  • i'm a lot slower on dvorak but I know for a fact that the evangelists are right - it's ten times more comfortable than the regular layout since I switched.

  • God, how I wish we could type homework, that way thingswould be much more easy.

I want to switch over to Dvorak, but I'm using a notebook, I have wrist pains.

  • @youtubamigo Summer vacation is the perfect time to learn new skills. By the time the next semester starts you will be up to speed. Good luck and enjoy the summer break.

  • 110 qwerty -> 120+ sustained on dvorak after 3 months.

    currently learning left-hand dvorak (single-handed)

  • Take it from me, I've reached speeds of around 130-140wpm with the QWERTY keyboard; so for around ten years, I've had this layout built in me.

But today, I figured I should give Dvorak a go. And although I'm typing on a qwerty setup (considering I've been brought down to like 10wpm on the dvorak system), I dl'ed a program to help me learn dvorak.

  • Do games automatically recognise a Dvorak keyboard ? Or do you have to remap the controls for every single game.

  • I heard that some emulators automatically recognize Dvorak keyboard. But most (about 90%?) of games don't seem to auto-recognize Dvorak.

  • Actually there is no problem for games. If you use windows, you can press CTRL+SPAC to switch between QWERT and DVORAK keyboard layouts.

  • I had been using Qwerty for almost 10 years, since I had my own computer for the first time when I was only 10 years old. But last winter vacation, I finally learned Dvorak, and since then I've used, and now I'm using Dvorak keyboard.

I felt as if some invisible thing grabs my hand to inturupt my typing while I use qwerty.

But when I use Dvorak, although typing speed doesn't show significant change, somehow I felt it's so much comfortable and convenience than Qwerty.

  • Then there's a problem...

    Japanese Qwerty IME......

When I type Japanese, I still have to use Qwerty....

And when I type Japanese for long time, then suddenly try to type English in Dvorak, I'm sometimes confused between Dvorak and Qwerty. (Maybe that's why my typing speed 'doesn't show significant change' in Dvorak...)

  • that is true if you use IME for DVORAK. But there are some article on internet telling people to setup DVORAK keyboard by modify registry key. by this way, you can load Japanese IME based on DVORAK .Just google it

  • I don't think I have what it takes to learn a new typing method. I've been typing qwerty my whole life (like most people), and I type at about 100wpm on average. Learning a new layout would feel like learning a new language. It would be nice to learn, but I honestly think my brain can't handle it. :P

  • The beginning is tough but after comme the fun...

    It's really a pleasure...

After almost 20 years, I quit Azerty (french qwerty) for a french dvorak the Bépo and my hands ands fingers thank me ! Champagne ! xD

  • I've been using Dvorak for about 9 months now. I had been typing in Qwerty for 20 years, and could sustain I'd say 100 wpm. I'm currently at about 80 wpm in Dvorak. The best way to describe the flow of typing, is that it feels "silky".

I hate that our education system, and powers that be hold on to old systems like Qwerty. Maybe one day Mac will lead the way and come sell their systems Dvorak only as an example to others lol.

No chance, but one can dream.

    Dvorak for me. Happy typing.

  • @pixel6

    I type 120 wpm/639 cpm on QWERTY so I can't switch D:

  • I wish more people would use Dvorak, so computers at libraries and offices would cater to us...

Btw, the excellent *FREE* Touch Typing Program that marcosEstrello is referring to is called "STAMINA".

"STAMINA" lets you practice for both Qwerty and Dvorak, and phrase exercises is extremely amusing and stops you from getting bored!!!

  • I've been one of those Dvorak nerds for just over three years now. I was a hunt-and-peck typist on QWERTY, and when I finally decided to start touch-typing I chose Dvorak because it was much more logical and much easier.

I still use Dvorak to this day, at about a max speed of around 100 wpm. I have learned how to touchtype on QWERTY for when I can't switch, and I can manage fairly well with that. Overall, I am quite happy with my decision to go DV. =P

  • Its been 7 months since switching now, I'm basically a nerd so I do a lot of typing. My old QWERTY speed was 140wpm max, and after 8 months, I'm up to ~120wpm, not quite there yet but I definitely feel that it's possible. So much more comfortable to type in also. :D Dvorak ftw.

  • Man I would love to switch to Dvorak any day. Only thing is at my school, home, library etc. they are all QWERTY layout. Not to mention games that are all made for the QWERTY layout.

  • Thats why you carry around a little program that switches the layout, there's some great one at DvZine, also I made one using autohotkey. Google it :D

  • If you people are getting tired on a QWERTY keyboard layout than my advice to you folks is slow yourself down. I only type about 45-55 wpm(sometimes 60-70 when my fingers feel like it) on a QWERTY layout and I hardly ever get tired, because I do a little thing called pacing myself. I tried typing on a dvorak layout and I really didn't care for it. My fingers would cramp like crazy. :(

  • I always typed on a qwerty keyboard and I averaged 75 word per minute and about a week ago I decided to give dvorak a try because it was supposedly that good and I am extremely impressed with it up to now.

I started at about 5 word per minute and full of rage (hehe)... and a week later I am already at 35-40 word/min and I love the layout.

    It's really worth giving a try :)

  • I was taught QWERTY in school for my first touch typing class in middle school, then halfway through my second typing class my highschool freshman year (was required for business classes), I decided I was gonna teach myself dvorak. Took only about a week to learn all the keys, then about 3 weeks to be able to get up to a decent paced typing speed.

At QWERTY I typed max about 77 wpm

At DVORAK I type max about 90 wpm.

    Dvorak all the way.

  • Wait, you taught yourself dvorak?

  • Yea, I just practiced doing all the keys. Then once I had the keys memorized I downloaded some cool free typing practice program that had phrases, letters, etc etc that showed you error % and wpm typed.

  • Oh, that's cool. Think I'll change soon.

  • I learn't touch typing when I was 5 years old. No joke, I was brought up for it to be used as another languages or form of interpreting text. :)

  • I typed on Qwerty for like 8 years and switched to Dvorak for like 2 months now. Can't get up to my previous 120 wpm YET, but i can feel the improvements in stamina so i love it, even though the world is built for qwerty lol, eg games etc.

  • I learned Qwerty 15 years ago. My hands were tired just after 10 minutes of typing.

Thanks to this movie, I understood the concepts of Dvorak keyboard and created one for my native language (romanian). I am using it for 3 months now. Great improvement over Qwerty.

What is interesting is that even this layout for romanian is better in English than Qwerty. This shows why nobody should use Qwerty - it is a very bad layout.

I want to thank the person (an invalid!) who has put the video here.

  • Qwerty's not so bad, it was great when it was invented. Way out of date now though, Dvorak's definitely better.

  • actually, qwerty was developed to be slow. So that the arms on a typing machine would not jam. With electronic typing machines now(computers) there is no reason (other than being stubborn) not to switch. Dvorak is better in all ways.

  • Eh, I don't really have a stance on this. No doubt dvorak is faster, but I think not wanting to completely retrain is a perfectly fair reason to stick with the standard keyboard.

  • jdkshadjCsd

  • youre a douchebag

  • carpal tunnel anyone?

  • I was more pleased with the ergonomics of dvorak when compared to qwerty than the speed increase. Strict touch-typing by qwerty was so unpleasant to me that I constantly move my hands over the keyboard to avoid uncomfortable angles for the fingers.

  • Huraaaaay for Mrs Fenton!

  • i am so thankful to DVORAK !

  • Sorry ssr696969, attention span too short.

  • too long

  • if that video's not sped up, that's some amazing typing

  • holy shit these people are typing like superman

  • everyone exept people with disabilities or moyo geeks like me would hate switching.

    im typing in dvorack.

  • I also switched (I'm an Über geek). It's been about 3 weeks and I'm already starting to surpass my speed.

"The less you switch, the more you don't switch... your fingers will explode if you don't."

  • Well the idea is to learn this first. Go Dvorak!

  • Nice video. Dvorak is okay and definitely better than Qwerty for anyone first learning to touch type. Someone in the computer age (almost 70 years after that film) who already touch types in Qwerty that is thinking about switching should take a look at Colemak also. Colemak dot com. I am using Colemak to type this.

  • For anyone who wants to know dvorak for mac is in international in system preferences somewhere.

  • I switched over a month ago. I regret that I've took so long to switch. My wrist pains disappeared. Typing speed is not reaching my previous QWERTY one, but exceeds 50wpm.

I thank you for posting this video.

    Viva la Dvorak

  • I switched to Dvorak a few months ago and now I don't look at the key board since they're still qwerty. I showed this to my mother when she asked me why. Thank you ancelme for posting these.

  • Makes sense, but for those who only know QWERTY & will only enounter that in their workplace, how do we adapt?

I've been advised to get a Kinesis Freedom VIP & numeric keypad. Obviously, if I used a less strenuous method of typing, my injuries would be ameliorated even more.

Is it possible to re-map keyboards like the Kinesis Freedom to the Dvorak layout if you decide to convert? But then it is possible to mentally switch between layouts if you have to work on a QWERTY temporarily again?

  • Well if your workplace has any up to date computers, the dvorak keyboard layout is already programed. All you have to do (For windows XP) is go to control panel / date, language, time/ regional language / Language tab on top / details / Select on the scroll bar. The only problem is that they keys will look to be QWERTY, so print out the Dvorak keyboard layout and keep it around you.

  • Yeah, I actually have very little problems switching between QWERTY and Dvorak mentally. I'm still gaining speed on Dvorak (I can only type at about 100WPM, whereas with QWERTY I can get upwards of 160), so I'll usually have my AIM window set to Dvorak while Firefox is in QWERTY, and it's no problem.

  • yes, if you commonly switch between them. i reconfigured my qwerty keyboard.

  • This is in excellent one describing the analysis process in detail.

A good one for showing in midst of presentations. And convincing too...

    (I'm typing this in Dvorak)

  • Rush Holt if he would help support a move to introduce it legislatively to schools at he kindergardent laevel

  • I don't think that the congress would do anything about it. They only push around populist ideas.

I think the best way is to use a bottom up approach.

Tell your friends about how fast you are typing.

    I use Dvorak btw.

  • anfgel no. 1 would you rather fight than switch to thealternate standard keyboraerd o. thanks for ou support, write your congressman.l

  • Your description is wrong. The keyboards most people use today are referred to as "QWERTY." The "DVORAK" was named for the same reason. Cool video.

  • He said "it is in every computer today" which is true.

    GO DVORAK

  • TRUE Dvorak was approx 40 keys, ANSI alternate is now 104 key. Thansks. send me email if you want more info to cark@comcast.netCheck out TCF5004 next Sat.

  • Rush Holt if he would help support a move to introduce it legislatively to schools at he kindergardent laevel

  • send email to your congressman ask him to contact Rush Holt if he would help support a move to introduce it legislatively to schools at he kindergardent laevel.

  • Invented by Dr Augustus Dvorak - the name doesn't come from the position of the keys like QWERTY

  • Rush Holt if he would help support a move to introduce it legislatively to schools at he kindergardent laevel

  • Dvorak was named after Augusta Dvorak the guy invented the dvorak layout.
