I wanted to add that I like the little music hook at the end with the animated berries dingling in tune. Advertisers were creative and clever back then. Todays commercials are just annoying.
This is a good gum. I use to chew it all the time. I might have to pick some up. When TVLand first started, they showed this as a retromercial. My Mom instantly remembered it from her childhood. It's a timeless classic.
Heavens to Murgatroid! I have so many fond memories of seeing this fun commerical on TV as a kid in the 60's! THANKS a lot for posting it! You've MADE my day & my weekend! :)
You can get this in the Boston area and in Rhode Island and Southeastern MA if you go to the Newbury Comics CD store chain. They sell all those Clark gum products right up near the register - Blackjack, Teaberry, Beeman's (the wintergreen gum).
@timdub70 Back then, the league penalizing and fining that guy would have been the LEAST of his worries after getting his ears yelled off by the coach.
Somewhere in my deepest memory, I can remember that commercial. I couldn't have been more that three or four when it was out. It might have just been the music.
@amuslima99 Actually the chronolgy is important here... it was this advert in '63 that in fact rejuvenated and gave Alpert sustainability by allowing the South of the Border album to become a hit - otherwise he would have been a "one hit wonder" with "The Lonely Bull" in '62. It was then that the momentum really began to flow and the follow up albums "whipped cream" , "going places" and "what now my love" and "SRO"in '64 - '65 - '66 is when he hit peak popularity.
Thanks. Growing up in the north country we had actual wintergreen berries and stems and they taste very different from the flavour that they get from the oil. I had always imagined that this gum would taste more like the genuine article.

sometimes i hate white people, as a group, when i think of the horrible racism us black people endured during that time in the 1960's...while whites were having fun
"them"? Oh, u must mean i'm no better than racists like YOU, judging by all the evil things on your profile. And, as i said, that is something i feel only sometimes, and i am aware of it because it contrasts greatly with my usual love for all people, which is something i know that u can't relate to.
You come here bitching about white folks "as a group," then call ME a racist for calling you out. You're an asshole, just like all the race-baiters like you. I bet you're an Al Sharpton fan.
Evil things on my profile? My profile is BLANK, you fucking moron.
logic would tell me that if i was a racist that needed a kidney transplant, i would repent my evil ways and try to become a good person, in order that i may be worthy of God's help...but i see from all available evidence that u have chosen to continue your evil...sad.
@bigleroygym the fuck are you talking about this is just a gum comercial why do you feel the need to change the subject to racism. im white and i admit i some times hate white people but seiriously man.also what is all this evil stuff about
@bigleroygym That's too funny. If an old gum commercial stirs that much hate in you, you must be a real laugh at parties. Is your name Cornel West? Saying, "I hate X people as a group" makes you a de facto bigot, not necessarily a racist. What I really hate is that I often think the same thing when I see "ultra-white" stuff like this.
I bought this today at a Meijer liking the Kitchy design of the package but not knowing how it tastes. I like it. I had to look it up when I got home. Thanks for posting.
They still sell this at some gas stations here in MS. It has to be an old gas station though haha. I bought some for my dad at Cracker Barrell not to long ago!
Alpert lucked into the big money with this! He found an original sound and sold all manner of albums and commercials , not to mention T.V. spots and endorsements. He went on to found A&R Records.
In early 1965, Clark Gum {then owned by Philip Morris} was looking for a different way to "pitch" its 'Teaberry' flavored gum. Someone at their ad agency heard the Tijuana Brass' "Mexican Shuffle", and decided that music was perfect. The campaign followed, and the song (and "Teaberry Gum") became a hit...
You know how sometimes things pop into your head from years ago? The Teaberry Shuffle just poped into mine, I thought, "maybe someone's posted it on Youtube!" Thanks for not letting me down.
I wanted to add that I like the little music hook at the end with the animated berries dingling in tune. Advertisers were creative and clever back then. Todays commercials are just annoying.

You'll notice the first "shuffler" was the man who played Mr. Whipple, "Please don't squeeze the Charmin", Dick Wilson. We lost him a year or so ago.
