Wallmart sells an orange wooden-match container with an attached ferrocerium fire-starter (lighter flint) for 97 cents, sporting goods. Use cotton balls with Vasoline squeezed out rather than char cloth as a water resistant tinder, lights: poof!, burns big & long. Stuff that tinder into a plastic straw and melt the ends shut to waterproof it. In wet conditions this tinder is often more valuable than a Bic. A piece lightly fluffed to marble-size burns about 90 seconds, 2-1/2 inches high.
i gotta wonder why folks who "just dont get it" have to hassle folks who can do things they never thought they would need to know/do. great vid man. i want you on my side when all hell breaks loose, and we have to survive this way. by the way, i can make GUNS and CANNONS with less than the average person can :)
I use the spine of my carbon steel Mora knife for this and chert flakes. Works great. Don't try this with a stainless knife it won't work and be sure to use 100% cotton to make char cloth.
@PK102260 Looks like a good way of starting the fire,if there was some details to the materials and what kind of prep was there to getting the materials, will this work on a windy day?A good start, keep up the work.
It's not a chicken\egg thing at all. It's a: if you're going to have the tools and foresight to make and carry char cloth, carry a carbon steel blade, and look all over the ground (past 1000 pieces of wood) to find a stone that will spark; why not just plan on carrying a lighter in the first place thing. Just an assumption though.
@none3973 Lighters run out of fuel, and if things are truly dire, like absolute worst case scenario as in the very collapse of society, you need to not only have several methods of starting a fire at your disposal, but know what else you can come up with to build a fire should your materials go missing for whatever reason.
You only start fire with char cloth. If you think to carry char cloth, you should put a lighter in with it. that way you don't have to waste your char cloth.
@LivingHistorySchool You are a god amongst men. I just bought a Gerber Survival knife that came with a ferrocium fire striker, and even with that I'm not sure I could start a fire as quickly as you did. I probably can't start a fire without a bic...
Piece of quartz or feldspar works, too, eh! You make it look so easy! I have used up so much newspaper and other paper garbage to start the fire in my tipis! Trees worth! I'm going to have to try this. I made some charcloth which I haven't tried to use yet. Thanks for the inspiration.
i have seen this method. i do regular magnesium stick and use sparks to ignite the old mans beard in my vids. i have seen instead of char cloth to use a peice of a mushroom that is specific to ignite when dried out too. i do water filtering and fire starting and stuff in my vids too. where you in oregon? obviously i am mt hood. i used to live in corvallis

you can start a fire with a rock called marcacite but it is found in Europe in a cobble form or you can use pyrite (fools gold) but generally that is too soft and for cloth you can use chagha fungus ...the ice man name otzi 5,000 years old carried these materials with him...i tried to locate a cobble of marcacite but was unsuccessful
