This is beautifully sung, but clearly her voice is in its decline in this recording. I have heard Schwarzkopf sing this piece flawlessly-- in the Viennese style.
Please, don't listen to Bajazet, who is a famous french music fan using any ways he can to pollute the Internet with Anti-Schwarzkopf feelings. Let him this argue alone, and say horrible things like when this immense and irrepleceable lady died in August 2006.
Of course this document is not the most obvious of Schwarzkopf's art of Lied singing, and for sure the voice sounds tired, but this is her last audio. The real last recital, which was not recorded, happened in 1979, in Zurich.
Thx "Yanbsn" for your sensible comment. Yes when artists get old, their voice is gone (at least compared to what it had been), and what crowds applause and cheer is less a performance than a souvenir. And thanks as well to "masacian" for this wonderful souvenir. BTW this old woman (61 then) is still charming... and would live another 30!

i don't like anything she was singing :-) If she is considered a real master in German Lied, I wander why a so bad pronunciation and a so bad taste in singing a so linear and olympic Lied. Better forgetting her.
It is a tad prosaic but I hope not rude. How could that which your mother and father give you au natur be rude?? And thanks for taking the high-minded view; it becomes you - as it becomes me not to be rude....deliberately....or at all...
Is it possible to still get this recital anywhere? So many things of hers I didn't know were out there! Hard to judge her 'start' here Fich, with the quality of the recording. Heck, she was in her 60s in this...
Early on Dame Elizabeth made a point of never singing men's song, but Seligkiet apparently was always the exception to her rule. And why not? She sings it beautifully, the voice is firm and true and not a hint of wobble. And the interpretation: charming.
Glenmed- Do you know anything about "belcanto" (sp?) that you might post some recordings of other singers that sing in this style? Apparently, Schwarzkopf's style is somewhat now disused. Too bad for the world...
teilweise kann man kaum ein wort verstehen. schrecklich maniriert. wo bleibt die künstlerische natürlichkeit.

When some of the voice is "gone" then you have the most beautiful musical intents and colorations which is in full here. Thank you !

This is the Farewell recital in Amsterdam, not in 1976, as you say, but february 8, 1977. It seems incredible, but the hall was not sold out.

God does not give away voices. He hasn't any to give. But you could try your mother and your father.

Ist nicht diese "Seligkeit" der Triumph des Lebens über den Tod? Ist nicht diese einzigartige Stimme der Beweis?
