tyson did have in common was that many of their opponents were scared stiff going into their fights. They both had an aura of violence and destruction that was uncommon.
I also hear Liston, like Tyson, was a softy for kids. Tyson especially with his time with "special needs people."
Which is funny given how they are perceived while you have other guys that put on an act in front of the cameras and are selfish assholes behind it but are looked at as "nice guys."
I always got the impression that Sonny was alot smarter than he was percieved. He just wasnt educated but he had some wit. Some of the things he said were quite funny.
He was Smart from what I heard. He wasn't literate but that is different type of intelligence. Liston was street-smart and had other abilities in intelligence. He wasn't some dumb brute. There are many forms of intelligence. You can't learn Boxing on that level like Liston did and be dumb. And you can't survive in Liston's life as long as he did and be dumb. But he did have his vices and did have problems like everybody else.
Sonny did what he needed to do to survive. He was as much sinned against as he was a sinner. The fact that he made anything out of his life pretty incredible.
When I think of somebody who was really dumb somebody like Leon Spinks comes to mind. That may be harsh but he did some stupid things.
But with Tyson at least, he was liked at the start and he blew it. With Liston, maybe the Mob thing and other vices (which all people have lincluding Louis) wasn't such a good thing.
But go to that article with Holyfield and think about both. I'll send it.
Liston was an incredible fighter so it would be interesting.
I've always thought Liston was a great boxer/fighter. It's a shame he didn't come sooner because I would have liked to have seen him match up against Marciano. It would test Marciano's ability to fight a good 200+ pound HW.
your right,a prime ali would have gave mike problems. your right foreman did hit hard, but foreman was just too slow for a "in his prime tyson"ali beat guys with his mouth first..he talked them outta there game in the press confrence.ali was actually afraid of foreman and liston...but got in their heads before the fight.i truely belive a young mike tysons power, speed, head movement, and FEROSITY,would have gave all the greats of the past..some serious problems.
tyson was taken the distance by quick tillis- who was basically a poor imitation of ali, but tillis gave him trouble- imagine what a prime ali wouldve done?
was als taken the distance by mitch green, smith, tucker, & ruddock- all lesser fighters than ali- so theres no reason to think ali couldnt last the distance with tyson.. ali beat better fighters than tyson ever beat, he proved the doubters wrong time & time again, thats why ali is the greatest, & thats why tyson falls short
all of the handlers other than cus,and andy ronney is what make tyson act that way.and don king aint no help either.if tyson could have had cus his whole career..he would have been the hella great.PRINCEDOZA..i just found out??? fucker im forty y/o..iv been around to see these fights for years.AIL mouth won all his fights combined with great skill...also what made him the greatest..he stood up for our rights!.TYSON=WAS JUST A FUCKIN BEAST.if frazier hurt ali with that hook, imagine TYSONS.
remember that foreman hits at least as hard as tyson, if not harder- & so did liston! & ali beat both those guys...
frazier wasnt as powerful or fast as tyson, but he had much better work rate & stamina- tyson went past 7 rounds 9 times in his career, but only scored a ko in 1 of those fights, the other 8 fights either went the distance or tyson was ko'd- which means if u last past the 7th with tyson- he aint gonna knock u out... his power fades in fights, where as fraziers didnt
taekwondojunkie knows nothing about boxing, you've just found out about the classical fighters and your trying to oversimplify decades of great champions. you know nothing lol
I'm a big Tyson fan. Out of the oldschool fighters though, I think Ali would have given him the toughest go. Ali did that all of his career when he beat guys he wasn't supposed to. I think if Ali could have gotten Mike to the later rounds, he would of had a chance. However, if Ali would of gotten caught with one of those hooks like Frazier caught him, I don't see Ali getting up from one of those. That would of been a good fight to see.
lol you got to be the dumbest muther fucker around.ali was VRY easy to hit.lmao and liston???plz hahahahah liston was a fuckin joke.foreman???.do the math bozo..he would have been entirely too slow for a young mike tyson..wake up BOY!
ALI=was easy to hit,FOREMAN=was VERY slow,LISTON=no boxing talent,FRAZIER=could not stand up to a tyson punch.(watch the foreman/frazier bout)..HOLMES=prolly would have had a chance.(lighting fast jab)if tyson gave him a chance to jab that is.if it took foreman three times to put frazier down..what you think TYSON would have done to him?tysons puches were more accurate and more devastating than foremans ever was.foreman didnt have hooks like tyson,.killer uppercutts..constant movement.THINK.
wow. I stopped reading at "Liston=no boxing talent". Liston is the only man who ever backed up and nearly knocked out Foreman in their sparring matches. He's a legend. You say that foreman didn't have hooks llike tyson. you're right. foreman had BRUTE STRENGTH. watch the holyfield/foreman fight. Foreman took massive punishment and dished out hard shots all night long. He had a granite chin in his prime days. I'm not saying that foreman would win against tyson, but it'd be a hell of a fight.
lol yea liston was a pure "bum"...i have to agree with one thing..foreman prolly would have gave tyson problems with the looooong jab.but he was seriously too slow for a young mike tyson.
Mentally weak at that time....which was after a 3 year stint in Prison and after all the other b.s. in his life before it. But it is arguable where his mental strength was at the time of his winning the title on through his unifying the title. But there was something to say about his overall mental strength since he made poor choices and was a person that was taken advantage of.
Although the same can be said about Ali and many others as well. Maybe not in the ring with Ali but overall.
liston was a joke..did you forget the head and body movement of tyson?..liston would have never hit tyson with a jab..he would have had to walk thru a bobbing and weaving tyson.(peek a boo) style. ultimatly gettin his dumb ass knocked out!
Tyson`s headmovement and workrate diminished when he started getting tagged and hurt. Liston would certainly land his jab and that would set Mike up for those uppercuts and hooks.
Tyson would not want to come forward after Sonny started jolting him but it would be a matter of time because Tyson cant fight but one way.
man im not gunna get on here to argue shit with you with "chat fighting".and by the way...if i didnt KNOW shit...then how come i spelled "KNOW" the fuckin correct way and your dumb ass (who dont KNOW shit) spelled it wrong! dumb ass!
Liston had one of the most powerful jabs in the history of boxing. Maybe the most powerful. That is the lead punch. The punch that sets up all the others.
The left jab that jolts and stuns Tyson, causing him to hesitate coming in. Also busting up his features.
When Mike does get inside Liston is strong enough to control Tyson and at least hold his own in there.
It's not so much about Power as much as it is making that Power connect; that's when it becomes effective....which would be harder against someone like a Peak Tyson. Same reason why Tyson wasn't as effective when he stopped training the correct way. Liston was good at timing...no question...but so was Tyson with anticipation and his own speed to react which seems to get little talk because most seem to pay attention to last thing they remember.
I forget which person mentioned it but he said the most incredible part of Tyson's speed was something many don't point out...and fighters don't have quite like him...which is the ability to instantly react. Now of course, that's part "born talent' but a lot has to do with training that born talent which means if you don't train it, it goes hidden...which again, we saw with Tyson at different points in his career. Tyson made faster guys (with their jab) miss when he trained for it
...which again...shows the importance of training the correct way. Liston's Jab was a slow Jab but he did have good timing and accuracy. Tyson really didn't have as much trouble as people like to think with the Jab as he progressed as seen in some of his Pro fights compared to his amateur days. He also had different tactics to counter the Jab...which he can use his own Jab right back (which is fast, accurate, and powerful)...or find another way to counter it.
The same thing you mentioned about Tyson not having the same commitment to training as his career wore on, you could say the same about Sonny Liston.
Take a look at a truly prime Liston from the late 50s before he won the title. He wasnt as slow as you may think from watching those fights with Clay/Ali in the mid 60s.
He was like a BigCat. Quick hands and his ability to move was suprising for a man that size. He took a helluva punch as well.
@Robstailey: holmes, spinks (at the time, many ppl thought spinks would put an end to tyson), Ruddock, etc. Tyson is regarded highly not because of the fighters he has beaten, but rather because of the manner in which he beat them (tyson knocked out many of them in a brutal fashion usually in the early rounds).
ummm. no he can't. usually the boxer who runs out swinging is the one that ends up getting knocked out. Tyson never came out swinging haphazardly. he was meticulous and very technical in his agressiveness.
Personally, I don't think Tyson is the best heavyweight boxer of all time. but he definitely is in the top 10.
painfully elementary analysis. You are one of those frankly depressing individuals who are unable, inexplicably, to recognise that Tyson at his best was a great fighter.
@explosive: he got his butt whooped? how? tyson had 6 losses in his career. three of which were to legendary heavies: Holyfield (twice) and Lewis. The douglass fight was tyson's fault (overconfidence). and the mcbride and williams fights were more or less done for money (he quit the mcbride fight and got his knee blown out in the williams bout).
Mike Tyson is far from the best heavyweight in the world (imo he's #11). but to say that his defense was a myth is ludicrous.
Past his peak after the Spinks fight. Something that many in the field from Writers, Trainers, and Fighters have all mentioned the difference. It comes down to choices he made...choices that changed his mind-set and ability as a fighter because he didn't properly train the right way anymore.
Boxing is something you have to continue to work at...to not only keep at the level you are fighting at but to also improve on it. Tyson failed to do both after Spinks which was the real exposing.
Foreman`s hands in this younger years were not really slow. He had most his power down low in those uppercuts. That was his wheelhouse. Tyson would be right down there in the eye of the storm.
He also had a big jab that would jolt Mike down to his heels. Then he poured in those uppercuts.
Had George Foreman fought Tyson back in the 90s, I believe Tyson may have won. As much as i hate to say it, at that point Big George had lost much of his speed. However, a prime Foreman would've gutted Mike 9 times outta 10.
man,you are seriously out of your mind..its just safe to say you dont like tyson.a young and at the top of his game MIKE TYSON..would have killed SONNY LISTON..ALI, FOREMAN,FRAZIER,NORTON,LARRY HOLMES.all of em..them guys were great fighters.however even them all in their prime could not even begin to know how to deal with a heavy weight with such SPEED and POWER...not to mention FEROSITY.tyson= the most dangerous fighter to ever have lived.
wtf? calm down bro. I love tyson as much as the next guy but seriously, do u think before you type these things? Tyson himself admitted that a prime George Foreman would've given him problems. In fact, he idolized Foreman's aggression in the ring. I agree that tyson's the most dangerous fighter to have ever lived, but saying that he would kill a prime foreman is nothing short of retarded.
It's obvious that YOU don't know BOXING. How does it feel to have an opinion that is not shared by one boxing expert on the planet? Do you realize that?

"KLITSCHKO" ??, lol lol lol LMAO LMAO !
you cant be serious,

dan4579 8 months ago
@dan4579 @dan4579 u still sound stupid, lol, every KO artist couldnt KO everybody,
Foreman couldnt KO Jimmy Young.
Shavers didnt KO Lyle & Holmes.. & every other KO artist couldnt KO everybody they fought.
& like i said, Lewis was bigger than Tyson & may have even hit harder, yet Lewis still couldnt KO Tucker either.
But Tyson was the first ever to KO Pinklon Thomas, Berbick, Spinks & Biggs.
& he KO'd Tubbs, Golota, Ribalta, Williams, Bruno, Holmes, Rudduck, & many more.
thats impressive
nevawrong 8 months ago
@nevawrong He didnt ko Rudduck, that was crap and you know it.Those are great fights that really show Mikes grit, something Teddy Atlas seems to forget about when hes knocking Mikes courage. Tell me, who is Mikes career defining win? Little Spinks? I like the first Bruno fight.
dan4579 8 months ago
@dan4579
yeah, "Little Spinks",
makes me wonder why big strong hard punching COONEY couldnt KO him.

@kingzula World class trainers and fighters say he's a good trainer.
capablemachine 7 months ago
@capablemachine so why didnt these world class fighters ask him to train them if he was so great???
kingzula 7 months ago
@kingzula Part of it is that Rooney tried to continue D'amato's legacy in the Catskills and he specialises in a style of boxing only a handful of people have ever used.
capablemachine 7 months ago
@capablemachine no he was overrated !!!! bill cayton wanted rooney to train tommy morrison but morrisons people wanted no part of him
kingzula 7 months ago
@kingzula Well then they made a poor decision. There's more to the D'amato system than saying "use your 7".
capablemachine 7 months ago
@capablemachine no he was an alcoholic and had many personal problems himself he did not give tyson stability
kingzula 7 months ago
@capablemachine rooney did nothing after tyson that says it all. the good trainers train the good fighters and are asked to train other fighters. no one good was asking for rooney
kingzula 7 months ago
@kingzula I just explained why he stayed in the catskills and he specialises in peek-a-boo which very few pro's use. World class fighters and trainers say he was a good trainer. You're a nobody with an unreasonable bias so you're the one with the problem.
capablemachine 7 months ago
@capablemachine no he wasnt wanted by other fighters. a good trainer could look at a fighter and train him to use his best attributes. to say he was a specialist is an excuse. he is overrated. good trainers are sought out.
kingzula 7 months ago
@kingzula Other fighters don't pick the trainers, that's why they have managers. The best trainers in the world do not say he is not overrated. Good trainers trump your uneducated, unreasonable bias.
capablemachine 7 months ago
@capablemachine yes managers pick trainers and they do not seek him. older fighters pick their trainers and they dont seek him. he was a rookie when he trained tyson, took way too much of the pie for a guy who didnt train a pro before tyson. and didnt do much since. he is not considered a great trainer within boxing.
kingzula 7 months ago
@kingzula What do you know about the managers seeking trainsers? Nothing? Yes I thought so. The percentages contract of Tyson with Rooney and Cayton gave Tyson the biggest percentage of his earnings in his entire career so Rooney took the least. He is considered a great trainer within boxing and poor trainer by those who base their opinions on heresay and conjecture.
capablemachine 7 months ago
@capablemachine wrong nobody gets as much as rooney did to train tyson and cayton also took to much. they were ripping off tyson even before don king did. they were taking half his salary. he is considered good by the people who are into the fairytale of boxing. but not within boxing circles thats why he doesnt get offers
kingzula 7 months ago
@kingzula Cayton and Jacobs took 30 percent which is 15 percent per person and covered all of Mike's costs from hs teen years. Yet again more unsubstantiated heresay and nonsense by someone who thinks chinese whispers on the internet are fact.
capablemachine 7 months ago
@capablemachine cayton took 33% and rooney took 15% which is way to much. no trainer makes today what rooney made back then and that was 25yrs ago. they took to much and neither of them cared any more than don king.. they all ripped him of. all of them !!!!! where did you get your facts??

kingzula 4 months ago
@kingzula There is no proof from the Tyson documentary that they took 33%. Give me a reference to you statements.
MultiGreat1 4 months ago
@MultiGreat1 you didn't answer my question what info do you have on the subject? when tyson sued cayton tyson said that cayton was getting too much of the pie. cayton agreed in a settlement that he would reduce his take to 20% and gave up his power over mike tyson. after that cayton did not make any decisions for tyson but got 20% until his contract expired. fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!! google tyson cayton lawsuit
kingzula 4 months ago
@kingzula and Tyson went on a steep decline after Rooney. Saying that Rooney was a garbage trainer is like saying Tyson was a garbage boxer. Fact is they complimented each other, Rooney knew Mike's style and Mike was brought up to box in that manner so it worked well. Other examples of boxers who could really only be trained by one person include Naseem Hamed, only Brendan Ingle really knew Nas's style, Ricky Hatton, didnt have the intensity once he got rid of Billy Graham. See what I am saying?
joevtr 6 months ago
@joevtr no they all had issues outside the ring that contributed to the decline. tyson had many issues outside the ring that lead to his mental breakdown. i didnt say rooney was garbage just overrated. hatton also had issues outside the ring that lead to his downfall. also no trainer would have helped hatton beat maywheather
kingzula 6 months ago
@nevawrong I agree, He sparred with Lewis at 15/16 and Lewis said he was still in amateur mode and learned it was the pain buisness. He probably was not same from Cus died. But you can see deterioration between Spinks fight and Bruno fight in 88, I don't think he was throwing fast 4 punch combinations, ( Rooney left him) jail, he was doing it for family and not in love with boxing. For me Holyfield headbutted him alot. Which the head movement would have stopped.
SOUPRUN01 8 months ago
@nevawrong exactly
martis33 7 months ago
@nevawrong Well here's Mike Tyson in his prime and he's pretty shit. You really think Cus and Rooney would have let him fight Lewis? No. Lewis was too big and too strong. The truth is, anytime Tyson fought someone good he lost. His prime lasted 2 years so we'll never know if he was great even then as he didn't fight anybody good.
MrBbuds 1 month ago
@MrBbuds Tyson lasted a significant amount of time on both Lennox and Evander, God only knows what an 80s Tyson could pull off, Tysons prime was not 2 years it was within a 5 year period, and even then i believe Tyson wasnt as prime as he could have been, too much shit mentally happening to him in the mid 80s. To say a Tyson from the 90s and 2000s could stand the chance he did with evander and lennox gives a pretty good idea of what his performance could have been during the 80s.
BiggieSmalls11111 4 weeks ago

My opinion.
bandit7498 1 year ago

Of course, he won the fight anyway, but if you look at how Mike knocked the snot out of Smith in the first round, you have to wonder if, on a better night, Mike might have taken him out earlier.
bigdatut 1 year ago
@bigdatut Makes sense that he looks sapped. Atlas claims it's because Mike Tyson is agreeing to a "silent treaty" about not punching on the inside but it's Atlas projecting some more bullshit as usual.

@XionComrade Very intelligent breakdown Xion, thank you. If Bert could have stayed clean and focused, I see that being a great fight. Joe Frazier has said that Bert was the best natural puncher he ever saw. Coming from the great Joe Frazier, that is some statement. Bert just had a comeback fight and won by the way.

tyson=the greatest pontential to be unfulfilled in my opinion,he was his own enemy
1979mirza 1 year ago
Tyson had big shoulders that protected his head, and he had super-fast reflexes. He ducks and comes back up quicker than Smith can punch. Smith, meanwhile, isn't using his long jab to keep Tyson back, and he keeps leaving himself wide open. He has Ali's height, but no the speed.

In tysons prim he was one of the most accurate boxers that have ever lived

Gotta give it to," Bone Crusher" Smith he made tyson Miss ALOT, hasnt really hit Smith that much, Tyson was never an accurate fighter, just powerful as all mighty hell
mr1derful112 1 year ago
@mr1derful112 Never an accurate fighter? hmm. Tyson in his prime was very precise with his punches. If power was all Mike had he'd still be champ. A fighter's punching power never goes away. It was his precision and accuracy that got that power to it's target.
bandit7498 1 year ago

One thing that Liston and Tyson did have in common was that many of their opponents were scared stiff going into their fights. They both had an aura of violence and destruction that was uncommon.
ExplosiveThinMan 2 years ago
@ExplosiveThinMan
I also hear Liston, like Tyson, was a softy for kids. Tyson especially with his time with "special needs people."
Which is funny given how they are perceived while you have other guys that put on an act in front of the cameras and are selfish assholes behind it but are looked at as "nice guys."

"I don't try to intimidate anybody before a fight," Tyson said. "That's nonsense. I intimidate people by hitting them."

I always got the impression that Sonny was alot smarter than he was percieved. He just wasnt educated but he had some wit. Some of the things he said were quite funny.
ExplosiveThinMan 2 years ago
@ExplosiveThinMan
Orangewind 2 years ago
I'll have to go back and check but I think it Liston was mentioned in an interview about this topic.

Sonny did what he needed to do to survive. He was as much sinned against as he was a sinner. The fact that he made anything out of his life pretty incredible.

"Evander Holyfield Rightfully Swings to Mike Tyson's Defense" By Terence Moore
Some great insight from Holyfield on Tyson's situation.
Same basic thing can be said about Liston. They didn't want to give him a chance despite Liston wanting to be like his idol, Joe Louis.

But with Tyson at least, he was liked at the start and he blew it. With Liston, maybe the Mob thing and other vices (which all people have lincluding Louis) wasn't such a good thing.

your right,a prime ali would have gave mike problems. your right foreman did hit hard, but foreman was just too slow for a "in his prime tyson"ali beat guys with his mouth first..he talked them outta there game in the press confrence.ali was actually afraid of foreman and liston...but got in their heads before the fight.i truely belive a young mike tysons power, speed, head movement, and FEROSITY,would have gave all the greats of the past..some serious problems.
1taekwondojunkie 2 years ago
tyson was taken the distance by quick tillis- who was basically a poor imitation of ali, but tillis gave him trouble- imagine what a prime ali wouldve done?
was als taken the distance by mitch green, smith, tucker, & ruddock- all lesser fighters than ali- so theres no reason to think ali couldnt last the distance with tyson.. ali beat better fighters than tyson ever beat, he proved the doubters wrong time & time again, thats why ali is the greatest, & thats why tyson falls short
SourBoiTV 2 years ago
all of the handlers other than cus,and andy ronney is what make tyson act that way.and don king aint no help either.if tyson could have had cus his whole career..he would have been the hella great.PRINCEDOZA..i just found out??? fucker im forty y/o..iv been around to see these fights for years.AIL mouth won all his fights combined with great skill...also what made him the greatest..he stood up for our rights!.TYSON=WAS JUST A FUCKIN BEAST.if frazier hurt ali with that hook, imagine TYSONS.
1taekwondojunkie 2 years ago
remember that foreman hits at least as hard as tyson, if not harder- & so did liston!

1taekwondojunkie 2 years ago
ALI=was easy to hit,FOREMAN=was VERY slow,LISTON=no boxing talent,FRAZIER=could not stand up to a tyson punch.(watch the foreman/frazier bout)..HOLMES=prolly would have had a chance.(lighting fast jab)if tyson gave him a chance to jab that is.if it took foreman three times to put frazier down..what you think TYSON would have done to him?tysons puches were more accurate and more devastating than foremans ever was.foreman didnt have hooks like tyson,.killer uppercutts..constant movement.THINK.
1taekwondojunkie 2 years ago
Torus21 2 years ago
lol yea liston was a pure "bum"...i have to agree with one thing..foreman prolly would have gave tyson problems with the looooong jab.but he was seriously too slow for a young mike tyson.

Tyson was too mentally weak for any great fighter. See also his fight with Holyfield
johntvette 2 years ago
@johntvette ur right, he had great ability, but his mental weakness wouldve been exposed sooner or later- cus or no cus
tyson was only good against guys he could intimidate
SourBoiTV 2 years ago
Except he didn't intimidate every opponent that he beat.
And how would Tyson "intimidate" his opponent?
How did the smaller, 5'10, 215 pound, short reach Mike Tyson...who tended to have less experience than his opponent..."intimidate" them?
Orangewind 2 years ago
Mentally weak at that time....which was after a 3 year stint in Prison and after all the other b.s. in his life before it. But it is arguable where his mental strength was at the time of his winning the title on through his unifying the title. But there was something to say about his overall mental strength since he made poor choices and was a person that was taken advantage of.
Although the same can be said about Ali and many others as well. Maybe not in the ring with Ali but overall.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Liston had a power jab that knocked guys teeth out. That set up his titanic uppercut that Tyson was made to order for.
If you were going to build a boxer to destroy Tyson you couldnt do better than Liston.
ExplosiveThinMan 2 years ago
liston was a joke..did you forget the head and body movement of tyson?..liston would have never hit tyson with a jab..he would have had to walk thru a bobbing and weaving tyson.(peek a boo) style. ultimatly gettin his dumb ass knocked out!
1taekwondojunkie 2 years ago
Liston was a joke?
Tyson`s headmovement and workrate diminished when he started getting tagged and hurt. Liston would certainly land his jab and that would set Mike up for those uppercuts and hooks.
Tyson would not want to come forward after Sonny started jolting him but it would be a matter of time because Tyson cant fight but one way.

Uppercut? how many could actually continually land on Tyson?
At his peak, Tyson was good at timing punches...so even if he was hit once with it...he would watch out for it again.
Even after Tyson's defense and ability started to lack...he took massive shots from the Bigger Razor Ruddock.

Its just a bad style for Tyson.

@ExplosiveThinMan
Orangewind 2 years ago
I forget which person mentioned it but he said the most incredible part of Tyson's speed was something many don't point out...and fighters don't have quite like him...which is the ability to instantly react. Now of course, that's part "born talent' but a lot has to do with training that born talent which means if you don't train it, it goes hidden...which again, we saw with Tyson at different points in his career. Tyson made faster guys (with their jab) miss when he trained for it
Orangewind 2 years ago
...which again...shows the importance of training the correct way.

He took a helluva punch as well.

whos the best fighter tyson ever beat?
holmes, perhaps?
tysons not as good as hes made out to be
Robstailey 2 years ago
True.
ExplosiveThinMan 2 years ago
@Robstailey: holmes, spinks (at the time, many ppl thought spinks would put an end to tyson), Ruddock, etc. Tyson is regarded highly not because of the fighters he has beaten, but rather because of the manner in which he beat them (tyson knocked out many of them in a brutal fashion usually in the early rounds).
Torus21 2 years ago
any decent fighter can run out there swinging and KO a bunch of saps. it takes a champion to stay in the ring with another great boxer for 15 rounds
Robstailey 2 years ago
ummm. no he can't. usually the boxer who runs out swinging is the one that ends up getting knocked out. Tyson never came out swinging haphazardly. he was meticulous and very technical in his agressiveness.
Personally, I don't think Tyson is the best heavyweight boxer of all time. but he definitely is in the top 10.

Tyson`s great defense is more or less a myth. He look spectacular pounding on Willie Falldown and Kenny Getup.
Whenever he had to dig deep he got his butt whipped.
Now I get to read about how he was past his prime at 23.
ExplosiveThinMan 2 years ago
painfully elementary analysis. You are one of those frankly depressing individuals who are unable, inexplicably, to recognise that Tyson at his best was a great fighter.
espanolporaplicacion 2 years ago
Yes. I have to deal with what was real. Not fictional.
ExplosiveThinMan 2 years ago
@explosive: he got his butt whooped? how? tyson had 6 losses in his career. three of which were to legendary heavies: Holyfield (twice) and Lewis. The douglass fight was tyson's fault (overconfidence). and the mcbride and williams fights were more or less done for money (he quit the mcbride fight and got his knee blown out in the williams bout).
Mike Tyson is far from the best heavyweight in the world (imo he's #11). but to say that his defense was a myth is ludicrous.
Torus21 2 years ago
Past his peak after the Spinks fight. Something that many in the field from Writers, Trainers, and Fighters have all mentioned the difference. It comes down to choices he made...choices that changed his mind-set and ability as a fighter because he didn't properly train the right way anymore.
Boxing is something you have to continue to work at...to not only keep at the level you are fighting at but to also improve on it. Tyson failed to do both after Spinks which was the real exposing.

I agree.

@EmoKiddIsEmo
Foreman`s hands in this younger years were not really slow. He had most his power down low in those uppercuts. That was his wheelhouse. Tyson would be right down there in the eye of the storm.
He also had a big jab that would jolt Mike down to his heels. Then he poured in those uppercuts.
ExplosiveThinMan 2 years ago
Had George Foreman fought Tyson back in the 90s, I believe Tyson may have won. As much as i hate to say it, at that point Big George had lost much of his speed. However, a prime Foreman would've gutted Mike 9 times outta 10.
Torus21 2 years ago
man,you are seriously out of your mind..its just safe to say you dont like tyson.a young and at the top of his game MIKE TYSON..would have killed SONNY LISTON..ALI, FOREMAN,FRAZIER,NORTON,LARRY HOLMES.all of em..them guys were great fighters.however even them all in their prime could not even begin to know how to deal with a heavy weight with such SPEED and POWER...not to mention FEROSITY.tyson= the most dangerous fighter to ever have lived.
1taekwondojunkie 2 years ago
wtf? calm down bro.
