  • JUST MISSED!!! "Peg" just missed making the Billboard's Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 19 weeks in the Top 100 in 1977/78. This was Steely Dan's second record to peak at No. 11; "Reeling In The Years" did it in 1973!!!

  • WOW!!!!! Just KILLER, enough said.

  • Herringtons solo rocks, he is a master!

  • Who's the bass player here?

  • DAMN, JON HERRINGTON FUCKING ROCKS THAT GUITAR

  • Nov 2011, Napier, NZ

  • Is this version available to buy anywhere?? I have looked on iTunes and amazon but don't see it anywhere. Jons guitar playing is awesome.

  • This is great!!

  • I love this live..so good!!!!!

  • best band i never saw in concert

  • I'm glad I watched this for the comments alone...

  • Who is Peg? From the lyrics I know she is a movie star...anyone know who it is? He sees her picture blown up in blue print blue. It's your favorite foreign movie...maybe she wasn't good enough in the states and had to make foreign films? Can someone help me out here because I love this song.

  • @cardsfanok5 it was about a porn star... look up Dr Wu, another Steely Dan song... that was an actual porn film too... not to mention a "steely dan" was a marital aid...

  • @11weinstein For God's sake man, tell me who this 'Peg' is? When I search my porn collection, seems like Peg means something completely else...

  • Just when they are smoking they stop the song!

  • damn this is music i grew up in stl. in the hood blue eyed soul was @ this will always be this shit

  • @nancy4923 eat a cock Nancy

  • Thats a pretty sweet bass line holy shnap......... classic song too.

  • Ran into John Herington after last years Massey Hall Toronto concert in the lobby of the Pantages where we both staying. Walked up and said Good Morning Mr ES335. Outstanding and cool guy, had a coffee with him.

  • @Ven1EdCox John Harrington

  • @jrmrinaz sorry John HERINGTON

  • Of all of Steely Dan's tunes, this, BY FAR, was their best. Besides, my favorite aunt is named PEG; Very appropriate.

  • Every musician of any standing wanted this gig when they heard Steely Dan was going to do live shows. They were in a unique position to be able to pick the creme of the creme. There isn't a better line on a musicians resume than to claim you played with Steely Dan.

  • lou reed on guitar

  • wow saw then 3 months ago....best concert ever!!!! they rock!!!!!!

  • Fabio Capello on rhythm guitar.

  • @Ven1EdCox Jon Herington

  • @jdp201eliz<----------- talk to a therapist little man

  • I was told Steely Dan toured with Chicago or the other way around in the 70s, if so that must have been a great show to see.

  • @WavyGravyTrain1

I saw Steelt Dan with theDoobie Brothers and Loggins and Messina in 1 show. that show rocked!!1

  • Is there any contemporary band i.e. not originating from the 1970s who could do this? No. Why? Cos they're all pop stars first, musicians second. SD are total class - always were.

  • best band ever that i neverr saw live

  • Dont mess with chuck rainey meng... Recorded for marvin gaye and quincy jones also and others..

  • Yea, I misspoke. I realized after I posted that Chuck Rainey played on Peg, although Wilton Felder did play bass on the album.

  • I can't believe the bass player was slapping. It sounded like the Seinfeld show intro song. Don must have flipped out on him after the set. He hates slap bassing, as do I.

  • @davidt5764 Chuck Rainy slapped it in the chorus with his back to Donald in the studio, that's the right part

  • @76alembic I just listened to the original to compare and you're right, although the sound is really mellow compared to this. They toned it down so much in the edit that I never noticed. Plus I'm not a bassist.

  • The original bassist on the album was jazz saxophonist Wilton Felder. This guy comes close, though and the guitar solo hear was DEADLY!!!!

  • @eldercurt53 the bassist on the album was chuck rainey..

  • THE GUITAR SOLO IS NICE BUT THE BASSIST KILLS THIS SONG .

  • Every musician on this is flawless. Although, how could you possibly expect less from Steely Dan? Amazing!!!!

  • years ahead of their time....... pure genius !!!!

  • Jon Herington - a brilliant guitar representative!

  • Yeah, John Herrington took the Jay Greydon solo from the studio up a notch.

Pretty tough to do live. Of course the really, really good ones make it look so easy!

  • CLASS

  • Was that Brian Wilson on the trombone?

  • that bass player is one funky dude, but but i guess when your playin with walter becker youve gotta have your a,, game on. either go hard or go home. true legends of music alryt

  • thank th top of the brb for that

  • Fagan looks like he is having a seizure at 4:02

  • Is this available to buy or download anywhere. Don't need the images, just the music. Best version ever IMHO. Jon Herrington is da man.

  • Wow. Cool how he turned the solo from the LP inside out and sideways. The triad licks, bends, scale chunks are all in the same order and style as the original, yet with different note choices. Way to be respectful, yet original. Very nice.

  • Folding cash says the guitarist had to nail the "Peg" solo to get this gig...

  • fuck yeah!!!

  • What is them at their best AV ?

  • Great memories from '78. And you wonder why people keep going back to 70's and 80's music. PEG is a great example!! Great songs and bands are timeless!!

  • gotta love Donald's attire.

  • This isn't even them at their best, and it's STILL GREAT!

  • please...larry carlton...

  • This is one jukin band! I've always been a fan.

  • Musical Perfection.

  • Super!

  • I have a confession to make. When I was a teenager I hated Steely Dan. I'm 31 now and theyre one of my all time faves. Just goes to show how you can mature musically.

  • Comment removed

  • @Danzigrules1 Well I guess they are sort of an acquired taste. But once you get them there is no turning back

  • @Danzigrules1

I know what you mean! I'm 29 and I could stand my parent's music when I was a kid. Now that's all I listen to!

  • @Danzigrules1 Then you have me who has liked Steely Dan since 18 years old or so. I'm 21 now and consider them one of my favorite bands. I started appreciating more music after I tried playing guitar and bass and seeing just how much work is involved in making music and making it sound so good at least to most peoples ears. I still play bass but am by no means great.

  • I have a confession to make. When I was a teenager I hated Steely Dan. I'm 31 now and theyre one of my all time faves. Just goes to show how you can ature musically.

  • great rythym section, great horns, great singers great guitars, well thats all of em'.

  • I've run out of superlatives to say about these guys. They're just awesome!

  • love that plucking bass!!

  • original was larry carlton

  • @TheIrishlad12 Jay Graydon played the "Peg" solo on Aja. He was the original.

  • These guys ARE THE BEST.......BAR NONE !!!

  • Seeing these guys tonight in Cincy. Can't wait! Love 'em:)

  • Jon Herrington Is a Guitar God, not and Improvised solo BTW

  • @RCRhythm Oh noes! The Bieber fever has spread to your brain! Quarantine yourself before you make others sick!

  • @GoGoGadgetBeer Lol... "Go, go Gadget Bieberizer!"

  • @RCRhythm He does.

  • Advanced music lesson .. Love it ..

  • Who is the guitarist? He is wonderful!

  • how the fuck do you improvise a guitar solo like that

  • @tuckah4545 I guess it's by knowing all your theory.

  • @tuckah4545 Exactly! Amazing guitar solo. Well, these cats were very well-versed in all the major improvisational artists of their time--Hendrix, Miles Davis, etc--and it shows. The deeper your foundations, in music and all arts, the higher you'll climb. Every one in this band, drop of a hat, could play anything from the Great American songbook or classic rock or jazz fusion or hard bop or the blues. These cats were schooled.

  • @tuckah4545 If you want improvisation, plug this one in...: Steely Dan Live 1996 at Manassas 22/23: My Old School. That's how it's done.

  • @tuckah4545 - Much talent and LOTS of practice. I'm sure he's glad NOW that he took those lessons as a kid.

  • @tuckah4545 Easy.... become a virtuoso like Walter Becker...

  • @iceyteemo Becker doesn't play the solo in this video

  • @tuckah4545 Apparently you don't watch a lot of Phish videos on here. Nothing against Jon, but Trey's improv runs circles around that. That being said, great song and great band.

  • @blacha222 trey's a great musician and guitarist, i dont understand how he does it either. guess its just his natural style

  • @tuckah4545 Scales, scales, scales and more scales.

  • @tuckah4545

Knowing your scales and modes ;)

  • @tuckah4545 a SOLID base of theory and practice. oh, and a heaping gob of talent. lol. this band has amazed me from the moment I first saw them.

  • @tuckah4545 Chuck Garvey and Al Schnier do it every moe. concert I go to.

  • To save any confusion and for the record, Jay Graydon played the solo on the original recording (not Larry Carlton)

Check our Jon Herington's solo album (called "Like So") - easy to see why B&F rate him so highly

    A BIG DAN FAN

  • The black ladies ruined the song. Michael McDonald FTW!!!

  • I love Herington's playing and he is perfect for Steely but I wish they would do a tour with Denny Dias. He is so underrated and it would be amazing to see him up there with them all these years later. He deserves it!

  • @tyleryesta1 I'd love to see all the original studio guys who laid down the original tracks. Could you imagine Larry Carlton, Jay Graydon, Denny Dias, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Hugh McCracken, Lee Ritenour, Elliot Randall, Wilton Felder all on the same stage!?!...I know I'm forgetting somebody but Geez! THAT would be a killer tour!

  • That guitar solo rocked

  • @cyborjaunt It sounded very Larry Carlton. Twas great though, no disputing that.

  • So awesome!

I still recall the first time that I ever heard SD when I was about 16 at school (thanks to Mr Hapgood!).

Just got tix to see them live in NZ in November (about 27 years later!) and soooo looking forward to it!

  • great guitar solo

  • I heard this song as a child of 7 or so and remember getting chills from it. Even then I knew the Dan had mad skills. Lucky for us they are still at it ;)

  • I see 22 people didn't like this - I wonder if they were Oasis fans - doesn't matter this is wonderful and one of my favourite records.

  • Anyone know if this is off a dvd and where I can get a copy?

  • When it was originally recorded it used a synthesizer instead of actual horns. It's actually good that they decided to utilize horns instead of a synthesizer because it seems so natural.

  • Saw them in the old Orlando Arena- sweeet

  • Herrington is such a smart, classy guitar player!

  • Badass DONALD FAGAN! Sing it babyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!

  • Dude, what the hell did you do to this video?

the water ripples and pasted on squares of tree silhouettes make the whole thing way too tacky.

Would be great if you could post an unedited version.

  • It just does not get any better than the Legendary Steely Dan!

    Rich

  • Is there a good, no, great live dvd out for Steely Dan?

  • tom barney bass is snappy yeah!

  • could it get any better?

  • Some of the best music, I've ever seen... And heard.

  • 21 persons opened this page by accident.

  • ahh great song.

  • As with a lot of SD songs, I don't quite understand what this song is REALLY about. The "foreign movie" line really throws me. And "what comes back" to Peg? HELP!

  • @NellsStuff I've always been told it's about a porn star. you're right, their lyrics are like riddles.

  • god, I love steely dan.

  • 20 people don't like foreign movies

  • LMAO!!!

  • sick guitar solo!

  • My ten year old likes a lot of my old music, but her tastes are not yet sophisticated and broad enough for the harmonies that Steely Dan puts down. Awesome.

  • Not the same with out Michael McDonald

  • is that Larry Carlton along with Walter Becker????

  • @realdocphil It's Jon Herington. Dude's a beast!

  • Amazing song! Not too sure about the first solo but the end one was awesome

  • The song Peg...just Popped in my mind out of no-where today...and I had to hear it..so....youtube to the rescue!!! Steely Dan is one of my all time favorite groups!!

  • Adore this <3

  • Ounce again....Another fine peformance.....This whole band is Wicked good.....Mr. Dan is One to be respected......Musicly....

  • They are jammin and the background singers are killin!!! Love it!!!!

  • this makes me sick - forget about the economy, popular music today has absolutely collapsed from its heights (this song)

  • always great

  • Pretty Jammin, everything spot on.

  • Such an amazing song. WHAT A GUITAR SOLO!!!

  • Man, what a guitar solo! I dig the studio version a lot too, but this one just simply kicks ass too!

  • Aja was a great album!

  • Go Jon, go!!!!! As good as Larry Carlton's leads! Just as unique, just as shiver-delivering as L.C.!!! Love it!

  • classic gem from a masterpiece-album!

  • Never gets old....Fagen, Beatles & Marley top 3 all time.

  • The guitar-solo is the icing on the cake on this song.. and he's fluffed it..

  • Looks like Keith Carlock on drums... anyone know for sure?

  • @BigLicker76 yeah, it is

  • Michael Mcdonald was a great backup singer for them. This is how music should be played. Crisp, clean and on just plain sweet......

  • I love this...but-er-ah I keep wanting to hear Michael McDonald do all the background parts again!

  • : ) Love Steely Dan!! The Best!! Everything loops, circles; "comes back to you".

  • ah 2nd class artists for the culturally handicapped! how nice and "corrected"...

  • Steely God, err Godly Dan...

  • Yes- a little quote from Buzz Feiten at the end of Jon's "cut and paste" solo...check the live shows guitarist Drew Zingg did with the Steelies in 1993 ish..he borrows whole solos from Buzz Feiten

  • The Dan --no time to read all about all peoples hum ------what a great song and band --thank you

  • These guys are incredible ! I have seen them twice damnn these guys put on a great show... Take notes youngsters this is how it is done!

  • that's the guy from royal oak michigan the jewish dude

  • Herington is God!

    Super Player

  • Nice work from Jon herrington there .. did I hear a little Buzz Feiten lick there in your decending run Jon ?

  • My Account Name Is Yours!..out here it's tragic..Margeret..Rebecca..Very Cool!

  • steely dan isnt a band because of me, IM A WHORE AND DONT DESSERVE A BAND'S ATTENTION, EAGLES ARE STUPID

  • holy shit that guitarist is amazing

  • An acquaintance said to me that Steely Dan were just a "flash in the pan" and that was around 1974. This isn't my favourite track but it is nevertheless what had to happen. Lovely solo.

  • One of the best song from Steely Dan. 30 yrs after they still rip off. Donald Fagen still sings very well,...and the tune's climate really didn't get old....I'm truly amazed!!!!

  • My Favorite song by Steely Dan!!!!! So much soul!!!!!

  • Comparing Steely Dan's music to some of the stuff out there now is like comparing a Porsche to a Yugo. They sound better now then the lip synching, pretend pop stars ever will.

  • The lawn's too long, the carpet is dusty, the dishes are stacked on the bench and my wife is lonely...but I can't bring myself to stop listening to Steely Dan!! lol. I've bought everything they've released twice over...1st in vinyl starting when I was 17yo then on disc and I consider it was all an absolute bargain.

My 15yo son plays bass and is discovering SD for himself now. Thankyou God and the lesser gods named Fagen and Becker!!

  • hey, I have this friend named April, and she's totally down with Steely D!

  • The ALL TIME GREATEST GROUP OF TALENTED MUSICIANS THAT i HAVE EVER LISTENED TO! Going back to the late 70's! This was the first song i listened to by these men & I've been a TRUE FAN ever since!!! Love You Men!!!

  • Me and Justin Bebeer tagged that one singer!

  • who did fagen write peg about

  • @FREDDEL44 your mother who Fagen used to do DP's with "Skunk" Baxter in the early seventies.

  • Donald Fagen is actually unglier than Count Dracula.

  • @yourdickis2limp or Count Choc-ula

  • What a smart guitar solo. Good player. And a pretty good band too. lol

  • Larry Carlton Room 335 :))))))))))))

  • 16 people have never been Pegged by the Dan.

  • I'd give an arm and a leg to c Steely Dan playing at Congo Square, Dalhousie Institute, Kolkata

  • Peachy went south for the weekend

  • Wile E. Coyote's

  • a bunch of GENIUSES!
