@lambcannon I'm not sure if she was a lesbian icon, but she did it for me! She married Keith Tippett so a bit of a disappointment to those of us of both sexes who were waiting in vain!
I remember this when I was a child too. It made a lasting impression on me then and I still love it now. Those were the best times, I'm so glad I grew up in that era.
@eamonosu "i remember watching this on top of the pops back in 1965, believe it or not."
I do not--it was written by Bob Dylan and Rick Danko in 1967, and released on The Band's "Music From Big Pink" in 1968--the same year as this performance on Top of the Pops.

It is 2010. It doesn't matter how long ago- you can';t put a great song down. I have totally loved this song since I was a teenager. This version, it's intensity, it's melody, it's drama, its vocal delivery and it's musicianship is simply an absolute gem of pop music/rock music at its best. Bloody awesome!
@vonpork In the U.S. it was on the Atco label - that original 45 like Itchycoo park-Small Faces, and the Arbors-The Letter still give me chills. Classics like these and Time of the Season-Zombies of the 60's and 70's will still be relevant another 40 or more years from now!
for quite a while the bands sang live on TOTP over a recorded backing, given the lack of monitors and one off performance (not expecting to be on you tube 42 years later) i think a great job
I totally love everything about this, from Julie's haircut, to the bum vocal notes, but this is after all a song for a wailing Banshee not Celine Dion,
A live vocal..... unusual for TOTP....loved the Mellotron sound on this .....mind blowing at the time...pop records were beginning to sound more sophisticated around this time
That's Simon Dee at the head of this clip. He was a DJ/ tv presenter who fronted many of the periods best chat shows His career was brilliant and sadly short lived.
Thanks for posting this. I remember loving the record at the time....especially to a young child it was mysterious and haunting. It took me another 7 years before I started to get into Dylan and know what it was all about...
Doesn't Julie sound a lot like Dusty Springfield? I didn't realize how much at the time.
@glamfakir She sounds, and looks, like she predates Annie Lennox, which makes me wonder how much she was influenced by her. There's now a line of R&B influenced U.K. singers from Julie Driscoll to Lennox to Joss Stone and Duffy.
Julie was the 60s , no doubt about it Groovy ,,,,,

Oh, shit... At the best part (the Hammond solo of Brian Auger), the broadcasting was cutted.
On 17 Apr.2011 I had the privilege to see Mr. Auger live on Virada Cultural, São Paulo (a free outdoor show @ Largo de São Bento).

Julie sang this with Ade Edmondson as the theme to Ab Fab.

as 'wheels on fire' comes in, the drop in key is so sweet, then the triple lift in key- gorgeous.
