Persons aren't aware that THE impetus for the system was for downtown redevelopment. In the 80s downtown LA was going thru a big "redevelopment" with skyscrapers being built on the old leveled Bunker Hill and the rail system was seen as the way to tie the westside with the new developing downtown and (hopefully) bring some of the businesses of the westside/midwilshire back to downtown.
I love how this video is hopeful about fulfilling what once seemed like a distant dream. Its amazing how we now take the Red Line for granted. Fantastic video! Great music too!
@EzraHorne It's hard to believe this is 25 years old, all the talking points are the same as what is being used now for the Westside extension. I'm pretty hopeful that we can continue to build a complete system.
the subway came too late to los angeles. they've been planning this system since the 1950's. finally they implemented a rail line in 1990 the blue line.
Henry Waxman and Zev Yaroslavsky are the two reasons that the transit map at 1:30 has not become a reality.

Wow, they predicted almost 400,000 riders a day by the year 2000. I believe ridership is still under 200,000 boardings (not riders) per day in 2010!

@EzraHorne It's true. When I heard that, I had to laugh and set my head down just a bit, since we only get 150k boardings daily.

if you look closely at the map inside the Washington MetroRail car you can see that that has changed a lot too.

Of course, the routing was changed. Plus, the North Hollywood section didn't open until 2000.
