  • are the ones on budk the real deal cause there way cheaper than on cldsteels web page

  • @maul668 Cold Steel's webpage is always showing the price they want people to pay, but you can find the knives for cheaper in a lot of places. So they're probably real.

  • I could not find any info on their site, where is cold steel made in mostly?

  • You can do the pocket opening ziptie mod to these but you have to use a larger ziptie than you would on something like a spyderco delica. Makes. Them. Fast.

  • Would you say the triad lock by cold steel is better than the axis lock by benchmade?

  • i wish they would have kept the side log, not a fan of arc locks

  • nutn, you should get a contract with one of your favorite knife companies and design a blade

  • How does the Recon 1 compare with the AK47?

  • That tanto version looks awesome with how the finish wore like that.

  • Cold steel says batoning is abuse and they dont recommend it. But they make rediculous videos of cutting through car doors. Advertise bad ass but dont recommend batoning, stooopod

  • Good Vid, Good Review. A piece of advice though... since you're doing a lot of these. It's completely unnecessary to bring the items that darn close to the camera.

  • Did you review the Kershaw Tilt?

  • Great job, hermano! The serrations on the Cold Steel knives are not great for hard cutting, but they're great for knives used as weapons. They're also good for some types of cutting, but I prefer plain edges for most uses. Can you do a video on how a person can reclaim a knife where the serrations have popped teeth? Can such a knife be reclaimed? If worse came to worse, I guess you can file an edge onto one.

  • will you please check/review the new to be released in 2012 Recon 1 Mini folder

  • honestly, do you really need gimping with that massive finger choil? that's one thing I've noticed about all of Cold Steels Triad lock knives; their grip designs pretty much eliminate the need for gimping.

  • duuuuuuuude.

  • The ergonomics of the Recon 1 and many of the other knives by Cold Steel is great if you have a large fat ham hand. They suck if you're have a small or medium size hand.

  • Hey Nutn, what do you think of the new Spear Point Recon 1?

  • Got the clip point version about a month ago, just like all lockbacks it still has some back and forth blade blay, good knife though

  • i love cold steel's knives i own several but i've found that the larado bowie has a major design flaw in the fact that there isn't anything preventing a sweaty hand from slipping from the handle onto the blade trust me i've witnessed this happen

  • Personally what I don't like about Cold Steel is the fact that all of their knives are marketed as weapons, which is just a bad message to put out there. Also you can tell with most knives they make, that intention is in mind. Their versatility only goes so far.

They do have some fine knives, but for my uses I've always found better options than them.

  • cold steel knives are bad

  • I batoned with this a few times and realized the blade had various bends in it, oops aus 8 isnt for batoning or any other stainless for that matter stick to carbon for batoning :)

  • @sandythebear That isnt an accurate statement. There are so many varities of steel that there are some carbons that arent good for some things, and some stainlesses that arent good for some things.

Just cause one stainless steel does that doesnt mean they all will.

  • @Kylef7735 I know that mora of sweden's stainless 12c27 sandvic clipper doesn't :D i rather think it may be cold steel doing bad temper jobs on their knives possibly

  • @sandythebear I dont think so cause their AUS8 performs great, idk man.

  • another excellent review brother i was looking for another tough folder to rotate my zt350 out in my edc just wanting a change.

i'm going with the plain tanto version after seeing you process firewood lol i'm sold i just want something easy to sharpen rugged and on the cheaper side to spice things up a bit. so thank you sir for addressing every question i had and then some.

  • holy shit lulz he was processing fire wood with the tanto! people need to get off nutn's back he takes the time to actually test things and draws on years of experience thats obvious. he is alway's excited about what he does and it all comes down to an excellent review.

if you don't like don't watch there are plenty of other guys reviewing gear out there good luck listening to them :)

  • just ordered this and some taclite pants!

  • @barehandedbearhunter

thanks for sharing with the group :/

  • @ladyfeind youre welcome.

  • Does anyone else cringe when Cold Steel bends the knife as a test. I can't watch a knife take that abuse.

  • @FatJoe214 was just watching one of their videos and thought the same thing

  • titanium liners, 40% lighter more than twice as strong, but more expensive, just a thought

  • how about reviewing an Emerson Super Karambit? Just a thought :)

  • @LWRCftw He doesnt like Hawkbills..... i havent had time to explain their benefits to him. ;)

  • @Kylef7735 aw, that's too bad. I love Karambits.

  • @LWRCftw IKR, my one video is on a Spyderhawk, i love them too! If me and nutn ever have a sit down conversation i know ill be able to talking him into liking them, lol

  • @Kylef7735 he is kind of a traditionalist.

  • @LWRCftw I love the design of Karambit's, but the more traditional blade styles are more versatile. Karambit's are a very specific type of blade for a specific task. I think Nutn would at least agree they have their role and are very effective in that role.

  • i want the mini recon 1

  • Cold Steel Recon 1 will be my next knife! Thanks Nutn!

  • @BigmanJ29 samme

  • I love Cold Steel and all of their designs, but I just cannot get myself to spend the cash on a foreign made knife. If they started doing a US made line I'd fork up the extra cash and buy 'em all up. Oh well, I won't get sick of my Benchmade's and Spyderco's anytime soon.

  • I have followed nutn since day 1 but what the f is a wizard of oz issue???

  • @cmwilson7 Extranious non necessary wierd design ingredients. Like funky shapes and stuff like that. extra stuff that is not needed and just looks plain odd.

  • @cmwilson7 He mainly focuses this on the clip of the knife, but it's his way of describing it if it has any weird or funky design to it. Maybe something like the "Kerhsaw Needs Work". It has a strange looking pocket clip

  • Hey nutnfancy i was wondering if you liked the 860 bedlam by Benchmade?

  • @886NINJA He likes it except for the weight. it is a heavy knife (By his standards, haha)

  • They never show how the blade is AFTER a bend test...

  • @G0dSeth the point is to show its not going to break...ofcourse its not going to bounce back to perfectly but it will still be useful. There are only two things i dont like about CS; their serriations and they dont offer assisted/auto knives!

  • @G0dSeth Yeah I've noticed that too. Most of the blades look okay after it but a lot of them seem to have a slight bend if you really look. You should see the one where they test the small sword. It gets bent something terrible.

  • I love the new Recon 1, I just wish it had a larger pivot and a slightly thicker blade. It would also be cool if they offered it in VG10 as well, but that's a little too optimistic. :)

  • how about reviewing a Mantis Mk-3VK?

  • carried the tanto version for over a year as an edc its an awesome blade and so damn tough. now its hiding somewhere in my room and i bought an american lawman to replace it. cold steel knives are great value and are the toughest knives ive ever come across

  • lol "how bout dat right dere" lmao 10:28

  • thumbs up if u lol @ "how about that right there" @ 10:28

  • Just got this in the tanto blade. Excellent knife, one of cold steel's best folders. Better than the Ak47 (IMO) and I have yet to order myself the American Lawman. It's the best traction I've ever felt bar none, folder or fixed. It's like sandpaper (but it's also surprisingly comfortable!). Anyway, thanks for the excellent review nutn, as always (watching it again now with the knife in my hand)

  • Cold steel beats the crap outta their blades before they put them on the market,,,it shows in the finished product...i love em.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for this detailed review.

    Your tanto looks great. :-)

  • Got a new Recon 1 clip point for Christmas. Absolutely love it.

Knife was purchased based on this review. If Cold Steel / Spyderco / Kershaw / etc. don't toss some free "samples" or beta-versions your way, Nutn, they should be.

  • I love you nutn but soooo many whip sounds

  • I liked the old lock and the old tanto point. I'm going to pass on this one.

  • Just got my serrated Tanto in today. oh man this knife is amazingly solid and sharp. I cant get it out of my hands. The grip is probably my favorite part of it, I don't know how they did it but I wish my Glock had this polymer 'stippling', its like glue.

  • is the recon 1 made in USA?

  • @GunsRlife17 No it isn't, I believe it's made in Taiwan. All of Cold Steel's blades are produced overseas.

  • @GunsRlife17 yes

  • Best Cutters: Spyderco

    Best Self Defense: Emerson

Wannabe Cool But Have No Money: Cold Steel

    U Jelly??

  • Long video, but its great! I really appreciate you taking your time going over all details and such.

    thanks!

  • The inherent strength of the linerless G-10 Triad Lock design should be offered in a premium steel version...The Demko design is arguably one of the strongest locking designs and as such should be available on an all out premium Hard Use Folder... A Recon One with a 4" Flat ground S30V blade would be freakin awesome and sell gangbusters at $99 retail.....And if Spyderco can retail Colorado made S30v Para 2's for $110 then CS should be able to sell a Taiwan made Recon1 S30V ten bucks Cheaper.

  • Word !!! I love Cold Steel, just got the GI Tanto : Amazing

  • I just think Cold Steel's marking is a little wonky. Look at Ernest Emerson for example that guys the real deal. But you watch Cold Steel's videos however, you see Lynn Thompson. Overweight middle aged guy, in a buttoned up shirt, tie, and dress shoes huffing and puffing, hacking boards and pigs up with these weapons. Its kind of comical.

That said, I still ended up buying a Recon 1 from amazon. $56. Great knife, once you have it in your hands you overlook the marketing.

  • I love this thing. It's fast, incredibly strong, pretty cheap, outstandingly sharp, easy to sharpen, and has exceptional traction. I've batoned the clip point version, carried it for over a year, resharpened it about a dozen times, and done stabbing tests. For a tactical knife, this is a 9 out of 10. If it was flat ground, 10 out of 10. Love the AUS8 steel, but I wish cold steel would bust out the VG-10 once in a while.

  • I am looking to buy a knife for camping/survival/tactical roles and i can seem to decide between the cold steel recon1, kabar usmc, or the kabar bowie. Please help out with my question

  • @phillip53k5hun8 If you want a knife for camping or survival ur definitely going to want a fixed blade. Kabars are great for the money. Also for 10 buck... check out the Rough Use Knife from Cheaper than Dirt... tough as hell for 10 dollars its ridiculous.

  • i recently bought a cold steel recon 1 plain edge clip point and it's AWESOME!!! out of all the knives in the market, spyderco, benchmade, gerber, SAK, i believe that cold steel has a superior knife in the recon 1. sure it may be a litle on the bigger side for some people but it is stronger than anyother folding knife i've seen to date including the $200 ones that some manufactures make. it's reliable, durable and all around a great knife!

Thank you Nutnfancy for reviewing this knife!

  • absolutely impressed with cold steel. ive had my recon 1 tanto variety (newer version) for about a year now and i have taken it on many camping trips and edc it now and then as a tactical blade. i have had no issues with the lock up until recently. i figured i would take it completely apart and just clean it a little with some canned air. when i put the pivot screw back on i figured i would put a little lock tight on it. when i put the screw back in, the lock up hasnt been the same. could be me.

  • Thanks so much for this update. I just ordered a Recon I because now I can see that they fixed the issues that kept me from buying one awhile back. I also note the major difference in buying something made for a USA company contracting to a manufacturer in Taiwan (Formosa) and using Japanese steel for the blades... as opposed to some piece of junk made in communist China.

  • it's also sub $60 only if you get it from anywhere other than cold steel's website.

  • i honestly love the way cold steel advertises.

  • its a little weird to be able to look at a set of thumbnails pics and recognize your fingertips before I read the name.... Love your reviews, keep it up.

  • i will buy that recon 1 (the older one) from you

  • hey nutnfancy,i'm from Europe, i watch your knifes reviews all the time, great reviews! you focus all the important details that we need when we use a knife. i would like to know what you recomend for a tactical use primarelly, but if necessary could be used in a survival situation?

  • @nutnfancy Hey nutn, what knife should I invest money in more ?

    The Ak-47, or the Recon I ?

  • i carry a tanto with teeth every where.

  • Love you nutn but those damn spydercos are not going to stand up against the recon when it comes to strength and durability. Get them out of the picture.

  • @443laxbox92 Dont come to a knife channel supporting all knife companies with your fan-boy idealism. Folding knives will rarely be used to preform the tasks a Tri-Ad lock can withstand, therefor in regular use, a spyderco, sog, CRKT, or any other knife company, could go toe to toe with a recon 1.

  • @eas26 and bvgreen652, you don't understand. The pou of the recon is entirely dedicated toward heavy duty utility and tactical use. This is exactly what nutnfancy states himself in the video. The recon can be used for edc, however its like using a highly tuned ferrari in a construction derbie (Generation Kill). The knives you are speaking of are in completely different categories, thus not comparable. In terms of durabilty and tactical use, the recon trumps the other knives flat out.

  • @443laxbox92 Not true. All of the knife companies I mentioned make or have made a heavy duty folder. In terms of durability, I agree completely, but for tactical use, there are many that out preform a recon 1. One advantage the recon 1 has is value, because as far as Ive seen there are very few hard use folders that are at the 80 dollar mark. And dont try and school me on hard use folders, my job involves unloading crates and busting them open, and the recon 1 is occasionally my pry bar of choice

  • @eas26 I'm not saying that the recon is the end all heavy duty folder. And lets get another thing clear, I am not talking about all spydercos, just simply the ones nutn introduces in his video. No one is trying to make you look like a fool or trying to "school" you. I myself do search and rescue missions regularly, and I can say from experience that I would prefer the recon over a a spyderco of the tenacious family. I love my persistence, but i would take the recon for more heavy duty pou.

  • @443laxbox92 AH! I didnt see what you meant my friend! I would definitively try to use a recon 1 over a tenacious in a hard use role. It seemed like you were referring to a company as a whole.

  • @443laxbox92 What I mean is that the only major difference between the Resilience and the Recon is the lock. And the only way to make the lock fail on the Resilience (I think) would maybe a tremendous stab to a very hard piece of wood or to lock it into a vise and hang hundereds of pounds on it. I think that the Recon is a great tactical use knife but if I were knowingly going to be in a tactical situation i.e the military, I would go with the more expensive and even more durable knives.

  • @443laxbox92 you should check out cutlery lovers cold steel vs spyderco video

  • @buddycanifinish I checked it out, and its a pretty good vid. Thank you for the recommendation. There were some cons, and there are plenty more variables that contribute to equation of what a good heavy folder should do. Nutnfancy did a great test of the recons durability with batoning, I wish cutlery lover did something like that with the tenacious. That way people could see the real benefit of having the recon over the tenacious in more heavy duty situations.

  • @443laxbox92 I think that my spyderco resilience is a very comparable knife to the recon 1. No I don't think that the resilience could take all of the lock tests that the recon 1 can, but a folder only needs to be so strong before you lose the need for extra strength. Plus I got my resilience to the door for 35$, so unless you plan on abusing your knife needlessly, I think that the spyderco resilience has a slight advantage.

  • @443laxbox92 i don't think many folders could compare to the tri-ad lock.

  • @443laxbox92 Check out cutlerylovers vid when he chops down the 3 inch tree with the endura.

What more strength and durability do you need dude???

  • @Kylef7735 Put it up against the Recon in a tree chopping test and tell me which one you prefer. You can chop down a tree with a spoon, but its going to take forever! If you want to conserve calories and effort, you will choose the Recon.

  • @443laxbox92 Yes the recon will do better but thats not the test, the test is can it handle it, not if it does it better.

  • at 7:07 i thought you were gonna say wache paperweight... lol

  • You talk too much about shit that doesn't matter. People search for a knife review because they want to see and hear about the knife not the way a company markets there products

  • @BoaZ1234567891 For someone who doesn't watch, you sure hang out in the comments of several reviews that Nutn has done. This is the fourth review that I've seen negative comments from you. If you don't like...fine..don't watch, but spare us the dramatics. -- Veri

  • @Jnicol97 Unless you're blind, it's quite obvious by the video runtime that he doesn't just read manufacturer's specifications for a review. Move along, junior.

  • lol sound effects. wa koosh. the weight

  • Thanks for another GREAT review. It was a huge help. Great knife for that money. Replaced my Pohl Force Alpha Three (great knife though. only a bit too heavy for edc :D You might check it out one day).

Greetings from Germany. And keep up the good work.

  • @MrBlades93

  • @MrBlades93

    vielen dank!

  • Dear nutnfancy,

Please get Cold Steel to ditch the teflon and change it with DLC...

  • @paintball626 and some guys try to start say its expensive(especially for aus8) Will im gonna buy dlc coated recon1? fucking YES!! :D

  • @MrHALOCOUST it wouldn't be that much more expensive...there are DLC coated Kershaw knives in the same price range...14C28N is about the same quality as AUS8 too...

  • @paintball626 oh yeah your right.cold steel must change their coating to the dlc.that would be awesome.

and a high carbon steel version of it also can make this great outdoor folding hd knife

  • Comment removed

  • @MrHALOCOUST how about a VG-10 or S30V version!!

  • Great video Nutnfancy, you always remind me why I'm subscribed to you. I was on the fence about what knife I wanted to get but I know now! Thanks man.

  • If you have two of these knives, and weigh 150 lbs... can you climb a tree using these knifes

  • Is there different benefits between the tanto vs the clip point; or is it just what is more visually appealing to the buyer?

  • @House6409 Tantos are less prone to tip breakage in a stabbing or thrusting motion than a lot of clip blades, but clip blades have at advantage in a slashing/slicing motion due to the sweep or "belly" toward the tip. hope that helps!

  • @AirForceAce3571 It was a BIG help. Thanks! I bought the clip blade recon 1. These knives are damn sharp and you need to be careful your fingers are not in the way when folding down the blade because the spring will make it close fast on your fingers. Cut myself twice this way, but I learned my lesson.

  • what do you think about taking this knife under water i do a lot of work in the water

  • @graham81ful I dont think it would do that well because right after the teflon coating wears off..its going to start to rust. I recommend some of spydercos with the Vg10.

  • @graham81ful dont get this for a water knife. get something out of the spyderco SALT lineup. they are made of H1 steel that never rusts. benchmade also makes a griptilian out of X15tn steel that wont rust either

  • A little bit of constructive advice. You talk to much. Stick to the subject. This is a recon 1 review. You do not actually get to the subject matter until 5:27 into the video. Enough time wasted to do the entire review in... if done without all the hot air. Stop wasting your time and ours. Get efficient.

  • @brianminkc Yet another comment from a guy too STUPID to move on. If the reviews are too long for you....QUIT WATCHING THEM. -- Veri

  • Review starts at 8:51....

  • Earlier I questioned the discrepancy between Nutn's claim that the original Recon 1 weighed 6.6 oz when the company claimed 5.6 oz. I now understand that he doesn't necessarily believe everything that he reads... he ACTUALLY weighs the knife. Good job keeping it real Nutn.

  • I just can't get into some of the Cold Steel knives. It's the Teflon coating they put on some of their blades that turns me off. On the flip side of the coin, some people love it and are very happy with the way their Cold Steel knives are produced, so you can't just dismiss Cold Steel knives.

  • actully most navy seals get to choose there own gear... what works best for the mission there on at that point

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you Nutnfancy for your great reviews...I have many Cold steel knives and I agree.

  • This isnt spring assist right?

  • hey nutn on my cold stell ak-47 it didnt come sharp out of the box infact i was pretty dull to be honest , is that just chance or should i be worried when i buy this knife?

  • would you like to sell this knife since you dont use it much ?

  • the recon 1 is the knife the u.s. navy seals use

  • @jerkinstillalive1 LOL No. Deadliest warrior is all bullshit. Navy Seals dive teams use the SRK

  • hey what is the knife that is shown in the thumbnail for this video and the ak47 knife video thumbnail???

  • awesome knife im getting this and the Spyderco endura 4 FFG

  • what website did you get it from?

  • which do you prefer? Serrated, or Plain edge?

  • personolly i dont like cold steel knife test that much. i mean, i think that what there doing is realy sure, BUT thhey dont show the intressting thing. i mean, pretty much any knife can cut thorugh a pig if its sharp enough or cut through thick rope or even cut though a car roof. but the intresting thing is how ruined the knife is after the test.

how shipped is it? how dull is it? any cracks in it?

i dont like that they dont show that

  • Comment removed

  • definitely agree! I dislike their marketing, but love their knives

  • Nutnfancy, Would Duracoating the Recon 1 Tanto blade resolve the wearing of the paint? Thanks, wtr7

  • Beaten the hell out of my clip recon. No chips blade play, nothing :D

  • @sandythebear but how dull was it after? O_o

  • @Petegrin1 Not very! still cut paper

  • Whats POU?

  • @KBar666 Philosophy of use, how you are going to use the knife like small knives for menial tasks, or big knives for bigger taskes

  • @sandythebear

    Thanks

  • What is TMP, iv missed a few eps..

  • @HazeBlade93 the nuthinfancy project.. its tnp not t m p

  • Can you take it completely appart? So you can clean it.

  • @3ch0null You just answered that question

  • This is the only blade from Cold Steel I would spend money on. It's because I like it so much and it isn't too pricey but this is the only one. I can't stand the way Cold Steel sells/markets their knives/swords. Hate it.

  • and isnt the recon 1 contracted to the SEALs?

  • and for a fixed blade id rather buy a kabar or rat co then a limited featured CS knife

  • can you buy these at big 5 or a walkin store or are they just internet shit?

  • @nutnfancy Hey man i like your reviews! this review made it easier to purchase my recon 1 without any doubts er anything like that, im very happy with my recon 1

  • I love Cold Steel blades, but they market almost every knife as a weapon.

  • just ordered my recon 1 yesterday
