  • girl u know you wer on point when u said."no watch this will be the best braid out i have ever had....these two braids" I HATE when u put all this effort and product into a style tht turns out to be a FAIL but when u say im just gonna throw it up like so to run out the house it turns out to be the best style ever that and when u play n your hair before bed lol - this wont last thru the morn lol

  • @sincityfunnygyrl What? lol

  • U are soooo beautiful

  • do you live in nyc? do you find that ricky's is more expensive than it should be? for example, more expensive than sally's or drugstores.

  • Your coat is gorg!

  • what's the name of the song in the very beginning lol?

  • Taren you are such a beauty & so fun to watch. I love you video's… I also on my road to hair recovery!

  • whats protective styling?

  • Did the cream work ( did it reverse the heat damage fully)?

  • Have you ever tried, apple cider vinegar to help restore elasticity it works very well for my hair.. :-)?

  • Mizani has a Great Blow Out Video using their Supreme Oil - type Supreme Oil in Action - Coats to Protect from Damage

  • i looooooooove snow. i'm going to miss it :c (

  • u r jus too too cute wit them 2 braids

  • taren you should hav bought the morocan oil from a regular ghetto beauty supply...i bought mine from my local 1 n the bronx for 30 bucks...

  • im new to NY and natural as well....im finding it difficult to figure out things to do with my hair since its kinda in the "in between length" im from the south so im so used to wash and go's do you have any suggestions?

  • can u make a video on how to braid your hair this way. thanks :-)

    Ivette

  • @ivethm80 yes!

  • seriosly i cant understand why you ever used any relaxer.

  • MORROCAN OIL IS AMAZINGGG

i used once after i had straightened my hair, just appiled it to my ends because they were starting to split, it does wonders! glad to see you picked it up!

  • you are very beautiful :)

  • Your cap and JAcket are SUPER CUTE!!!!!!!!!

  • The two french braids are too cute. I took the challenge of no direct hear for a year and 3 months. My hair has never been better and longer. Good luck.

  • Hey Taren, did you know that there was a Ricky's coming or already in Brooklyn, fyi!

  • I would love to see your hair with perm rods or flexi rods. I think that would be so cute!!

  • I found a cheaper Moroccan Oil brand (Organix Pure and Simple)..go see my channel..I also have videos on Hask Placenta("Curly Hair Video Part 1")..its a very intense Hair Protein Treatment...try it!!

  • How do you know when your hair has been damaged by heat? I've had my hair flat ironned a few times this season and when I recently went to get a trim, I noticed that afterwards my hair (in it's natural) state still had really "tangled" ends. Deep conditioning helped since it's been really dry as well.

  • @myzzio Ummm... To block the wind

  • @taren916 lol! love this

  • @myzzio we had a blizzard in ny...snow....wind...crazzzzy mountains of snow...lol ..taren went to the beauty store and i was at work honey..in ny we keep it movin rain or snow...lol

  • @parrisj21 loool. Yeah it snows like crazy here in Ottawa Canada too but so far the weather has been tame (*knock on wood). We don't use umbrellas here when it snows tho, we just cover our heads when our jacket hoodies, thats why I was asking.

  • @myzzio Ottawa is my home town. :) I used to go to Nepean High.

  • @myzzio Lol, I'm in Toronto, Canada, and once in my entire life did I bring out an umbrella in a snowstorm, and I felt like I was committing some kind of blasphemy!

  • @GwendolynRaine lool

  • I don't know if you've tried the line before, but Elucence's Moisture Balancing Conditioner is my staple. I also like their Extended Moisture Repair Treatment (don't like the name fool you, it's actually a light/medium protein and not has "risky" to use as the Aphogee and also more natural). Try out the Elucence's line!

  • That braid out was nice :)

  • Not at all crazy...just shows your dedication to nursing your hair back to health. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Cheering you on!

  • Good luck on nursing your hair back to health and thank GOD I live in florida. Its cold but not snowing. Happy Holidays!!!!

  • beauty supply shopping in the snow = dedication i love it best of luck im sure you will be able to whip your hair back into shape. No heat and lots of conditioning treatments should do the trick :)

  • Amla, brahmi and maka powders mixed with water. The best, the cheapest, $1.99 a box.

  • @mommyanme Where do you find the amla, brahmi, and maka powders?

  • @justlovingme Happy new year, been away! I just happen to have an international store near and I get it from them, the owners are Indian, they are Hesh powders. Most people say they get it from an Indian store, careful with Ebay and Amazon, they are $ 7.99 a box but if you don't have a store nearby guess you have little choice.

  • you should do the Moptop Maven healthy hair challenge! it's on her blog and right on time for what you are going thru. lots of helpful info. good luck!

  • You are working really HARD to bring back those curls! My hair is thinner than yours and very fragile, I do wash'n'go + diffusing, and my protein treatment is AUBREY ORGANICS GPB, it is PERFECT (I have tried a LOT of protein treatment, with eggs, olive oil etc... but Aubrey Organics is the beeeest for me)

  • BTW I just bought the Curl enhancing Smothie and I am not sure if I like it...I am having some serious tangle issues.

  • I'm glad you decided to try to restore first... that is what I need to work on too.

  • @MsEileen1020 Trader Joe's has parabens, I was so disappointed to see that on the label.

  • Cute braids :) And I along with many do not recommend the Morrocanoil line... I say return it!

  • Seeing all that snow reminds me of home (Minnesota). lol.. Your hat and coat was so cute. the aphogee is really good. Your taking some pretty good steps to restoring your hair.

  • I love the hat!

  • Safflower oil doesn't penetrate the hair, it'll just lay on top. Liken it to mineral oil and castor oil. If you're trying to fix heat training coconut oil is the only oil that's been found to penetrate the hair shaft, which I think you would need. Love the braids, they're so cute =)

  • @NicoleNightly There is also jojoba oil which is closest to sebum, the oil naturally produced by our hair. It is easily absorbed by the hair shaft. You should definitely use heat to help the oil seep in.

  • @pmurray0107 Jojoba oil doesn't really penetrate the hair either. I use safflower and jojoba as a leave in, makes the hair feel very soft. For a deep treatment to correct damage, coconut oil is the way to go.

  • I love that style on you!!!

  • desert essence is awesome. i always use their products. their conditioners arent all that, but the shampoos are good. i would tell u to use just the hello hydration. desert essence and hello hydration are perfect together

  • i wanna see snow :-(

  • Girl, New York looks like Michigan :). Thanks for letting us travel along.

  • love these live type of videos!!

  • That Morrocan oil line does not work AT ALL!!! Big waste of money girl

  • the two braids looked really cute! braid out was adorable as well, good luck on your new journey mama

  • Even though we could only see the collar, I'm pretty sure I'm LOVING the coat mama!

  • lol i like your hair that way. its a cute style :) ... and random but i LOVE that music in the background.

  • You have to alternate between moisture and protien treatments

  • girl I am tring to nurse my hair back to health as well an I watched Ateyaa videos. She inspired me to use the whole Aphogee line. I think you should try the whole line and then maybe creating your own natural deep conditioner.

  • Amla try it it is great for hair will soften and restore remember all things take time

  • Hey Taren, You should try Nourish Spa from Trader Joes, it's natural and has good slip. I really like it.

  • @MsEileen1020 I second that - love the slip it gives.

  • @SwirlyCurlieCurls i used to use it YEARS ago. before the price went up 12931% LOL but maybe she should try that.

  • You look so cute even with the hair in braids. You always look fabulous! Go girl.

  • You've probably already answered this but what song is that playing on your intro/outro??

Also have you heard of the Ayurvedic hair regimen? That may help your hair as well.

  • Your hair is so cute in the braids! My hair didn't like the Moroccan Oil hair line but I'm interested to see if your hair likes it....after all my hair is 4B. :-) Good luck!!

  • I love your hair like that! :)

  • What the hale.. My Ricky's doesn't have any of these things. :(

  • Hey Taren, be sure to show your protective styles. I'm planning on doing this all winter and i'm at a loss!!! Thanks. :-)

  • Hey Taren... a suggestion for the bobby pins. Try those out. I'm not sure of the brand you have, but when i bought a jar of bobby pins from a local beauty supply store...when I used them to pins my twists for an updo or to secure out of place twists, I found black shards in my hair that came from the finish of the hair pins. i purchased more at Target and Wal-mart from Con - air and I have used those pins multiple times and no shards. Shards in the hair on wash day or a new style day is not fun!

  • @Br0wnSgr The same thing happened to me. I'm throwin em out with each broken one. Eventually I'm gonna buy better ones at a drugstore.

  • I love KNOT TODAY! It works even for the 4b, kinky girls!

  • That's what happens when you flat iron your hair daily. Lol.

  • thank you Taren for your last view videos and journey into your personal life past youtube world! LOL I have been dealing with my weight and my hair too! I just had a baby about 10 months ago and almost back to my size post baby! which was about a buck ten (110lbs) I want to be at least 130 a size 4 or 6. SoOoo I am on the band wagon with you and on my own weight and healthy hair journey. Thank you for your Realness and Truth!! Very refreshing!!! May God bless you through your journey!!!

  • Lol I know exactly what BSS you were in too, downstairs with all of those wigs. Totally off topic but I really wanted to know where did you get ur camel coat from? TIA

  • All I was trying to do is help. I DID NOT need everyone jumping down my throat about some simple advice I gave her. Besides, who asked any of you to reply anyways? If Taren felt as if it wasn't good advice, then that's the only person I needed to say anything. But forget I said anything...

  • I don't think you're supposed to use Aphogee that often...careful

  • Hey, I don't think you've ever said.... Which brand of flat iron do you use and what heat setting do you set it to? (Please don't say CHI...!)

  • Good Luck! I suggest that you up your deep conditioning treatments as well on your road to recovery....

  • OMG Taren... we even put the SAME HAIRSTYLE in after the treatment...girl I am cracking up!!!!! I did trim my ends though after doing the treatment and it made an even bigger difference! Your pixies were so cute, by the way :D

  • m so glad your not diffusing anymore. i would literally cringe everytime you did it.

  • Your braids look REALLY cute on you! Thanks for this vid; it was really fun & it made me miss NY. Thanks for 'Rickys' too - I almost feel like I've been there now, lol!

I'm soooooo glad you're not going to cut your hair just yet. It will be fine - you'll see.

    I ♥ YT :)

  • Have you tried the Shea Moisture Intensive Conditioner? I love it! And you're brave for going out in the snow to get hair stuff. Only a woman! Girl, I'm still sitting in the house with a du-rag on. I ain't going nowhere!

  • i love how we can travel with u on ur journeys. its so interesting!

i live in Miami and I HAVE NEVER SEEN SNOW IN MY LIFE LOL.

  • @N0gas DO NOT CUT YOUR HAIR ITS BEAUTIFUL!!!! I LIKE HAIR MAYONAISE ITS VERY MOISTURIZING.

  • Comment removed

  • @N0gas: You should really Come on Up North and See some Snow! I use to play with it all the time as a Toddler and drove my Mom Crazy when I would try to put it in my mouth., lol! In the past years (as an Adult) I lived in Miami, Miami Beach and Now North Florida but I still go Up North.

  • Blackonyx77 did a second big chop as a result of damage and totally inspired me to do it too. If you decide to bc again (which might not be as short as the rest of us but you've got alot of hair so anything you cut might be a bc lol), I think it'll be twice as bangin' the second time around. Hoping you can nurse it bk to Taren-like greatness :)

  • Well, Taren, as a long time follower, I know that you have been pretty wild with the straightening lately. However, we all have been victims to heat and its damaging effects at least once in our natural lives. You are on the right track with using protecive styles and aphoghee treatment. I know you will nurse your hair back to health! Keep at it and give it a couple of months!! Your hair will thank you and I am sooooo happy for you that you decided to take the appropriate steps to treat it!

  • lol you use an umbrella in the snow...?!

  • @xx2Sweet3 I do too, (tee hee)!

  • Your hair looks so cute in french braids! And Taren... at 10:11 that low 'messy' bun look that took you 2 seconds to tie up from your braid out looks very sophisticated... there's a lot of protective styles that will look great on you girl. Excited for you, this will give you a lot of new options for your hair!

  • I'm new to this whole natural thing... Haven't had a perm for six months and trying not to do the big chop. But since I see that it is so easy to get heat damage, I'm starting to think the big chop is the best thing to do. It's really hard not to flat iron when u have two completely different textures.

On another note... Really love your videos. I'm a new subscriber but I have spent hours watching them trying to learn abt natural hair. Being in Louisiana there aren't as many women participati

  • @lovelyamym I diidn't transition but I have two friends who are. Besides our hair diva Ms.Taren , I would suggest nina pruitt on here. She has SUPER LONG hair (mid-back length) & she transitioned for a LONG time. HTH!

  • One thing that is really good with restoring strength to your hair that I use personally is Amla. It is derived from Indian Gooseberry and is a natural qualities of strengthening the hair as well as defining your curl pattern. I didn't believe it until I tried it for myself. Think about it.

  • u should watch ninapruit she is a beast at protective styling expecially braidouts

  • Try plunking for heat-free volume!

  • @taren Thanks I will be checking my local supermarket now!

  • I suggest using Aubrey Organics Honey suckle Rose as a Leave-In and I would use Shea Moisture as your styler. I know you like more hold than that, but the smoothie is not something I would use as a leave in.

  • ur hair looks so cute that way. i would love to see some hair accessories with it....

  • The Aphogee goes a LONG way.

  • great video chik [thumbs up].. btw u kinda remind me of nikki minaj.. is it just me???

  • Don't put coconut oil in your hair before the knot today. Coconut oil is a sealant and it will seal ur cuticles and block the knot today. Switch the order..knot today then coconut oil. Best wishes on ur journey back to healthy hair!! Ciao bella

  • I never understood why people use umbrellas in the snow. I was raised in upstate New York and whenever I saw someone with an umbrella in the snow...I always thought it was an oxymoron (if I used that correctly). I understand using it to shield you from the sun and rain but snow? Just wondering.

  • @themom1123 I thought the samething too but yesterday when it was snowing, the snow was sitting on my head and thats not good because the snow can melt and wet your hat and your hair. and plus no one doesn't want the snow flying in their face when there walking. lmao

  • Curlformers long and extra widddddddde :] They dry faster than rollers. And good luck on your journey!!! :] :]

  • You need to use your Heutiful steamer with the Moroccan oil that will take your deep conditioner to the next level.. Yaaay to Kinky Curly Knot Today (that stuff works so well as a leave-in)! The only thing about coconut oil is that it makes your hair limp and heavy.

  • you really should try the "its a ten" conditioning mask

  • You are soo pretty! Your hair is beautiful the braid out looked really nice actually lol

  • The aphogee works really well... Dont be scared of it, it doesnt make your hair that fragile when using it... well mine anyways, I love it. Curls are ALWAYS popping after using the protien treatment! Good luck!

  • it's funny what you said about the 'braid out'... this is how i do mine, just two french braids and it always turns out very nice :)

  • @SwirlyCurlieCurls ill never spend that much my friend is from Africa I can get it from the source lol thank God!

  • Girl u have guts!, i've been hibernating for the past two days here, snowing like crazy! lol

  • Hey Taren and naturals this Wednesday is the perfect time to re up on Karen's Body Beautiful Hair Mask. It will be 50% off from noon-1pm EST with the coupon code: FLASH!!!

  • Protein is what creates the structure to your hair. Heat robs the protein. Glad you added some protein to your regimen. :D

  • You prefer the snow over rain?! Wow! That is the first time I have heard that, lol! I WISH that it never snowed here in Michigan. Anyhow, please let us know how the mask works out.

  • Have you tried aloe vera gel for definition and hold? I switched to that from Ecostyler and have great results. It's natural too :-)

  • Protein is what creates the structure to your hair. Add some protein to your regimen. :D

  • Jerseystylzz did a beer rinse on her hair when she got some heat damage and it seemed to help some with some of her curls reverting.

  • use the moraccan oil mask its good stuff!!

good luck on your journey, I'm sure your hair will bounce back :)

  • also you should try joico reconstruct shampoo and conditioner..it works amazing..a stylist recommended it to me. and it actually works..for my straight or curly hair.

  • The snow is beautiful!!! I miss this time of year back home in D.C., Stay warm!

  • where did u get that cute hat frm?? :-)

  • I wear braidouts from 2 braids and 4 me..it gives me the best results on slightly damp hair..

  • your hair looked really cute in those two braids and the braid out looked pretty good too......hmmmm gives me an idea lol....thanks :)

  • I have faith in ur hair I cant wait to see how these products work for u =)

  • Good luck Taren. I'm sure your hair will be back to normal in no time. Just do your treatments and protective styles often and you may not even need to cut. :-)

  • Quick Taren! Where can I download that song in the beginning?!?!?!?!

  • I think if you want to get your curls back no straightening. I notice that some of my curls reverted back and some of my hair I had to cut.

  • I haven't heard great things about the Jojoba conditioner FYI :{ The Yes to Cucumbers and Yes to Tomatoes Conditioners are actually pretty good, and my staple conditioners are usually more expensive and order online only. I didn't think the Yes To would work, but I am impressed. They are also much better than the Tresseme naturals. They have slip, actually moisturize, and leave the hair shiny. Good for detangling, leave-in, deep cond. etc.

  • I am aswell in the process of recovering from "HEAT DAMAGE", i am about 5 months in and my curls are pretty much back in tack.......THE KEY::::: is to keep it simple...always keep your hair moisturized to gain, heat free and try to do protctive styles as much as possible.....all i have been using for the last few months is coconut oil, shea moisture curly smoothie, and styling gel...GOOD LUCK

  • Hi Taren try benzonite clay. It is fantastic and it restores your hair and curl pattern. It's a little messy but believe me it's sooo worth it. Simply follow the directions and let it sit. Sorry I posted so late.

  • Your determined spirit will lead you to success with the heat damage. May I suggest that you are being used for the benefit of others in this so, keep your head up and protected from the elements. Stay blessed. And by the way, I loooooove the hat and coat. Especially the hat!

  • glad to see you more upbeat about it now!! good luck with the treatments!! :)

  • Don't forget you still have a heap full of hair beautiful! It will come back fuller then ever.

  • yes and your coat and hat are too cute

  • you look cute with the two french braids

  • I LOVE your videos!

  • Ahhh!!! I am so glad to see you with the ApHogee products. They are the BEST protien restorative products out there. I've been wringing my hands over your last video worrying over what I should say. I had a similar issue with my hair years ago. It did come back but it took months and TLC. ApHogee helped and I used Garnier Fructis shampoos and conditioners which are protien based. My recovery stunned my hairdresser but again, time.

  • this was a fun vid, goin out with you lol

  • Ahh! I'm in nj and it's snowing here too like crazy! Good luck and I know myself and probably some other women will be on this journey right along with u. Thanks soo much for sharing!

  • @sweeteababy0427, You are SOOOOOOO right. Taren, GET YO' MONEY BACK, GURL!!!!! Also, good luck with your hair recovery!

  • I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your videos and knowledge wiith everyone. Since Iam newly natural this is sooo helpful to me. I have learned so much from you tube. I dont know if I would have ever gone natural had it not been for you and the many other beautiful women sharing knowledge with us. Good luck on your road to hair recovery.

  • Return the Moroccan Oil Mask! I am going to do a video on that line...its really not worth the money! Its really a marketing gimmick!

  • @sweeteababy0427 uh oh! Lol

  • @taren916 ITS WORKS WELL O MY HAIR! AND MY HAIR IS THICK PLUS i got hair type 4a-4c

  • @sweeteababy0427 I agree the oil was used on me in a high end salon and it was ok but I was not impressed with anything but the shine.

  • what do you think about washing and deep conditioning before very serious detangling.?I have not been taking care of my hair well and its needs some love. I am thinking about trying some hair rules travel size products that i have.

  • love it taren! you will get your hair back : )

  • I really like the two braids. Could you do a tutorial for the two braids as a protective style?

  • Taren916, the snow!!!!!!, that was so great to look at. thanks for sharing the products that you will be using.

  • looks like you are well on your way.

  • wow i just think that youre one of the most beautiful people i have ever seen! you just have a very gorgeous face. I think you have a great personality and you make great videos! keep going! lol i love you! :)

  • Taren you CAN use the coconut oil first because it absorbs into the shaft, then the Knot Today, and then another oil [Jojoba or EVOO] to seal to moisture. So you didn't get it mixed up! :)

  • yes, keep the MO. Be careful with Aphogee due to animal proteins. They may not work for everyone. It may be safer to do MO first than Aphogee

  • Natural hair care is a journey and I know I have made my share of mistakes on my journey. I have been natural for over 8yrs so I understand with the way that we all seem to nurture and baby are natural manes it is hard to think about cutting it or making any drastic changes to it, and it’s even harder when we notice damage. No doubt that this is something that you will bounce back from you have beautiful hair, you'll just have 2 make adjustments 2your current routine.

  • Aphogee worked for me, using 1 ½ -2 mo, I have noticed strength and growth. Application of oils especially to the ends, like u have started doing is also going to help (safflower is great ( along with coconut, olive, soybean oils )…I think you should do what you mentioned and try a few treatments (which I hope work in bringing back or original texture) however I do think you may find that you might have to cut some of your ends off but, I think you should be able to retain most of your length.

  • Wigs are a great idea and will help you stay away from heat while your hair is healing. I also suggest hair steam treatments especially in the winter months (I do a natural honey 1 and a few others that work great). I know you want to be able to wear your hair curly and straight hair and I think you can, once your texture starts to come back.

  • . I looked at LeobodyC5 page (thank you for suggesting her she has gorgeous natural hair) and I notices that she uses the same hair straightener I have used for the past 5 years (the Maxiglide). I have never had heat damage using this product and I like that it steams the ends to retain moisture. I am adding the video where she talks about it. I am also currently altering my routine to achieve the length I want so I do understand and just wanted to help if I could…good luck :)
