@xxwes997xx What you describe is a chisagatana (or more colloquially, makuragatana). Kodachi is "short" or "companion" sword (depending on kanji)- this covers the range from wakizashi to down to long tanto, with size/style preference varying by Ryu.
I believe it is actually a Kodachi, I have one as well, and it is hard to find a teacher for the style, learning that trial and error is about the only method that works, mixes well with some arm bar/judo type moves as well. Fast to draw, and extremely quick, I do love my Kodachi vs other weapons. Sorry, self taught and still learning so feel free to criticize. Love the youtube self samurai school of thought though, learning a lot of diffrent styles here, thank you all and good day.
I love the length and design of this sword! Not as short as a wakizashi but it looks faster and more agile than a "standard" Samurai sword. (I understand that the word katana generally means sword of any kind).
The length of this blade is about 22.5" or 24"if you include the collar and guard. (60cm or so). Technically its a "ninja-to", crafted by Paul Chen. I am not a ninja and prefer to refer to the weapon as a short sword or "kodachi". (ko=small or little, dachi=sword). I appreciate and welcome all comments.
@Seves I have some background in Iaido (Shiho Karano Kai), and have trained in traditional M/A weapons including Bo and Jo staff. Short -sword work however is primarily self taught, based on what I know about Kenpo. A weapon is just an extension of the body. Also with the internet and books there is a lot of info out there. Not to many secrets left. I have no "Teacher" in short sword.
@Hakufuichi , I just caught your video while searching for certain crane stances. Funny how looking for 'ko tsuru dachi' led me to your youtube page. And yes, that is a ninja-to you are using not a tan-to. Be well.

is a ninja-to no a kodachi, the codachi is a katana with curve 60cm blade. Kodachi was used by coachman.

This is really good compare to some I've seen. It almost seems to have a taichi influence with all the reverse grip strikes.

what's the differentce between kodachi and a wakizashi
NelsonPesadelo 11 months ago
@NelsonPesadelo To be honest, I really don't know. It may be that a wakizashi is a specific type of short-sword. Ko-dachi simply means "short-sword".
Hakufuichi 11 months ago
@Hakufuichi kodachi is a short bladed sword with a full length katana handle. basically a long handled wakizashi.

@RaiAntou Kenpo has its roots in Chuan-Fa, thus the Chinese influence. Thanx for posting.

@Hakufuichi Chuan-Fa as in 春花?

@RaiAntou Sorry, I can't positively confirm this but I believe so.

thats not a kodachi. a kodachi's blade is shorter than 2 shaku(aproximately 70 cm). that blade is definitely not less than 70 cm. cool video though.

this video makes it look longer than that. i guess it is short enough then. where did you learn how to use a short sword?
