This guy realized that great wealth could be had by doing work that, while not unusual, called for a great degree of stupidity among the participants. He succeeded for a long time and now pays with his freedom. The game he was playing had nothing to do with family, freedom, success etc. It was greed. GREED. Americans know greed, they know it very well. It keeps guys like this one in the lap of luxury for a long time and, had he not been caught, would still be in the game today.
"Incompetence" is NOT the reason why they did not "catch" him. They already "caught" him. They simply did nothing about it. And the only question to ask is "why".
@anastasia2657 I really felt sorry for this 1 guy-he was a doctor and was 80 years old-He invested all of his money with Madoff so he could retire with a modest income-The doctor lost everything-He broke down and cried on 60 minutes-Here is a man who worked all of his life and thought that he was investing his money wisely and now has nothing-Madoff is scum
@curtisjones400 We will all be crying when the effects of what Madoff did take its toll on the rest of us. You cannot have a scam of this magnitude not effect the rest of society, but it will take a little time for us to feel the full magnitude of the scam. What is even more mysterious is that numerous banks were his "victims." They were in the best position to know this was a scam. We do not even know of the extent of the damage in Europe. All the royals of Europe were investing with him.
the fed's weren't ready to expose you simply because it wasn't your turn. they have plenty of distractions going on, when the veil of secretcy gets a little light shone on their dirty dealings thats when a bigger scandel averts attention yet again.
Brnie Madoff should be let go because the grandiosity of his crime is only due to the governments incompetence to notice mishandling of investors money
@mossandpeterson Why is that asshole of a "reporter" not arrested after getting physical with a peaceful citizen walking on the street? Because in America the law is being applied equally, sometimes more equally on certain people than on others...Example: I never heard about all the employees that came to "inspect" Bernie's books being punished for what they DIDN'T do.
Another typical bumbling govt agency. This is why I would never vote liberal and therefore have dozens more agencies like the SEC come into existence.
@pismo10 What kind of thinking is yours? You would never vote liberal? The SEC is the essence of the conservatives, the idea of speculating with other people's monies is conservative, the fact that regulators are so incompetent and inept is because they are conservatives! If you wanna have a change in all those abuses than you have to vote for the change! Anything BUT republicans!
@Purrete Big govt liberalism = failure, just like the SEC, the DOE, and on and on. More govt = lower standards of living. The SEC is a big govt LIBERAL organization. Read some history please and learn something.. Big govt is a LIBERAL ideaology, big regulators(like the SEC) is a LIBERAL ideology. big words.
@pismo10 Hey, I think YOU dont know your history: the 1st world, the industrialized world, where a 20 min. snow storm doesn't bring down the grid for 2 million people for 8 days, where no 40 million citizens live without medical coverage, where distances and weights are measured in modern Km. and Kg. and not archaic miles and gallons, stopped whining about big govt. and found the balance for the standard of living way higher than in this USA. Just compare vacation times of any W. European ctry.
@pismo10 I did get my clue: gun toting assholes like you are bringing down America. They attack me personally when they run out of arguments. Why are the Japanese cars 1,000 times better than any American? How about the German cars? Why everything has to be imported? Because Americans like you are incompetent in what they do, unproductive and inefficient. BTW, Im not going to Cuba, its a shit country with an American trained lawyer for dictator.
@Purrete Japanese cars are better because loser liberals like you have destroyed America with their unions and endless regulations which has pushed manufacturing overseas. You contradicted yourself constantly. Even in the same sentence. Govt is not the answer. Read some history when you finish high school. Since you don't like Cuba, try NKorea...
Well SEC is run by a bunch of idiots who know nothing how to catch a cheater. SEC should be partly blame of the loss of these people who invested money thru Bernie Madoff.
any amount over 10k should require fund managers to deposit an equal amount with the federal bank at minimal interest and if the fund defaults the interest goes to the treasury the principal amount goes back to the original depositor...trust me ...if they are serious they can afford it...
SEC Board is mostly made up of lawyers that are trained to read financial reports but don't know how to use economic or math formulas...in order to keep wall street on its toes in the future it must establish a balanced , independent board made up of lawers and forensic mathematicians with a flare to dig deep for however long it takes...
@tscholent Sounds good to me and the tscholent smells.....hhhhmmmm real mean! With a kartoffel kugel.....that is competent specialists supervising....even meaner! A piece a kishkes in there.......that is the board punishing exemplary the reckless and the erratics.....priceless!!! Unfortunately in America we'll have for the next 200 yrs just a tasteless, dry and colorless tscholent.
Where did all the money that Madoff defrauded so many of go? It must have gone to Money Heaven in an underground vault somewhere in the Negev Desert in Israel.
Madoff didn't steal just from the rich... ... Do your research. Read article in NEWSWEEK Dec 2008 " Anyone taking secret delight in watching fat cats lose their fortunes in the Bernie Madoff meltdown should put their schadenfreude on hold: you could get dragged in before the final tally is made. Pensioners, municipal workers, students on scholarship and middle-class Americans all are likely to be burned by the spectacular flare-out of Bernard L. Madoff ... "
He's stupid, what are you gonna do with all that money? Should've stopped at 1 billion which is more than enough money to do anything you want and live an amazing life, and wouldn't have gotten caught.
If Bernie really fessed up cleanly he would open up such a can of worms in Financial Markets globally that many more would take a fall for pariticipating in multiple stratospheric ponzi schemes. With good behaviour he might get a pardon like Miliken. If he sings in the hole they could lace his food for a slow adios. There are many Madoffs out there it's just hush hush
The FBI and Secret Service must have protected him after he admitted his guilt, for some of the powerful people who he stole money from would have hired Ukraine's assassins and send him to the land of the dead for sure.
This guy realized that great wealth could be had by doing work that, while not unusual, called for a great degree of stupidity among the participants.
