if they make another stargate movie, they should feature this guy as some alien musician from an exotic planet in another galaxy. cuz his music is sure as heck COSMIC!!!!
Piezoelectric pickups are made of a special material that converts mechanical vibration or force into a weak electrical signal, which can then be amplified. Any material that outputs an electrical signal when it recieves any mechanical force is said to have piezoelectric properties. The Ashton-Thornbory bass also makes good use of piezo pickups; because the scale length is only 18 inches, it uses super-low-tension silicone strings, which won't trigger electromagnetic pickups.
What he's saying is that it has four pickups that are designed specifically to pickup the vibrations in the guitar itself, completely seperate from the humbucker for the strings.
He should just release it as a single so I can put it on my iTunes and I don't have to keep going back to youtube. THis is like his best song. definitely best tone too.
this guys is amazing, he levels the bass to acomplete different lvl. I think that what this guy does to bass nobody did in any other instrument, its transcendent..
Try Michael Hedges on the guitar. Hedges and Manring were good friends in fact, and even collaborated and toured together. When they met, they realized they really had the same sort of ideas about where they want to take their music and shared influences/tastes even. Check Michael Hedges out, he's amazing.
Ok, so piezo pickups in the body and head. here's what i don't understand: How he slaps and taps on the body without the strings vibrating and/or getting picked up by his regular pickup. Anyone?
I love Wooten and have a few of his CDs but when you listen to a few Manring albums against Wooten ones you find that Manring has more interesting, melodic and inventive solo tunes.
Wooten can without a doubt play faster than Manring, has amazing groove and is brilliant in a band context but he just doesn't have the same beauty and musicality Manring can have in his solo pieces. This tune is not the best example of Manring's solo pieces though ha ha! Get a hold of Thonk and Drastic Measures!
Ok, katanamanatee, I googled "Thonk and Drastic Measures" and got exactly 6 hits :S... I'm not just trying to download it for free, but there's no way to buy this online it seems :S... This guy is really not famous enough.
I must say... I'd be so intimidated playing with a guy like this... he's nuts. Michael Manring is my favorite bassist thus far.. if i find some one better, doubtful, I'll be amazed.
I got the privlage of having a lesson with this legend, his skills are unparalleled and he is the most down-to-earth musican, I also got to hold that exravagant bass that he is playing!
Astounding player, deeply musical and expressive with all this unbelievable technical ability on top of it. I would like to see him playing with Victor Wooten as they share a lot of techniques in common and both are deadly solo bassists. I am glad to hear he is as nice a person as he is a great musician. I hope I get to meet him some day. He is the living legacy of Jaco with whom he studied.
Actually there is a studio version of this song, it was on a sampler disc that came with D'Addario strings a couple years back and it's much better than this version.
actually i read he's not very good on one anymore. i guess he played for a bit but lost he "chops" for it. but not necessary anyways. manrings strong point is the electric bass. no one does it like him.
Michael! Thanks for coming to Virginia! And you were kind and patient enough to sign both my book and my copy of Soliloquy! And you even took a picture with me! I hope to see you again!

It seems strange that the pick-ups actually pick the noise from him hitting the body. Anyone care to explain how for me?
LokiNTB 2 years ago
The Zon Hyperbass has piezoelectric pickups in the body and in the neck.
wattmeter 2 years ago 2
So the fact that they're piezo allows them to pick up vibrations other then those in metal?
LokiNTB 2 years ago 2
What he's saying is that it has four pickups that are designed specifically to pickup the vibrations in the guitar itself, completely seperate from the humbucker for the strings.
fredmalito4 2 years ago
its the way he designed the bass. i dont remember why, but he had explained it in a video once.
connorbassplayer 2 years ago
@connorbassplayer - He didn't design it. He told Zon what he wanted and thats what they came up with.

is this bass semi acoustic?
xenotoxette 3 years ago
No but there are three piezo pickups in the body and one in the headstock that are picking up all that percussive stuff.
yovicta34 3 years ago
If they're in the body and head they're probably mini-mics instead of pickups..
xenotoxette 3 years ago
Piezo transducers. They are basically accelerometers. They pick up vibrations.
