The food is much better than it once was years ago, plus there's a selection. And I like the dining car atmosphere, meeting fellow travelers, and watch the scenery as you eat. I find it very comfortable, and enjoy going to the diner and having every one of my meals there. If you book a sleeper the price of all of your meals and the 4:00pm wine and cheese (on the Coast Starlight) is included. Great music!
I loved having dinner on the Zephyr while crossing the Mississippi. The best lunch was high in the Sierras, and breakfast as the first mesas appeared in western Nebraska and eastern Colorado while climbing toward Denver. What a trip, and what food! The comment about needing ones wallet, is only if you are not traveling first class. The food is on the first class ticket. I look forward to my next Amtrak joiurney.
Silver Meteor & Silver Star dining car service is awesome! The food was very good, and the waiters were excellent. Havent been on the Crescent yet, but its on my to do list.
My favorite part is passing over railroad crossings while eating in the dining car. While Im inside enjoying a nice meal, the people at the crossing are stuck waiting for the train to pass.
I'm going from Buffalo NY to Jacksonville FL. I know on the first train im on they have buisiness class and first class seats, on the second train I take which is the silver meteor there is no indication weather they have buisiness or first class seats. I would like first class because meals are included and its cheaper than a room. Did they have first class on this train?
Flying there is so impersonal. Driving there takes forever and the gas prices are outrageous. But Amtrak is a great way to travel. You get to take in different sceneries, have time to talk to you travel companions, and, of course, visit the dining car for some some surprisingly fast and good food. Plus, there's a certain nostalgic romance about sailing the rails to your destination.
Nice video and great nostalgic big band music to set the mood! I travel on the California Zephyr Amtrak train at least once a year between Denver, Colorado and Provo, Utah. I always enjoy the trip!
Amtrak food isn't too bad really, much better than that nasty airline food, and you can get stinking drunk and fall asleep in your cabin without being arrested by sky marshals.
@professah360 Most don't realize, that when you go First Class, all meals are included in your train fare.. often it works out about the same as driving, plus spending the nights in hotels plus meals.. it's really a good value, and when you find discounts, it's great.. First Class train cabins are so much quiter than in the rear too, reason is you only hear noise from 1/2 of the train, not the full train across, plus listening to the areas between the connecting coaches all night long.
My two favorite Amtrak breakfast locations are on the Coast Starlight Northbound at Mt. Shasta, California thru Grants Pass, Oregon. The other is Empire Builder Eastbound thru the Continental Divide. Definitely pancake country.
Very cool. Its high time Amtrak extended the use of their nicer newer diners, like on the Autotrain, to system wide use. The same could be said for the lounge cars.
The song is called, "Chattanooga Choo-Choo." It was recorded by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, among others. If you've never heard a big band like that at full throttle you are in for an experience, especially if you like the way songs are arranged.
I've always found train food atrocious and Amtrak was the worst.

Looking good, a refurbished Heritage Dinning car. Car is over 60 years old, what would you guess the age of this one was?

Not as much as a bar but more like you can buy beer/wine from the cafe car or have it brought to you during dinner

We used the diner on the Capitol Limited when in the US in 2006. Very good and I look forward to the next time. And yes, you pay for the wine.

It is that if you have a sleeper that you get everything except alcohol free from the dining. Even if you ate like 2 lunch entreés
