my friend is doing a PhD on this topic and others related to it. and actually 90% of these "performing animals" have been captured from the wild, drugged, severely beaten and starved. they only feed them when they get something right in their training, and if they dont, they are given a lot of what is called negative training, where they are beaten until unconcious. circus trainers use electric shocks too. they are trained for a minimun of 5years before performing.

Why is everyone so hung up about the woman riding a tiger? Do you have any issues with people riding horses? mules? elephants? get on with it... ANY animal can be ridden - if trained - and the training is pretty similar, whether it is a horse or mule or elephant or tiger.
That is so stupid. Horses are bred to be ridden and to be kept as pets. Tiger's aren't. This tiger was probably stolen from the wild and treated so cruelly that it just had to do what it was told. Elephants aren't meant to be ridden either. Also, all animals have different minds and smartness so obviously the training would not be the same.
Don't be stupid, a horse/pony/mule ect is bred to be ridden, over time their spine has developed to carry weight, that's why you zebra and zebra crosses have weak backs, and if that woman got on a pony the same height as the tiger, that would be cruel.

If she did she would never have got astride its back.I think she hand reared it from a small tiger ansd gradually managex to get its trust and after a while it would let her stroke it and eventually get astide its back. It must have taken some courage on her part and she must have trusted the animal not to bite her when she first got on it. It must have been a long training programme which paid off in the end.

my friend is doing a PhD on this topic and others related to it. and actually 90% of these "performing animals" have been captured from the wild, drugged, severely beaten and starved. they only feed them when they get something right in their training, and if they dont, they are given a lot of what is called negative training, where they are beaten until unconcious. circus trainers use electric shocks too. they are trained for a minimun of 5years before performing.

Why is everyone so hung up about the woman riding a tiger? Do you have any issues with people riding horses? mules? elephants? get on with it... ANY animal can be ridden - if trained - and the training is pretty similar, whether it is a horse or mule or elephant or tiger.

That is so stupid. Horses are bred to be ridden and to be kept as pets. Tiger's aren't. This tiger was probably stolen from the wild and treated so cruelly that it just had to do what it was told. Elephants aren't meant to be ridden either. Also, all animals have different minds and smartness so obviously the training would not be the same.

Don't be stupid, a horse/pony/mule ect is bred to be ridden, over time their spine has developed to carry weight, that's why you zebra and zebra crosses have weak backs, and if that woman got on a pony the same height as the tiger, that would be cruel.

Tigers are known to carry kills on their backs, usually cows weighing over 300 lbs, for distances of 2 miles (Jim Corbett's "Man Eaters of Kumaon" has full details). The wikipedia article says: "(Tigers can) carry domestic livestock weighing 50 kg (110 lb) while easily jumping over fences 2 m (6 ft 6 in) high". Further, it is easy to speak of horses as *bred to be ridden*. Do you really think the horse agrees the first time? Please keep an open mind.

I do not think she would have to break its spirit or put fear into it. If she did she would never have got astride its back.I think she hand reared it from a small tiger ansd gradually managex to get its trust and after a while it would let her stroke it and eventually get astide its back. It must have taken some courage on her part and she must have trusted the animal not to bite her when she first got on it. It must have been a long training programme which paid off in the end.

Wow... have you ever been backstage at a circus? If you have, you'd know that all that "gained the tiger's trust" crap is a blatant lie. Ask any former circus worker and they will explain the cruel methods they use to tame these wild animals.
It's completely despicable that this kind of cruelty is still allowed in America. Our society will make no progress unless circuses are seen for what they truly are: legal animal abuse as entertainment.

Poor tiger :s I went to a show like that when I was small and enjoyed it until I was old enough to discover that the animals are mistreated. I much ratehr see a tiger in the wild than being made to preform tricks for some circus.

On the other hand, if instead of choosing to reward me for desired behavior as discussed, they were to resort to force, I would fight back and have them prosecuted for battery. Monty Roberts trains horses and others without cruelty. In his movie, Shyboy, the Horse That Came in From the Wild, he set Shyboy free to join a herd of wild horses. After a couple of days of that Shyboy came back to visit Monty.
