They were hugely and unfairly derided at the time as a dry cleaned Motley Crue. Stryper had the chops that many of the 80s hair metal bands lacked. Sweet could actually sing properly so he didn't fuck his voice like most of those guys back then did. Listen to many of them now and they sound like shit. Michael Sweet, Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie James Dio, etc still have the pipes today 'cause they took care of their voices.
