I want this car... but I live in northeast IL, and there's not really anywhere to offroad. I'm scared about the gas mileage but my friend drives a V8 Tundra... so I dunno, I want to go chill out on some trails with him sometime, but I want to keep it stock. Looks good.... hopefully I can handle the drop from 28mpg to 20...
I heard Nissan has to axe the Xterra due to it lowering their Corporate Avg Fuel Econ standard, which they have to meet, because of the government. :(
@arsmoriendo Can i ask, what is the major difference between the offroad model and the other models? Is the suspension different? Tires? What? The new 2011 Model's are pretty much all the same drive, just different internal features. Any insight?
Stock Xterra front diffs (the R180) are known to grenade the spider gears and blow the diff. I went through two R180's myself before wising up and swapping in the Titan front diff (M205). Direct fit, bolts right up.
I like auto. I was in a sticky situation...teetering on ne left and one right shaking like a leaf ready to roll....if I had a clutch to deal with, i might have shaken off the clutch.....I am NOT a pro offf roader by all means, but that is the experience that sticks me with auto.
@arsmoriendo I've only heard of the spider gear breaking on the rear differential while on rough off road trails, but Nissan is pretty good about fixing stuff under warranty. :)
@arsmoriendo Some people have had the front Diff grenade, but that is usually only when the truck has been driven beyond it's capability. Often it's been lifted, fitted with larger tires and severely abused. The damage is cumulative so the diff doesn't always fail when off roading. In stock form there's not much you will be able to do to it that will hurt the diff short of slamming it down on a rock.
Ford all the way, but nissan still kicks ass

automatic vs manual for this type of drving?
which is more applicable to this environment?
I am in the midst of testing them and wondering what others believe are the advantages, disadvantages of either.

@xpez for off roading automatic is the way to go. specially in rock crawlning
CedrikTheManiac00 2 years ago
@xpez manual for sure so you can leave it in a gear and get it in high rev without up shifting like in a auto

have you had problems with your diff?
Rckdreams 2 years ago
None to date. Anything I should know about?
arsmoriendo 2 years ago
i just heard they have problems with the diffs going out offroading
Rckdreams 2 years ago
@Rckdreams
there was a problem with the rear diff in the 05-06 OR, but I believe it was corrected in the 07+
My 07 OR has 40k miles with plenty of Colorado 4wheelin and no problem with either diff so far.

If you mean the diff lock, no. It was just in 4-Low.
