I did training at eastleigh in 1980 & we were down on the track & were being shown how to pull a hook switch, I can tell you having trains passing you down the track is bloody scary & being so close to the live third rail..
Naughty editing, BBC! When John Arthur says "the time now is 16:44", he's at the same incident as in the previous part (Tuesday), although it's in the "Wednesday" part.
I remember watching this very documentary as a kid - and Inside Story also did a similar doc a few years before this one about the Intercity Network - I'd love to see that one again!
I agree with stuart, the suicide shows just what drivers and crew deal with even if this day and age. I've seen it happen at Bath Spa myself and can understand what it must be like!
Thanks so much for posting these vids, I remember watching it when it first came out (especially the bottle-neck version of "amazing grace" backing track). To think that line blockages, suicides and terrorist attacks was all just part of a "normal" week. I was there and it was. This program has shown me how much better the railways really have got since then.
You beat me too it I was thinking of up loading my copy. anyhoo I do have the ECML inside story on the Pullman sevice from Leeds if I can I will try to get that on here.
I remember that. Don't they end up substituting a 47 for the 91, and there is a great image of the driver driving the Pullman wrapped in a massive blanket because the cab is so cold.
Yeah well it was a blue bin liner for the big platform bins, we used to use coloured bags before the clear ones were made mandatory for security reasons...I hadn't seen a driver do that before says something about the poor cab heating of a 47 don't it!
@joelang6126 Well as you can see this isn't mine! and I havent a clue where my version is on VHS so no I can't send it to you and it would break BBC copyright...sorry
@logbasher I was referring to the post you made over a year ago saying that you had "ECML inside story on the Pullman service" and that you were going to try and post it on here. I have this one on torrent anyway, Cheers anyway!
@joelang6126 yeah I do have it my self somewhere but its also been posted on here somewhere I am sure I have seen it posted by another user? thats the one with the driver getting into the blue bin bag?
I'm so glad i'm a guard on diesel lines and OLE lines! 3rd rail scares me!

I cannot believe they made people step over the third rail. I hope that the current was discharged before they did.

@HoodedFig900 That's the standard practice with the third rail, even today. Just don't touch it.

We should appeal to get them to post the verious Inside stories of the railways.
It's not like they pry show them anymore. What do they have to lose?
(NB:I don't live in Britain, so I'm not positive.)

6:37 would they still do that in these circumstances today?

Just before the 5 minute mark, the driver pulls into the station very quickly, do that nowadays and they'd prob be told off!
