@jerneste It's hard to translate poetry 1:1, but the song goes about like that : A young girl is picking marsh mallows in the garden, and as she falls asleep as she's picking the flowers. A young man comes, sees her and tells her "Wake up, young girl, wake up, stop sleeping. The flowers you've picked are dying and getting dry. Your boy has engaged and is going to get married". She answers "May he get married. I forgive him".
@jerneste In the old times when a girl and a boy fall in love they make promise to keep that love forever - as a symbol of that promise the girl would give the boy the little bouquet that adorns her head and the boy would treasure it. When such promise is broken, just like nowadays, the one that's lied to would be sorrowful and sad. The girl in the song probably knows that her boy has lied to her and is picking flowers to adorn her head again. It's a sad song.
