This was one of the most convincing versions of this aria I have heard. Incredible. So moving. I can't believe that It would receive so much criticism. With High notes like Ramey and such incredible warmth and conviction to the character, this truly captures Wagners true meaning of gesamkunstwerk.
gtelloz I completely agree with you so many of the comments posted here are full of anger and ignorance. Simon Estes is a master of masters, his voice is so powerful and commanding and he performs every act with brilliance. Many of the people here possibly have very little or no knowledge of operatic singing. Gtelloz you are doing a wonderful job in posting this kind of work which promotes classical music with respect and dignity. Praises to all passionate lovers of classical music.
I saw this performance broadcasted on TV when I was 11 years old and it just blew me away. "The Flying Dutchman" became my favorite opera and Richard Wagner has been my all-time favorite composer ever since.
Estes is phenomenal, for me, no one can top him. :-)
Many foreigners have lived in the US for MORE than 20 years and speak English fluently....But they still have a heavy accent...Some people just never get rid of their accent. That's the case with Mr Estes.
Totally aside from my other comments on the the race-related argument...WOW this is really good. What a marvelous voice this man has. This excerpt is up there with with George London, Hans Hotter, etc....
It is not just that Simon has lived in Germany before, in fact he lived there for over 20 years. In addition, how could this production, regarded as the best available on video, attain that status if a basic element like diction was poor?
It is the voice that counts and Simon Estes does a great job here! Personally I prefer Hans Hotter, but that has to do with Hotter's voice, and yes, sentiment. But somehow it is unfair to compare anyone with Hotter. Having said that, it is ridiculous to judge singers by the colour of their skin. as long as they know what they are singing and as long as the voices are beautiful. And Estes has a beautiful voice and he knows what he is doing!!!!
well its obvious you'll say whatever you want, but that doesn't make you right. And i'm not a cracker, i'm a human being who respects other humans regardless of their 'race' (I don't even know why that word is applied to people with different skin color anyway)
You said that I was clearly a negro by my screenname.I would say judging by that statement you obviously refer to people by the color of their skin. I don't care what color you are you are still an ass hole.
I didn't see this comment, so I can't know if it was actually offensive, but I also would guess that you are [insert "black" here if "negro" offends] by your screen name. And it appears that the majority of your subscriptions are to black artists'/figures' channels. And furthermore, you got REALLY mad about the original comment that Estes doesn't look German, which implies you took it personally.
I must therefore conclude that you are a black person.
I might add that when Aida is done by white sopranos, it is usually with dark makeup on.
And I will FURTHER add, that if I were singing Porgy or Amonasro and someone remarked that I didn't look Ethiopian...because I'm a white guy...I would in no way be offended and I would find it very strange if someone were offended on my behalf. I'd probably be amused.
All gifts come from God. It is a shame in 2008 that we still don't realize how talented people are. I think it is a low blow when we use race. I am haitian and I am studing Italian, German, French. I think music has no language, but due to stupid people we can't even display our talents without being reminded that we are a particular race.
Great voice! I've heard him live and the sound is warm and hugh. Unfortunately, his German is a bit strange sounding even though he speaks the language fluently
What a voice! Amazingly powerful.

For me, Estes is the best "Dutchman" ever.

Painfully bad german..not too bad otherwise.
goldenthroat86 3 years ago
Why do you say the German is bad? Are you from Germany?
I think his diction and pronunciation are amazing. (I happen to know that Simon Estes is fluent in German and has lived in Germany before.)
