  • As we are biological creatures, many, many many factors are at play when it comes to losing weight. From a purely thermodynamic perspective starvation mode is a myth. In reality we all hit barriers; but as is mentioned in this video the barriers tend to be much more based on human condition, than natural physical laws.

Here is another take by one of our physiologists at Fm. search: weight loss starvation mode fitmetabolism

  • Exactly....

lets say i consume 500 calories per day.

I run for 1 hour and i spend 700 calories.

I hit the gym for 2 hours and i spend 1000 calories.

How is possible not to lose weight ?

WHERE I AM GETTING ALL THIS ENERGY IF NOT FROM BURNING FAT ?

IF MY BODY IS IN A STARVATION MODE THEN WHAT I AM BURNING TO DO THE RUNNING AND THE GYM ?

Starvation mode must be a myth.

  • 'Starvation mode' is a real thing, I agree with what this guy said in his video. Starvation mode only happens when the body hasn't got fat reserves to convert to energy. Simple fact, if you burn more than you intake you WILL lose weight, the human body doesn't by some miracle become more efficient! when you starve, you have no energy and burn less calories than you consume.

Eat sensibly, do some exercise and be healthy. If you want to lose more weight, do more exercise... simples

  • Starvation mode is not a myth. Its very real and true. I cut back my calories really low for awhile and I did stop losing weight, and I actually regained more weight when I added more calories- not even half of what I ate before. Why do you think people can survive for so long not eating. It takes awhile before people actually die from starvation. The body slows down to preserve all it can. Maybe it doesnt effect everyone the same, but it does exist, and it nearly destroyed my progress.

  • @VASINGER

It is tenuous attempting to draw conclusions from specific examples. I think it's fair to assume that you didn't control variables rigorously. Furthermore, you need to make sure your non-physical activity remains constant, which extends not only to periods of "exercise", but how much you tap your foot, chew gum, run and walk around (etc).

Most of the feedback mechanisms which regulate weight are hormonal/psychological and don't relate DIRECTLY to metabolic efficiency

  • FINALLY someone with knowledge & sense. starvation mode is a myth!

  • This is not true, I have drastically reduced my caloric intake and worked my ass off in the gym and actually gained weight. Once I began to eat more I lost 7lbs in a week. Saying starvation mode is a myth is a scam that those in the fitness industry rely on to keep their clients in need of their services.

  • Heard of ketose?

  • As I understand it, the metabolic rate slightly slows down. The mtabolic rate is still fuctioning. By the way. "honesty"... What do you mean by that? How is THIS relevant in THIS section titeled ""Starvation Mode" Explained". Its off topic in my opinion.

  • will that person gain back the weight (plus more) when they resume to eating a normal amount of calories?

  • This is very wrong.

  • This guy has no idea what he is talking about. I was in the Marines running my ass off everyday, working out like crazy, but I failed to eat properly. What I mean by not eating properly is not eating enough. I was cutting my calories to a point that was unhealthy and damaging to my body. So guess what, I gained weight and could not loose it no matter how hard I tried. Just because this numb-nutts has not seen someone in this situation does not mean it does not exist. PRICK!

  • @kiryoki this guy has masters degree in fitness...tells you how much school teaches you

  • @tarb451 ya I guess so huh! I usually don't reply to postings, but this one was a little personal. It upset me because this is a serious issue for some people like myself. I told my Navy doctor that I thought I was in starvation mode and she laughed at me!!! It was really hard because I kind of had an idea what was wrong with me, but I didn't know how to fix it. Thanks for your reply!!

  • @kiryoki I believe what this guy is saying is true, but as he said starvation mode is real, and ussually kicks in when you are down to ~7% body fat

  • @yenyoo That makes so much sense now. Out of boot camp I was just skin and bones it seemed like. Then I was exercising too much and eating too little. If only I knew this before. Thanks for the reply!!

  • I think it is definitely a myth. I went through a depressive episode back in june for about 2-3 weeks after a breakup and i was hardly eating. I lost like 20 pounds during that time. I'm not saying it's a healthy way to lose weight, just that I think the starvation mode concept is a load of bullcrap.

  • So true. I'm so surprised that this myth has permeated even the professional fitness industry (ie. ppl who should know better).

  • @gargantuandick Um , it happened to me.
