With so many different ways to time travel, Spock just accepts that Vulcan is destroyed and that is that. This is a major hole in the story. It's like, why don't you just sling shot around the sun, like in Star Trek 3 and stop all this from happening. Also, it is well established that in the 2900 there will be a time line police set up by star fleet. Their is no way in Hell they would let some dude go back in time and destroy VULCAN. IT MAKES NO SINCE!!!!
The movie is VERY flawed, but still enjoyable. I saw it when I was a very new fan, and before I'd even seen the original TV series, but I still saw lots of flaws.
The best part was the (SPOILER) appearance of our favorite Vulcan ever. <3 (END SPOILER)
Overall, it's more of a good sci-fi movie than a good Star Trek movie.
For any who want to know more fully what I'm talking about, ask me via message, and I'll send a reply.
Being a Star Trek fan, I thought that this Film was Gold! It had everything needed to attract a world wide Audience AND Star Trek fans. I found the story/script to be very entertaining and the special features and cinematic look to the film made my eye stay on the screen. Also I'm very happy of the choice of Actors. I'de never seen Zak Quinto on anything other than Heroes (great tv show by the way) and he's rised my opinion of his acting. Great Film!!
I don't consider myself 'hardcore' but I enjoyed most of most of the Star Trek stories up to this point, and found the consistency of theme and mood within them a major component to their enjoyabliity. In most 'reboot' attempts that I have encountered in the past I have found profound disappointment.
With that said, I found this addition to the storyline to be both intriguing and entertaining. If there is one problem it was Spock was so well portrayed, that it left Kirk looking a bit bland.
I'm a HARDCORE STAR TREK fan and I can say that this movie made me cry.. in a very good way. The USS Kelvin scene made me cry like a baby. I'm sure when i get the DVD on November 17th I'll still cry. Overall I loved this movie and oh btw I've been a Trekkie for over 15 years.
If there is anything wrong with this movie, please tell me, I missed it. I saw nearly no flaws, maybe some little thing here and there. I'm not a big fan of the pairing that occurred, but that was IT. I am so overjoyed, I can't wait to reserve a DVD!
this my sound weird but im younger than 20 and i love Star trek! ive watched all my life! i love TOS and this movie ROX!! i have watched all TOS episodes and most of TNG! so im obsessed!
I liked it but its completely AU. I'll never accept it as cannon but that doesn't stop me from giving it credit for being one of the best movies i've seen in years top 5 at least minus HP movies.

well to be honest with you, jj has fucked up star trek. He has changed the time line this changes star trek altogether which is a stupid thing to do. He has done this to suit his needs of an unimaganitive director. He has tried to reboot the franchise and in my opinion failed. for the next film we need new director with more imagination and also new writers. JJ HAS BASICALLY TOOK EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT STAR TREK RAPED IT AND PUT IT IN A BOX TO DIE. SORRY FOR MY GRAMMAR
He didn't f*** Star Trek up Mr. Dictionary, he just did it differenly. Just because it doesn't have lame humour, terrible stories of The Original and Next Generation doesn't mean it's a bad movie. I agree that it could have been more intellectual like Deep Space Nine and Voyager, but it was still a highly enjoyable movie experience.
I'm a long time fan from watching TNG when I was a teenager to the following series', this film doesn't destroy anything in the original, it merely puts the new films inot a different time line. The old trek is still valid and it's not like time travel and parallel realities have never been used before in Trek, it's been done many times. I presonally loved the movie and thinks it's the kick in the ass it needed to move trek back into the mainstream after the last few series made it too fan based
I am not a Star Trek fan. I watched a few of the Next Generations and Deep Space Nine when I was younger but never loved the series. None of the Star Trek shows never intrigued me to be fan (well, 7 of 9 from Voyager caught for a moment).
Establishing I am not a Trekie. I wasn't planning to watch this movie until a few friends convince me to watch it and.....
wow the new star trek blew me away from the word go.i got all the films and box sets from the original tv shows plus star trek next genaration.but this one is a got to watch film for old fans and new ones alike action packed good well done to the new actors and looking forward to getting the dvd when it comes out 10 out of 10 just when you thort you had seen it all..live long and prosper..
I liked it, but I did feel that the pure coincidence of what was happening seemed a little out of place, but who am I to complain, I was on the edge of my seat when Captain Kirk from the original series fought a rubber dinosaur man. Gotta love weed, and this Movie.
All I can say is this is the Star Trek epic film I've been waiting for. This is one is more than worthy of being called the best of the series by far. JJ Abrams has just raised the bar - I hope that he's able to do a sequel on the scale of the Dark Knight.
My mother has been a ST fan since the beginning and our family has grown up with the different versions in our house. We all loved it. I've only seen my mom cry at two other movies, this was the third. I loved every minute of it. I really cant wait to see it again, and I'm praying that JJ continues this series, cause these characters are too good to leave to just one movie.

"A big convoluted mess, made only to appeal to broad audiences." You hit the nail on the head. I can't believe this movie gets 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, I can't believe how poor popular taste has become. Even if Star Trek had never existed prior to this movie, I'd still say it was a shallow mess. It's a 2-hour carnival ride with cliche situations and writing. Abrams is a hack, he should have stuck to Lost. This movie is a shallow parody of Star Trek, a slap in the face to Gene Roddenberry.
Hate to say it, but I have to agree. The film looks good (except for the strange low tech engineering level), the actors fit well as the classic characters.
But yes, the story simply made NO SENSE, there were way too many coincidences and plot holes (filled with red matter).
And overall I got the sense of watching a Saturday morning cartoon (not the Trek one). The "enemy" and his Armani wearing crew were just typical blue meanies out for revenge.
I totally disagree. J.J Abrams pulled stories out of all the ST canon to make this work. The Spock- Romulan ambassador line came directly from Next Generation. The bad guys looked like something from Next Gen too. The actors playing the characters did so with varying degrees of success, but it was nice to see the old characters dusted off and brought back into the spotlight again. They are from a time when acting was theatrical, and writing was prized and not politicized.
I have been a Star Trek fan all my life, watched the original series when it first came out in the 60's. Also saw the other movies and series. I can truly say that the 2009 version is a great representation and tribute to the spirit of Star Trek. Wimpy note: No film has ever made me cry at the beginning, middle and end. I'm so glad my kids came along to watch it with me, they loved it, too. I loved every bit of it! Can't wait to get the Blu-Ray and see the sequels!
As far from what I can tell, Trekkies and people who are new or casual fans of the Star Trek series seemed to have enjoyed the new film. I've seen it twice already and at the beginning of the credits, in both theaters, the audience broke into extremely euphoric clapping. Pure give aways that this movie is well liked.
To all who enjoyed this film, Live long and Prosper.

The plot was average at best. Basically the director said "I am not going to have the gonads to make my own space opera with my own ideas, so I am going to take this Star Trek label I know I can make money with, bastardize it with timeline hocus pocus, violating Trek history and basic science, and voila I have something to make a soulless profit for the summer" . The movie is mostly fluff. Wait till the DVD or TV & save your money kiddies.

Just a little tid bit, but the movie is both a sequel and a prequel. Since both Old Spock and the Romulans are from the future and they are part of the original time line.

Storyline was great. Why? Because it does two things.
1: It comes up with a new storyline that does rejuvinate the franchise.
2: It come up with a new storyline that does not change anything for the lovers of the old.
They are two wholly different and coexisting time lines. Good stuff.

In my life only two sci-fi films have affected me so much that I can still remember where I sat.
2001 -A Space Oddysey. Back in the 60s. Psychedelic or what? I still don't know what it was all about. I still wonder to this day.
Star Wars, in 1977. The cinema shook as those spaceships flew overhead. I was dumbstruck. It was a whole new galaxy come to life.
And now -Star Trek. While James T. Kirk is born, his father saves 800 lives. I am in awe of this film. It is truly, utterly fantastic.
