I'm not sure what you've read. It is an atomistic simulation, where each cylinder corresponds the nearest-neighbor interaction between silicon atoms. Silicon atom itself is indicated with blue spheres but hardly seen by bad resolution, sorry.

heh im not getting whats going here but i read many interesting things about liquid silicon, is it the same thing?
