I wish, if you visit this video again (although it was posted 4 years ago) that you would share with us what paper you use. Charcoal so far is my favorite drawing medium, but I'm just a beginner. I'm having trouble finding a paper support that satisfies me. I started out on newsprint and I keep going back to it because that's the only surface I've found so far that I like. But it's not archival. What do you suggest?
at 4:24 it's pretty obvious her face is too chubby, too wide by a whopping 10-12%, if you compare the width / height ratio.
also at 8:45 the guy's face seems a bit too wide as well, and the afro hair is not tall enough, the shape is too rounded in the portrait, compared to what the model has.
in any case these are very useful portrait videos, it always helps to hear about other people's thought process as they're drawing :)
Mr. Haverly, you are amazing at what you do and are a definite inspiration! And thank you for having a kind, fun personality to match.
One question, what brand paper do you use? And since vine charcoal has a tendency to dissapate easier than other charcoal, how do you compensate for that?
I would love to hear your answers....thank you again.
I really like the artist pays so much respect to simple tool-pencil and paper. Drawing really show the sprit inside. I have been painting on photoshop and trying to get back to the pencil works.
Lon! i just uploaded a video of some of my A level art peices. I really enjoyed your video and i had it in my mind when i drew. I would really appreciate it if you could leave a comment.
Lon, Can you tell me please how white your paper is? At the moment I am using very white cartridge paper with willow charcoal and I am getting very grey miserable portraits. Does vine charcoal make it more brown or is it your paper? I live in the UK and I don't seem to be able to get vine charcoal, but I would if you think it would make a difference. I would love to be a street portrait artist but getting these grey portraits is soul destroying. Thanks for your last answer.
@AnimaLiNstinct625 Hey, it's been a year, ever done any portraits in the meantime?
I've also just started out strong, and made a few videos about my experiences. It is TOTALLY worth it, I recommend getting any sorts of drawing class you can, show up there, and start dedicating some regular time to this. In the past 10 days (5h / day) I've learned more about art& portraits than my whole life combined :)
I like these videos a lot. i am mostly a pencil artist. The one thing I didn't like was that for the shading it was edited for clip and it did not show how the shading was done and to me that is my most difficult issue. Other than that thank you and keep posting
I wasn't meaning it like that you are a really great artist I was just saying it was kinda of boring for my taste. And I really ment thank you about the lecture. I learned new things that I didn't know before. Sorry if I offended you.
Haha..that said, I see I need to work on my grammer, but all in all..keep at it..videos liek these really help. I personally find drawing the human face, and getting it to have an actual likeness to a real person, to be one of the most difficult things to master.
It's strange how most humans as we grow, develop our writing, our speech, or motor skills, our ability to see and hear exponentially, yet as my sister once said "most adults seem to still draw at literally a grade 1 level?" And it's true of most ppl it seems. Bother her (she's a lawyer now) and myself (aspiring artist) have above average drawing skills I'd say...but for the life of me, I have no idea why. I've practiced over my lifetime, but ppl said i could draw since age 5. Strange...

It's supposed to look less than real. That's part of the fun of drawing... You get to exercise your own interpretation.

I'm surprised Lon even gives the offensive comments the time of day. If I were a man of his talent and reputation, I wouldn't bother.
Lon, I've said it a dozen times already, but you have truly inspired me to try portrait art for the first time!
Now if only I could get a live lesson for any questions I have!
What is your opinion on white charcoal?
AnimaLiNstinct625 3 years ago
Never hoid of it.
The negative comments are rather amusing to me. I think they also generate interest in my videos.

You were not forced to watch, I don't believe, nor were you charged anything. At least you thanked me after you insulted me.

i believe people are born knowing how to draw and those that are not art classes wont help them unless they are serious about pursuing it
kasumisman 4 years ago
Well, were you born to write? No. You had to be taught. Otherwise, you would be hopelessly illiterate.
lonhaverly 4 years ago
well u got me there lol but its just what i believe cuz ive been drawing since i was 5

i first got into drawing after i saw an episode of "the joy of painting" when i was in kindergarten.

i think that just like ppl are born with different levels of iq's den ppl are born and blessed with different levels of art ability

How do we know who is or isnt born to draw unless we give them the fundamentals? We would have no mathemeticians unless we taught arithmatic. No
