  • a gentleman

  • Wheres the groove....

  • inspiring:)

  • Big nose=Big skills :P

  • One of the greatest, and more creative bass players ever born!

  • blows my mind, anything the does!

  • SCREETCH!!!!!

  • if they make another stargate movie, they should feature this guy as some alien musician from an exotic planet in another galaxy. cuz his music is sure as heck COSMIC!!!!

  • amazing use of dynamics

  • Truly amazing, so complex and so rockin!

  • damn i wish i could have michael manring play in my basement

  • Yeah but you couldn't whistle it could you?

  • Piezoelectric pickups are made of a special material that converts mechanical vibration or force into a weak electrical signal, which can then be amplified. Any material that outputs an electrical signal when it recieves any mechanical force is said to have piezoelectric properties. The Ashton-Thornbory bass also makes good use of piezo pickups; because the scale length is only 18 inches, it uses super-low-tension silicone strings, which won't trigger electromagnetic pickups.

  • He's a crazy motherfucker. One of the few fretless player who can play in a very different way from jaco's stuff.

    Really a good musician

  • ironically, he learned a lot of his bass playing from jaco.

  • he only had a few lessons from jaco from what i read....but i think all bass players learned from jaco

  • It seems strange that the pick-ups actually pick the noise from him hitting the body. Anyone care to explain how for me?

  • The Zon Hyperbass has piezoelectric pickups in the body and in the neck.

  • So the fact that they're piezo allows them to pick up vibrations other then those in metal?

  • What he's saying is that it has four pickups that are designed specifically to pickup the vibrations in the guitar itself, completely seperate from the humbucker for the strings.

  • its the way he designed the bass. i dont remember why, but he had explained it in a video once.

  • @connorbassplayer - He didn't design it. He told Zon what he wanted and thats what they came up with.

  • the music is of his own world ......lol

  • cool tune. anyone know the story behind the name?

  • This song makes me shit. in a good way.

  • He should just release it as a single so I can put it on my iTunes and I don't have to keep going back to youtube. THis is like his best song. definitely best tone too.

  • Download it using aTube, bro.

  • i wish i could have his bass..but in not worthy

    ...:(

  • I wish I could have his hairstyle and jeans. Then I would get so much ass.

  • Very Inspiring!!!

  • this guys is amazing, he levels the bass to acomplete different lvl. I think that what this guy does to bass nobody did in any other instrument, its transcendent..

  • @ftfrito

Try Michael Hedges on the guitar. Hedges and Manring were good friends in fact, and even collaborated and toured together. When they met, they realized they really had the same sort of ideas about where they want to take their music and shared influences/tastes even. Check Michael Hedges out, he's amazing.

  • Ok, so piezo pickups in the body and head. here's what i don't understand: How he slaps and taps on the body without the strings vibrating and/or getting picked up by his regular pickup. Anyone?

  • just cause he uses the bass in a totally different way doesnt mean its bullshit

  • what a master...

  • fretless bass master!

  • He is the best bassist in the world, no questions asked

  • At the very least, he is the finest solo bass player around.

  • Vic Wooten?

  • I love Wooten and have a few of his CDs but when you listen to a few Manring albums against Wooten ones you find that Manring has more interesting, melodic and inventive solo tunes.

Wooten can without a doubt play faster than Manring, has amazing groove and is brilliant in a band context but he just doesn't have the same beauty and musicality Manring can have in his solo pieces. This tune is not the best example of Manring's solo pieces though ha ha! Get a hold of Thonk and Drastic Measures!

  • Ok, katanamanatee, I googled "Thonk and Drastic Measures" and got exactly 6 hits :S... I'm not just trying to download it for free, but there's no way to buy this online it seems :S... This guy is really not famous enough.

  • Thonk and Drastic Measures are two separate albums genius, no wonder your not getting much hits when you search for "Thonk and Drastic Measures"

  • OWNED !!!

  • I must say... I'd be so intimidated playing with a guy like this... he's nuts. Michael Manring is my favorite bassist thus far.. if i find some one better, doubtful, I'll be amazed.

  • is this bass semi acoustic?

  • No but there are three piezo pickups in the body and one in the headstock that are picking up all that percussive stuff.

  • If they're in the body and head they're probably mini-mics instead of pickups..

  • Piezo transducers. They are basically accelerometers. They pick up vibrations.

  • I love manring but this is terrible

  • he goes so out of time

  • Oh yeah Michael really sucks. I'm sure he just screwed up big time and wasn't doing anything beyond your ability to comprehend.

  • is it just me or is he kinda wierd? lol good thoe

  • I got the privlage of having a lesson with this legend, his skills are unparalleled and he is the most down-to-earth musican, I also got to hold that exravagant bass that he is playing!

  • very jealous.

there's probably like no way to do that now. lol

  • Cool! Did you tried it?

  • Michael Manring en Masterclass à Lille le 28 Mai 2008 avec l'école Bass'Cool

  • Astounding player, deeply musical and expressive with all this unbelievable technical ability on top of it. I would like to see him playing with Victor Wooten as they share a lot of techniques in common and both are deadly solo bassists. I am glad to hear he is as nice a person as he is a great musician. I hope I get to meet him some day. He is the living legacy of Jaco with whom he studied.

  • Vaya tio mas colgao, tocando notas totalmente desafinadas y disonantes.

  • when I see his face, why do I think muppets, or sesame street or something like that? Incredible bassist though!

  • Kind of looks like Geddy Lee. Did I just say that Geddy Lee kinda looks like a muppet?

  • yeah thats a good explination. there both sick though

  • i can't believe it!!!..he's a freakin` creative guy!!!Simple but yet complicated!

  • What album is this on?

  • Michael hasn't created an album that he feels is appropriate for this song, so this is the only recording of it so far.

  • Actually there is a studio version of this song, it was on a sampler disc that came with D'Addario strings a couple years back and it's much better than this version.

  • 1:37 his machine head moved, is it supposed to??

  • Yes. He uses Hipshot detuner keys on his basses so he can retune multiple times during songs.

  • Aah I see, thanks :-)

  • dissonant and oddly arranged... best thing since Steve Howes "Meadow rag"

  • im sorry...thats a lot of unnecessary IN MA OPINION. A lot of his other songs are great though.

  • That bass is a Zon "Ultrabass" or something like that. I'm actually not the biggest fan of Manring, even though he is amazing.

  • It's called the Hyperbass.

    Want one?

    That'll be $5k+ please...defo not for the faint-pocketed.

  • manring the manthing thats great ;)

  • He's so good but half the song I was sitting here like, "Play the fucking bass!"

  • huh?!

what would you call "playing the bass" then?

  • as in: "do what i've heard before."

  • Its strange, but i dig the idea. i like that bass too, looks really slick.

  • has anyone noticed how cheeeeezey this is?

  • dumbass I think your full o' cheese

  • Why does he keep adjusting the machine heads, or is that even what he's doing?

  • constantly tuning to other keys

  • He has Hipshot Xtenderz, They drop/raise the string tension, in other words, changing his tuning with a flick of a switch.

  • How is he making that percussive tapping sound on the body of the bass amplified enough to hear??? Does he have a special pick-up for that????

  • Michael's Original Hyperbass has 4 transducers; one in the top horn, the bottom horn, the top of the body, and one by the nut.

  • He has a Piezo Mic inside the body

  • i appreciate his talent but i just can't dig it. give me Edwards, Zender or Jackson any day...

  • i love how its like really badly out of tune, just that main riff. its crazy good

  • It's not out of tune... =X The word is avant-garde or dissonant?

  • sounds very strange O.o

  • Now that is a sharp sounding fretless.

  • nice

  • What's that good in what hes doing? i just don't understand...?

  • Pushing the boundaries of the instrument, and of music, further all the time. Incredible musician.

  • then you should quit making music, if you even do

  • I'd like to see what he'd do on an upright

  • actually i read he's not very good on one anymore. i guess he played for a bit but lost he "chops" for it. but not necessary anyways. manrings strong point is the electric bass. no one does it like him.

  • god damn! michael manring is a genius

  • Michael! Thanks for coming to Virginia! And you were kind and patient enough to sign both my book and my copy of Soliloquy! And you even took a picture with me! I hope to see you again!

Awesome performance of Selene and Helios! All bow down to the Manthing

  • really amazing i just dont like his stuff

  • probably because you haven't heard enough of it to know what "his music" really is.

  • yea he is awesome and a nice guy to chill with

  • the most amazing, creative bassist i have ever heard!!

  • Man... I would love to see Michael and Gary Willis do something together.... Michael rocks...

  • I wonder whose basement hes playing out of?

  • Manring is so great ! I love him so much !

  • wow, i bought some strings a while back that came with a cd and this was one of the songs. Pretty sweet to see him play it.
