cheetahs are incredible. never fail to impress me. check out some of the bbc's work on them, especially "big cat diary." the music on this was a bit.. ridiculous.. i was hoping she was hunting down the sound man or something!
i think he's mostly right, actually. if a cheetah doesn't hit her mark, the amount of energy expended is so great, she has to rest for about an hour [i think] to recharge. also, once she has caught her prey, she can't just drag it into a tree like a leopard, lions or hyenas could easily take it from her.
lest we brew a fondue for the cheetah, many gazelles do escape. gazelles are great at turning on a dime, are almost as fast as cheetahs, and have better endurance than cheetahs, and consequently the vast majority of cheetah hunts are unsuccessful

I've read somewhere that they can't run at full speeds for long distance because they will overheat, rather than having used up all their energy.
