  • its not just with a knife if you got flint

  • carry a magnesium bar and a knife, really easy to make a fire. :P

  • AMAZING!!!

  • Looks like he was sparkin a big ol' spliff in the thumbnail.

  • with just a pocket knife? and then 3 other items

  • How bout renaming your vid to something more accurate, like Starting fire w pocket knife AND....?

  • my mom walked in and thought that you were teaching me how to smoke

  • Excellent video, and thanks for sharing it.

  • whats quartz? is it those decoration rocks you can get for you lawn or rocks your going to have to look for underground.

  • Wallmart sells an orange wooden-match container with an attached ferrocerium fire-starter (lighter flint) for 97 cents, sporting goods. Use cotton balls with Vasoline squeezed out rather than char cloth as a water resistant tinder, lights: poof!, burns big & long. Stuff that tinder into a plastic straw and melt the ends shut to waterproof it. In wet conditions this tinder is often more valuable than a Bic. A piece lightly fluffed to marble-size burns about 90 seconds, 2-1/2 inches high.

  • i gotta wonder why folks who "just dont get it" have to hassle folks who can do things they never thought they would need to know/do. great vid man. i want you on my side when all hell breaks loose, and we have to survive this way. by the way, i can make GUNS and CANNONS with less than the average person can :)

  • Works great with my Mercator K55K, carbon steel version of course!

  • I use the spine of my carbon steel Mora knife for this and chert flakes. Works great. Don't try this with a stainless knife it won't work and be sure to use 100% cotton to make char cloth.

  • What is the best thing to use for the kindle bundle?

  • Thanks,This is pretty epic,Now i can show off when me and my friends go camping!

  • Great little vid but why don't you show a little more detail. What's the quarts look like or how is it shaped.

  • @PK102260 any type of quartz works

  • @PK102260 Looks like a good way of starting the fire,if there was some details to the materials and what kind of prep was there to getting the materials, will this work on a windy day?A good start, keep up the work.

  • Flint, steel and tinder (fuel).

Bic lighter = flint, steel and fuel.

  • To get a charred cloth, you gotta have fire, right?...

  • @Parkinson9999 yes...is this the chicken and egg thing?

  • @LivingHistorySchool for more information on charcloth look up how tmo make char cloth by kipkay

  • @LivingHistorySchool

It's not a chicken\egg thing at all. It's a: if you're going to have the tools and foresight to make and carry char cloth, carry a carbon steel blade, and look all over the ground (past 1000 pieces of wood) to find a stone that will spark; why not just plan on carrying a lighter in the first place thing. Just an assumption though.

  • @none3973 you should always carry at least two ways to start a fire

  • @none3973 Lighters run out of fuel, and if things are truly dire, like absolute worst case scenario as in the very collapse of society, you need to not only have several methods of starting a fire at your disposal, but know what else you can come up with to build a fire should your materials go missing for whatever reason.

  • @LivingHistorySchool

You only start fire with char cloth. If you think to carry char cloth, you should put a lighter in with it. that way you don't have to waste your char cloth.

  • I don't understand what you mean by "charred cloth"... is that the tinder?

  • @sundowner74 check out my video on how to make charred cloth

  • You should change the title to more accurately represent that you NEED flint or another type of spark produceing rock or this method will not work.

  • Nice! :D thx now i know!

  • VERY Cool video. Hey, do you have a wilderness survival guide website I could watch? Thanks!

  • @passion8leader no, just click on my channel and subscribe for other videos, what are you most interested in?

  • How many takes did you do before you got it that quick?

  • @mrhnm one... I do this everyday...and this was my first You Tube video

  • @LivingHistorySchool You are a god amongst men. I just bought a Gerber Survival knife that came with a ferrocium fire striker, and even with that I'm not sure I could start a fire as quickly as you did. I probably can't start a fire without a bic...

  • @mrhnm it's just practice

  • @LivingHistorySchool I'll probably go out soon and try it out but most of the woods out here are closed because of the fire danger. I live in NM.

  • @LivingHistorySchool that was awesome !

  • @mrhnm one..this is my first You Tube video

  • subed. LUVBUG

  • nicely done.

  • If you gotta carry a char cloth you might as well carry a bic.......

  • @RagnarOdinsson if you carry a bic you might as well carry a flame thrower

  • @LivingHistorySchool I know I know, I see your point, I was just clowing.

  • @LivingHistorySchool what kinda rock does it have to be?

  • @LivingHistorySchool the two items are hardly comparable.

  • @LivingHistorySchool hahahaha

  • @LivingHistorySchool if you carry charred cloth you might as well carry a bic

  • how to light a fire : take a piece of wood then pour it with gas then light it

  • Very interesting. So where do you get jasper or quartz?

  • @LoyaltotheUSA any creek with a rock bar

  • If you did not have the charred cloth could you try to catch the spark directly on the tinder?

  • Walnut cotton and sticks.

  • I LIKE THAT YOU USE A SMALL TINDER BUNDLE AS I DO. CONSERVATION OF MATERIALS. Thanks, Good Vid.

  • @HikerJohn316 Thanks John

  • Good Video.

  • Hello people, nice video. Thanks for posting on youtube! Please check out my channel. Ithink you'll find interesting and fun. Kind regards, Bushman

  • SO YOU CAN'T USE ANY ROCK...CORRECT?

  • @spinosmen see previous comments, quartz type rocks

  • cool

  • When some1 lights a fire with matchs its boring but when they do it with a rock and a knife, its like magic! : D

  • @HomeMadeGunNut Thanks

  • brill thnx :)

  • i live in indiana and i dont think we have flint here do we?

  • @cameronspawn

    you have quartz

  • Wow, really impressive! Thanks!

  • @updrafttower

    your welcome

  • "Just using a back of a pocket knife, and piece of flint."

Oh yeah, and a piece of char cloth. I like that the char cloth is an afterthought, considering that's the only reason this fire got lit.

  • @phychmasher

you can use tinder fungus too

  • i feel like i need to know my basic wilderness rock geology now

  • Piece of quartz or feldspar works, too, eh! You make it look so easy! I have used up so much newspaper and other paper garbage to start the fire in my tipis! Trees worth! I'm going to have to try this. I made some charcloth which I haven't tried to use yet. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • great job. do you knapp?

  • only thing is that it has to be a carbon steel blade. other metals wont work.

  • @firebug0001

yes a cheap one from Pakistan

  • is that a regular rock or a peice of flint

  • @hesamonster

you can use any rock that is of a CCS=crypto-crystalline silicate

an example of this type of rock would be quartz or jasper

  • i have seen this method. i do regular magnesium stick and use sparks to ignite the old mans beard in my vids. i have seen instead of char cloth to use a peice of a mushroom that is specific to ignite when dried out too. i do water filtering and fire starting and stuff in my vids too. where you in oregon? obviously i am mt hood. i used to live in corvallis

  • @MOUNTAINOUS

    Springfield

  • Less than 2 min great!

  • nicely done

  • @badphobar

Thanks!, this was my first video!

  • Thats pretty kewl. Its a good type for someone going camping.

Lord Jesus Christ loves and saves. ;)

  • @RebekahC1987

Thanks Rebekah, glad to see you are learning Dene'

  • @LivingHistorySchool ahe' hee thank you :) I love these videos. When my duaghter gets older I'll have to remember this when we go camping. Alsome. :)

  • damn. He's good. I have played in the bush many times. Never that easily. 5 star material.

  • I believe this only works with a Carbon steel knife not with a stainless knife (most common). Also charcloth does not grow on trees or something

  • @gimepepe

right I got a cheap carbon steel knife for 5 bucks

  • I am sorry I was a bit blunt.

I just try to prevent that people in a survival situation will waste calories and time trying to make fire like this with their victorinox.

That is why it is essential to mention it will only work with cabron steel.

I love the effort and experience you put into your video's btw

  • @gimepepe

no problem, I use flint and steel in demos more for the historical aspect not the survival aspect

  • @LivingHistorySchool

  • Great stuff!!! Can't wait to catch up on your vids. Check out my bushcraft pocket fisherman video on my site and let me know what you think. THX and have a great day.

  • @casuallytactical

Are you the guy from the canteen shop? or did you just favorite his video?

I would like to see this up close. I have the 1970's Ronco pocket fisherman!

  • @LivingHistorySchool I am that guy!

  • Nice video and simple but very important lesson.

  • WHY NOT A SERIES ON "Wilderness Survival "

  • @24602400

    check out my other videos

  • nice

  • broken files during the fur trade were made into all kinds of things including strikers

  • broken file also works

  • broken file also works

  • broken file works also

  • umm what if u dont have carbon cloth?

  • I am going to try this today, it is a nice sunny day... Thanks for sharing and all the advice!

  • Very cool! do you have a video on finding those types of rocks? I will look around your channel just in case... Love your video's! Thanks for sharing!

  • quartz rock work well its the white ones, if that helps

  • kinda white when they are dry and kinda crystal looking when they are wet... I can google it thanks!

  • yes, break an edge off so its sharp, find an old file grind down the edge, make some char cloth (see video) buy some jute twine and you have a fire starting kit

  • jute twine? You can get a bailing roll of it for like $25 at the farm store... thousands of feet... this is gonna be cool thanks for the info... oh, and we have those rocks sitting on the window by the sink... shhheeessshhh who woulda have thunk...

and I think I still have a roll of the twine.

  • I expect to see a video response with your fire kit my friend,

    have a great weekend!

  • @LivingHistorySchool

    I posted my current one...

It is in the update phase I hope to make it more natural... Did you know if you are pruning a fir limb and leave it a foot or so in length the first year and then remove it that it will create a pitch filled limb?

I first noticed this on a stump, I have not figured out which season works best to make pitch...

  • is the knife a old timer(brand)?

  • no its a cheap 5 dollar knife with no label probable made in Pakistan, it's great for reenactments

  • @LivingHistorySchool Is the knife carbon steel or stainless or does it even matter? Is one better than the other?

  • @MartyNoir carbon steel

  • Great advice. ( HOW ) do you know if you have a FLINT stone. I guess I would have to study up on rocks to know what flint looks like. Daddy was a welder, and I know HOW the strikers for a torch work, Thank you for the advice.

  • just use an old broken file for your striker and quartz rock, quartz is found just about everywhere

  • WOW! Thanks For Inviting Me 2 C Ur Channel! This Is So Cool And Very Informative...Good To Know These Kinds Of Things!!

  • thanks

  • Skvělý ani lukem nemám plamen tak rychle díky. Co to bylo za kámen? Dokážeš to i kamenem křemenem? Troud byl z přepáleného plátna? Lze jít do lesa a najít nějakou alternativu, kterou zapálíš oheň? Jak zapálit oheň křesáním dvvěma kameny? V naší lokalitě mám v dosahu, vápenec, buližník, křemen, křemenec. Díky předem za opověď. Dávám 5/5

  • hey< awesome channel

  • I 5 starred because it's a very well done quick tip. Subscribed.

  • I fail to see why you did not use a proper striker and a tinderbox, and why charred cloth instead of natural tinders?

    Le Loup.

  • I did that under my Mt. Man HBC video...check that video out...

  • Great stuff. Amazing that humans have to be taught this basic skill-- and now we learn by way of computer and internet.

  • ...so true!

  • Like how Your videos get right to the point.

Are You saying that the red or green jasper found in the Clackamas river will throw a spark? I must try this now.

  • yes any rock that is of a CCS=crypto-crystalline silicate will through a spark, just take your fire steel or a piece of an old file and go down to a river and test them out...

  • Can you try to make a fire with a rock? It would be really cool and like no charcloth. Please if you know how to do it would be awesome video.

  • you can start a fire with a rock called marcacite but it is found in Europe in a cobble form or you can use pyrite (fools gold) but generally that is too soft and for cloth you can use chagha fungus ...the ice man name otzi 5,000 years old carried these materials with him...i tried to locate a cobble of marcacite but was unsuccessful

  • This is the clip that made me a subscriber to your channel.

    Keep up the great work.

  • 5-star vid nice to see some else uses a pocket knife

  • cool.

  • Great vid, thats awesome :-)

    *****

  • Damn, he makes it looks so damn easy. LOL

  • I know Reggie, you were in mission mode to get your fire started. I was LOL! I give you credit, you do have the determination when your mind is set on it.
