Background radiation is composed of Terrestrial Radiation (from the earth) and Cosmic radiation (from the sun). No amount of radiation is good for you, so yes it can be harmful and no I don't think it will ever go away, in fact with the increase in numbers of man--made radiation exams being ordered (x-rays, CT scan etc.), which all contribute to background radiation, the amounts will only increase. Hope this helps.
@karirivest1, you are wrong in saying that no amount of radiation is good. The body has a cell repair mechanism which copes fine with the effects of ambient background doses. If isolated from the background radiation, the body would lose its ability to produce hormones essential to cope with the effects of cell damage, caused not only by radiation itself. Thus it would lead to higher risk of parasitic developments in cells causing increased risk of developments of cancerous tissue.
I have a couple of questions: What kind of radiation is the so-called "Background radiation", where does it come from, can it be harmful and will it ever go away?
Another exhaustive treatment of radiation doses.

Can I request you provide a study that comes to the same conclusion as you? that background radiation is essential for hormone generation?
