great segment. What I don't understand (ok maybe I do) is why we don't get rid of Farm Subsidies. They are an outdated form of corporate welfare that would allow other countries to compete with the US and cut US spending.
Right...well, you have to realize that for many crops, such as corn...they aren't even food crops. They are commodities. They are grown such that they can be used not as food, but as RAW MATERIALS for industry. Hence they get subsidized because what they get turned into at the factory can be sold for much more and it makes it worth it. Or they can feed animals and they can be sold for more, etc.
As far as competition...nobody wants Africa to compete with the US. Hence the IMF, World Bank.
