this is in no way air tight lol, i made sure the holes fir the intake and return were big enough to allow air

Man spend the money on a proper overflow. I paid like $50 for the overflow and it can start the syhpon after a power failure. The first time your power goes out you are gonna find water all over the place when the pump pumps all the water out of the sump.....

i wont have an overflow problem, ive got the water levels set to where the siphon dies before the sump overflows, and if the power comes back on it will not overflow the tank. ive already tested it :)

not sure what happened to my question but I'll post again. What is the purpose of an overflow box? Can't I just put a hose (with a screen over the end so fish dont get suucked into the hose) right into the aquarium sucking wateer down into the sump? Im researching on how to make a sump and I dont understand the NEED for an overflow. Thanks.

i am researching on making a sump for my 55 gallon saltwater tank, my question if anybody can answer is: why do I need an overflow? Can't I secure the hose to the tank and have it suck water right out of the tank into the sump? I could just put a screen over the hose so fish and etc don't get sucked into the hose. I don't understand WHY an overflow is needed. Thanks.

How do you get the water flowing into the inlet pipe in the first place? I mean, I know that the pump in the big plastic box pumps the clean water back into the tank, but how do you get the water moving in the first place?

What happen if you power run out...of course your siphon is going to stop? and when the power turns back on the pump would be running again which will return all your water from your sump back into the tank. This will make your pump dry and it might break. Can you explain this to me? i am also doing a DIY sump. Pm me if you want to. =D

You know you can buy an overflow device for about $50.00 online. I hook up my pump to a battery backup device in case the power goes out in addition to the overflow device

I have no mechanical skills whatsoever, so I bought one. Yeah it was a lot of money-but I don't regret having a Sump. I found your video and based on that I got one! I cannot believe how efficient it is-thanks for the outdoor fountain suggestion-I bought one at Lowes for $35.00 and it works QUIET and awesome!!! (I put a small piece of bio sponge beneath the pump as a cushion, which eliminated the whirrrrrrrr sound (probably slight vibration from the acrylic while pump running).

they should last for years, and its probably better then the fish store ones lol, these are designed to be outside running non-stop in extreme weather conditions.

hey I have a 125g,with South Americans cichlids,and is running with an aquaclear filter (125g) and two sponge filters,and I vacuum the gravel on every water change,(once a week),the water is clear and fish are happy, bright colors,and always hungry. my question is,do I need a diy sump? and why? is there any benefits or is more a matter of taste? thank you and keep the good work.

oh yeah, this actually filters alot better then a HOB filter, and it really just depends on what size pump you use, im running abuot 700gph through mine :)

cool. looks pretty easy to make specially since i have a huge powerhed that im not using but i already have a double biowheel and bio rock stuff in my canister dont really want to overdue anything(i no u cant rely overdue bio filtration but i do water changes alot and already have plenty of filtration).
