The popular belief at the moment is he was shot by the Australian machine gun crew, but the truth is we shall never know for sure, and more importantly it does not matter.
@mckessa17 No one argues any one man's prowess in combat except the greatest. As they have the Barons for years. No one would have liked to fight the Baron.
@Carjos07 I would have liked to have seen the Baron fight Bishop, Barker or Collishaw instead of observation planes like the obsolete BE2, history would have been very different.
@mckessa17 Observation planes? The Red Baron did not only fight observation planes. So don't keep your pride so high in Canada. Roy Brown A fought the baron when he was mentally incapable of rational thought with the trauma to his head at the time B the baron fought low alttitude in enemy territory being shot at by more than one gunner and C. It is STILL debated weither or not he actually shot him. AND the only one that may have an advantage in fighting the baron is Collishaw with his plane.
I think the parachutes available in WWI were static line deployed, because nobody knew the effects of preimpact freefall on a seperated aviator. That S/L could have been a vulnerable link. I believe they might have been designed more for balloons.
Yes, for years they debated the truth but the modern investigation pretty much nails the coffin - the ground fire killed him and the man who fired the shot died shortly after the war from natural causes. Almost nothing is known about him.
He was shot, during a dogfight, by an Australian AA machine gunner from the ground. He was hit through the chest with a single bullet that damaged his lungs and heart. Even so, he managed to land his plane on a field and subsequently died a few minuttes later in the presence of australian soldiers, who had rushed to the landingsite. According to wikipedia his last words where "Kaputt" which means "finnished" or "broken" in german. His aircraft was stripped to peices by souvenir- opportunitists.
I think this is the footage (the main part, not the beginning showing the D.VIIs, as tribegoddess points out) shot in the autumn of 1917 by none other than than Anthony Fokker, designer of the triplane that von Richthofen is preparing to fly. (This was a prototype model F.I [Nr. 102/17, if anyone cares ;) ], not the version later mass-produced as the Dr.I.) The Baron was returning to duty after recovering from a head wound; you can just see a bit of white bandage under his headgear.
The first part of the film shows D VIIs. The first D VIIs came operational after the Baron's death. Had he lived, he would have received the first one.
basenjib123 is right Baron was brought down by Cedric Popkins.(Aussies rule in this regard!! ;) )
The rest of the Elite Pilots as usual tried to hog the limelight by chivalrously stating that ".. the evidence is already out there". That's the worst part of human tendencies ...to prove supremacy. The pilots strutted about as if the infantry was just sleeping in the barracks. Just coz they fly high doesnt mean that infantry is dumb. I'd say infantry kicks ass any day.
@basenjib123 According to a documentary I once watched on the Discovery Channel, that's exactly what happened. They used laser beams and other techy stuff to reproduce the last moments of his life. It was a very nice documentary that I never came across again.
Roy Brown did not shoot down (or an Australian gunner did make the fatal shot on) Richtofen. It's been debated and disputed for a long time. I've read quite a bit and even respected preople like Dan San Abbott and Driscoll don't agree. Killduff has done a lot of Red Baron work, I wonder his opinion? The Red Baron certainly STILL captures the imagination. A legend.

Hi Phatt,
Yes it is. That is why I posted it. I used to have WW 1 air craft all over my ceiling as a kid.
The baron's plane was one of them.
