one of the first things i learned in art class, school, college, ever-----never rub graphite into your artwork with your fingers. It doesn't allow you to erase or fix that part of the picture after, due to the fact that you just pressed all that graphite into the paper with the oils in your fingers.

@deon6664 Look at each chunk or even strand slightly seperately, yet look of all of the hair as one. Pay attention to the shadow and highlights of each section. At first, take your time till you get a hang of it, thinking rationally, and eventually you should get it.

it's not charcoal , actualy by the colors of the pencil ( blue , white and black)i can say that is a staedtler ( i got the same pencils too , i don't know if you know the brand), you can buy a box of twelve pencils with F, H, 2H, HB ,B, 2B.....etc. I think she's using an 8B or a 7B perhaps...those are pretty black.

Using a blending stump isn't to save your finger prints, it's so that you don't get the oils from your skin onto the page, thus making your media immobile and thick.

Oh yeah, cloths of that sort work as well. Blending stumps are usually found in art supply stores. Granted, I went to art school so I'm used to different things. (i.e. Stores that cater to students). However, based on what a blending stump is/looks like, you probably could just roll a piece of paper up into the shape of a pencil and use that. Chamois are used as well, which is basically like a napkin. Just take a peek around the internet for stores/images. If not, I can help more. :)

you'd get a much better overall realistic feel to the drawing if you used a blending stump instead of your finger. using ur fingertip leaves oils on the paper, which can either yellow it, or alter the graphite color. blending stump can get a lot more accurate w/ your blending and you can get much closer details.

if your going to smudge use a pencil like thing thats made out of paper thats rooled up and shaped like a pencil its much easier. its very good btw

Though using kasumisman's suggestion is good, I always prefer using my finger because the left over lead on my finger from smudging is good to add soft shading, I just use a finger that usually doesn't touch the paper easily. Awesome drawing, I may have some pictures for you!
