  • One thing that those in the West who are concerned about gay rights around the world can do is to push for full rights in their own countries to serve as an example to the rest of the world. Here in the United States, only six states and our nation's capital have gay marriage, and those state marriages are not recognized nationally. If we in the West were all to have full equal gay rights, it could serve as a model for many other countries in the world and help inspire their own activists.

  • There is a convergence of bad bad factors going on in Africa: one-party-dominant states looking for scapegoats, a bankrupt pseudo-intellectual class that blames all of its problems on the West, the rise of Islamist and Christian fundamentalism, economic stagnation, massive corruption and so on. Most likely all outsiders can do is to support local African human rights gay groups and to put pressure on by withholding aid when things become too egregious.

  • my own opinion is that if we can accept other type of religious people in our country then by rights they should accept us gay boys/men. for who we are not what they want us to become, I don't like guys going around sleeping with women getting them pregnant without the aid of a condom, i want to kill the assholes who end up leaving them after getting them knocked up. but they don't hear us complaining so no, they should respect us as we respect them...GAYZ RULE!!!

    cool video..

  • @nicksum29: Interesting points...

  • my personal thoughts are that love is love no matter color or gender... love is love.

  • Actually, South Africa is one of the few countries in the world that recognises gay marriage, and where gay rights are actually mentioned in the actual constitution. All of the problems re. homophobia were brought to Africa by Britain and other colonial powers who left the "rich" legacy of their legal codes behind them when they left.

  • @nicksum29 I should have been more specific really, I wasn't referring to south africa which I realise has quite a commendable attitude towards gay rights. The rest of the continent is a rather stark contrast though, from Egypt to Zimbabwe, from Uganda to Botswana, the rest of Africa seems agreed on the fact homosexuality is so despicable it warrants prison time and/or the death penalty. Personally I cannot excuse that attitude on the basis it was all our fault? They have their own minds.

  • @MentalityUK Examine the old Victorian penal codes of Britain, and then compare them to the laws (and punishments) implemented in her ex-colonies. Africa was abandoned by her colonial powers - no reparation paid, not apologies made, and not even financial assistance given by Belgium, France, Portugal, and England. (the chief perpetrators of annexation crimes in Africa). Say what you will, but they are the chief causes. And lets not forget Americas very eager support of the slave trade.

  • OMG it has been SO long since I saw you, what a nice surprise to see you on my sub page! What a great video too! I saw this legislator from Ungana on the tube the other day, who was pushing to have a bill passed there to kill all the gays. What was worse, was there were a few politicians in America who either consulted with them or gave their blessing on it..scary stuff. The UK sounds like a lovely place to live! I would love that. The US still has tons of homophobes but it's getting better

  • @pvampire lol thank you for such a warm welcome back! :) Indeed Uganda is trying to pass a bill to bring in the death penalty of homosexuality...or it already has? Not totally sure.

Yeah the US doesn't have a great reputation, but I think half the problem is the country is so massive, diverse and politically divided it sounds worse than it is sometimes. When I went to NYC there didn't appear to be a problem, but obviously another state is almost like going to another country....
