Hello marty, fascinating story I,ve had a guitar now for at least 20 years and am still not even an average player, but watching your lessons does inspire me to try a little harder as we all know that practice makes you improve and i am lazy. I love watching people play together like tommy emanuel and richard smith or tommy and frank vignola, not that i will ever be that good but thanks for the inspiration.
My family ain't too musical either. I got a guitar for X-mas after wanting one for several years. I've been playin' for a couple of days and I'm addicted. With Marty'z videos I've already learned Smoke on the Water, Eye of the Tiger, Iron Man, etc. All I can say is thanks Marty!

If you had to guess, how many hours per day have you averaged practicing since 1995? I mean average. Some days zero, some days 7 hours. 3 hours a day? 1 hour a day? 7 hours a day?
Marty rules and I suck. We are the same age. I, too, was a senior in high school in 1993. I started college in the fall of 1993, aged 18. There were a few other guys in the dorms who played guitar very well. I wanted to try it, but I concluded I was "too old" (at age 18) because they already knew how to play (they'd probably been playing a few years). LOL. I suck. I could have been playing 19 years now too. : ( Now I'm learning (since age 35) but I'll have arthritus soon.

Its about how much better you will be six months from now compared to today! Never compare your progress to someone else. Its all about how YOU have improved over time with practice!! Your so right about the books and lessons if they're are not interesting and fun. I think you have the best approach to teaching I've seen and it has made me pick up my guitar again. Hello marty, fascinating story I,ve had a guitar now for at least 20 years and am still not even an average player, but watching your lessons does inspire me to try a little harder as we all know that practice makes you improve and i am lazy. I love watching people play together like tommy emanuel and richard smith or tommy and frank vignola, not that i will ever be that good but thanks for the inspiration.

My family ain't too musical either. I got a guitar for X-mas after wanting one for several years. I've been playin' for a couple of days and I'm addicted. With Marty'z videos I've already learned Smoke on the Water, Eye of the Tiger, Iron Man, etc. All I can say is thanks Marty!

If you had to guess, how many hours per day have you averaged practicing since 1995? I mean average. Some days zero, some days 7 hours. 3 hours a day? 1 hour a day? 7 hours a day?

Marty rules and I suck. We are the same age. I, too, was a senior in high school in 1993. I started college in the fall of 1993, aged 18. There were a few other guys in the dorms who played guitar very well. I wanted to try it, but I concluded I was "too old" (at age 18) because they already knew how to play (they'd probably been playing a few years). LOL. I suck. I could have been playing 19 years now too. : ( Now I'm learning (since age 35) but I'll have arthritus soon.

@SkirtSoPlain NO! You should be thinking "I'll be playing much better soon" instead of your comment that admits defeat! Its not about how much better you are compared to someone else. Its about how much better you will be six months from now compared to today! Never compare your progress to someone else. Its all about how YOU have improved over time with practice!! Who cares if someone else is better than you??? What can YOU play today that you couldn't two months ago!!

This video is pretty good, because there are people, like me, who think they will never play guitar very well, because they didn't born with a special ability to play guitar and they started playing guitar too late. But when you see someone who can play guitar saying things like that, it make you believe in yourself.

honestly marty, you're the type of musician that i wanna be friends with. you're not some stuck up seeming guy. who's like dude you suck, give it up. i can relate to your stories. made me feel that much more inspired to learn. and to be quite frank...you're my main teacher. 7 months ago i picked up a guitar and when with my friends, i wished i could jam and be potential. now i can jam and have good memories (especially at parties). Im not great...but i know with time and practice...ill get there

Your so right about the books and lessons if they're are not interesting and fun. I think you have the best approach to teaching I've seen and it has made me pick up my guitar again. My son (6) has now asked Santa for an electric guitar for Xmas and we will be following you closely. A really big thanks from us.

There's nothing i love more than guitar but has there ever been a point when u r learning when you just aren't that eager on it but only for a couple hours? Is that normal?I'm not like that now but i am sometimes.
