Mate, rugby is still big in Japan at the high school and club level, but in an unfortunate rapid decline at professional and national level. The administration of the sport is a mess but as you can see, plenty of people still get out and enjoy it. And 172cm would be no barrier to playing here - you just have to remember that even those short guys here can hit pretty hard!
I'm 185cm/82kg, which is slightly taller than average in NZ, but nothing spectacular, and generally way too small to play rugby. But in Japan, that's big enough that I usually play lock - pretty much unthinkable overseas if you are not at least 195cm.
Hey Hikosan, Great Video. I like how everyone is enjoying themselves during this friendly competion. Looks like you have very many friends over there. Thank you for sharing! Later! Nick
Nick mate! Hehe, I think I'm known in this rugby competition as that gaijin guy with the video camera who talks too much in Japanese... Hehe. It's great fun - for many people, this is their escape from their stress and daily lives. The great thing about rugby is how you try to kill each other on the field, and then you walk off the field and everyone is like this. I think it's what makes the sport so special.
Rucheombura san! In Tokyo, there are about five or six Autumn social competitions, each with about 12 teams, and a large number of grade and company teams above that. This was a nice day where all the teams can compete at once.
And yes, I was a referee too - it's a family tradition! I'll do another video on refereeing sometime.
Mate, we made the playoff tournament, but given how hot it was and how tired we got, we were happy to sit back, drink beer and enjoy watching the final. Cheers!
Actually, we all play touch rugby and learn rugby skills in NZ, but I never actually played rugby like this until 3 years ago! I joined for fun, but it is great to play, and this league is full of people who are new to the sport, or haven't played in a long time.
If you get the chance, it would be great to have you along for a game!
I'm glad you enjoyed the vid - as you can see, it's good people here, everyone enjoying!
Sanbastion mate! Yep, I FINALLY got this up. It took some editing too - I started with 2 hours of video, and when I got to this point, I thought I could cut more and it is still a bit long... but it looked like the right balance. I could have put more of the samba dancers up perhaps... hehe
Yep, one thing I like about Japan is how people get into their hobbies like this. This was mad fun.
There are actually more people playing rugby here in Japan than in New Zealand.
Also, it is funny, there are a few half (double?!) Japanese, but also Japanese who play tend to look strong, and start to look like maori or pacific island guys like in NZ!
Good video! I don't at all understand the rules of rugby but this was still very enjoyable lol

Though I do not understand rugby so much I was surprised that there are many participating teams.
Is Mr.Hiko referee and a player on that day?
