  • volume way too low

  • >When I was young and they packed me off to school

and taught me how not to play the game,

    >how not to play the game

    >play the game

    >the game

  • Thanks for posting this mate~~~~ ooh ooh dwelleth in da house oh da lawrd I nearly got mugged going to Sunday School, and fudge themeth that decline me

  • Thanks for the lyrics. Love this song.

  • It sounds as though Ian has been at odds with the COE, judging by some of his lyrics regarding religion. No great wonder. He IS correct, though. As the God of the Bible is "not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays." I am heartened by this song, as a Christian of the Reformed faith. We are His creation, He is not ours.

  • ron and ray i would kindly say u r poorer men than me u must hate the self u r may poles have strings

  • @seeingitself so very true.

  • Great album. Read the statement on the back.

  • Am I listening to an incredible masterpiece? I am...

  • Me encanta esta canción!

  • Thank you for posting these videos. I forgot just how good Jethro Tull is. These bring back some great memories!

  • When I was young and they packed me off to school

and taught me how not to play THE GAME

  • Just another incredible classic from one of the 10 best albums of all time

  • The tune "Wind Up" by the group Juthro Tull, is one of this group's greatest endevours...RVMSP/ Wright

  • Aqualung is in my opinion one of the most spiritual albums ever written... still makes me think about God...

  • best post ever

  • Is this a Jethro Tull smack down to Eric Burdon's .. "When I was Young"? Kinda sound like it.

  • Ian is my god!

  • @Ichnusia Mine too. Lets start our own church. I MEAN IT

  • Religion is absurd and this song is awesome

  • im 36 and really just discovering these guys. pretty damn good.

  • @MrExley I'm 19 and my parents showed this shit to me earlier than i can remember. It's still the best music out there.

  • spent 11 c notes to see ian june 10 phoenix, cant wait ,was there in 73 in thank god for older bros, im 49

  • you people try to read way to much into everything, just enjoy the song ,or turn it off, you have the hole damn thing all wrong

  • @kylinthakilla00 It would be disrespect to not ponder on Tulls lyrics, deep as they are, but i agree arguing isn't needed.

  • @YoGuy37 yeah doesn't matter what you are can't deny it's a good song

  • I don't believe in any god or gods but this song is pretty good.

  • how do you dare tell me that I'm my Father's son

when that was just an accident of Birth.

I'd rather look around me -- compose a better song

`cos that's the honest measure of my worth.

  • Amazing song. I read all the comments about now I'm athiest now and such. But as a young Christian when this came out I loved it. I realized he really isn't the kind you wind up on Sunday or any day. I'm sorry for you who ever had that impression. He's real every day and takes no effort on our part to produce. You can ask him questions and if you really want an answer he'll give you one. Just know the faulty communication is less on the part of his speach and more on the part of our listening.

  • You sir, are a God. Yet not the kind that must be wound up on Sundays, of course! :P

  • The more I hear of Tull the more I like them I didn't think that was possible

  • Agnostic-Atheist, Quantum-Pantheist, Secular-Humanist Antichrist here [hail Satan, to those who get it]. This song is genius, and really helped me through some tough times, eventually to "coming out" as atheist to my oppressive Xian parents. May we all move beyond the militant mode of thought and find peace. Cheers.

  • @coryskawaffle

    Agreed.

  • Ian really sticks the knife in on this one, great riff too. Anyone for church?

  • After going to Catholic school for twelve years, I can appreciate this song.

  • Fantastic song,of course. It always amazes me though how many otherwise intelligent people fall for the god myth,of any flavour. And there are more god flavours than jelly beans.

  • @PopulationcontrolNow religion is so abused and distorted, it makes non-believers out of good people, or makes it hard to know there is indeed a true God, the Creator of our universe. The reason we are here.

  • @maktorri9

Religion abuses and distorts, regardless of a persons morals. As to the rest of your comment, yet another non thinking believer in the supernatural world of talking snakes and miracles.Good luck with that but the rest of us will carry on moving forward and away from the ridiculous bronze age fairytales that have caused so much harm to so many over the centuries.

  • @PopulationcontrolNow not sure I understand your comment entirely, but I base my personal beliefs on my own experiences. I have had a few miracles in my life and no longer just want to give credit to coincidences. There is a reason why I am here in this dying world. I cannot wait until the next life, but while I am here now, I have to make the best of it if possible. We all have different experiences. That is what many religious people need to learn. We are all different.

  • Oh how I'd love to sing this song to my elementary school's priest...

  • <3 the grunt at 5:00

  • Does anybody remember when this song was used on an episode of Barnaby Jones? A fictional person was supposed to have written it, & a singer that was performing it took credit for writing it, then the person that "wrote" it wanted credit for future work, then the singer killed him. Barnaby busted him, after all, Jed Clampet just might have been smarter than you might think. Sorry, but just had to laugh, knowing who really wrote the song.

  • I remember the ruckus this song in particular raised in my house as a kid. Of course, I played it at the volume it deserved, my dad disagreed and not only broke my album, but banned Tull.

Imagine my delight a few days later when my mom gave me a brand new LP...and a new set of headphones

    Tull=1 Enraged Catholic Dad=0

Jethro Tull is still among the most intelligent, talented bands in the world of rock. Their legacy will outlast the fools who read their own press and believe they're rock stars.

  • The late sixties, early seventies era was full of intelligent thought provoking stuff like this. Nothing compares today.

  • @punditpete you're so right. True musicians like Ian Anderson, Roger Waters or Steve Winwood, etc. just don't really exist anymore.

  • Hey, I am not the kind you have to wind up on sunday or any other fukn day for that matter-im always fukn wound up- defy convention

  • Ian is the most intelligent rock star.... Ever

  • II - Ian Anderson (2007): "...the main tenets of Christianity. So I'm always more than happy to perform in a church, or any place of worship if that place is happy to have me. Some folks think of me as a very irreligious person. Or even assume that it is Atheism which drives me from their recollections of the Aqualung album in 1971. Not so. Not so."

  • I - Ian Anderson (2007): "I'm still as jaundiced and sceptical of some aspects of organised religion as I ever was. Bu, I am, I fancy, a rather spiritual person who is proud to have grown up and been morally educated in a country historically Christian in terms of predominant national faith. In essence, I am somewhere between Deist and Pantheist (Google those terms in case you think this makes me heathen or worse) but feel no sharp practical divide or contradiction between my broad views and..."

  • III - Ian Anderson about Aqualung and religion (2010 interview): "...But then, extreme religious views are just as extreme there as they are (laughs) in some other places that we probably shouldn’t go into."

  • II - Ian Anderson about Aqualung and religion (2010 interview): "...and indeed from the Christian church anywhere else. I think on the whole, people who took the trouble to listen to the lyrics and understand what I might be saying, really understood it wasn’t just a blanket condemnation of Christianity, it was a critical response to some of the ways in which the values of Christianity are sometimes taught to us and presented to us. The only place I had a problem was a little bit in the USA..."

  • I - Ian Anderson about Aqualung and religion (2010 interview): "In the USA was the only place in the world where there was any real condemnation or anger about interpretation of the album Aqualung specifically, and that just happened I suppose in the few Baptist strongholds of the southern states of the USA. Notably, in Italy, it was an album that immediately catapulted Jethro Tull to some considerable level of approval. And I don’t ever recollect any condemnation from the Catholic Church, ..."

  • before i'm through i'd like to say my prayers..

  • After twelve years of Catholic school education I came away with a single thought:

A good man can be nailed to a cross and cursed for no reason at all.

  • @thudar9 word

  • "In your pomp and all your glory you're a poorer man than me,

as you lick the boots of death born out of fear."

    BOOM. Somebody just got told.

  • @TheEndKing Someone just got schooled

  • @ShellRae7836: Hell yeah!

  • One of Jethro Tull's best songs ever! Not only musically but listen how Anderson slams the "bloody Church of England" with a vengeance!! Bloody isn't the half of it-

(Henry VIII folly)...Yes, man has "created god in his own image" but for Christ's sake (and his own) he better start looking for the truth!!

  • oldie but very goodie...

  • This f___ing song still rocks me

  • powerful song. i had religion pushed down my throat. took me several years away those @#$%@#$s to realize that God loves us and that He does have His church on Earth and that are a lot of people who really do love to help each other. What a great thing it is.

so... yah, i feel this song deep inside. ...in your pomp and all your glory, you're a poorer man than me.

The Lord is there for me every minute, every day. Well... nuf said.

  • This song captures the essence of every religion ever invented by man. "In your pomp and all your glory, you're a poorer man than me, as you lick the boots of death born out of fear."

  • This is the last track on the album Aqualung. If you listen to the whole album through there's a lot of symbolism and hinting at the message. But in this song, the last track, he comes right out and says it, "I don't believe you, you have the whole damn thing all wrong." As someone whose struggled with faith for so many years this bold claim never fails to give me the chills. Undoubtedly, the most spiritually influenced album ever recorded, whether you believe it stems from good or evil.

  • BRAVISSIMI,MITICI cosa aggiungere.....DI PIU'!!!

  • such amazing lyrics...ian anderson really is a masterful frontman and singer:D

  • Ian may have been making a statement against organized religion and not against god, but that was then and this is NOW. You want to honor the bleeding-edge spirit of Tull's music in 2010? Say bye-bye to all your Gods, gurus and godesses andsay hello to the brilliant, beautiful world of your own experiencing.

  • What's Jumpin' Off?! FLASHBACK late 60-early 70's; From the bowels of 1 of the worse ghettoes in America-Camden, NJ across from Philly, Me, known as Psychedelic! The Black Brother. • though i walk through the valley of death, with god, jesus and ian, i shall fear no evil!

  • Tull is my Shepherd

    I shall not want

  • Jethro Tull, the only band me and my parents like :D

  • A freemason huh?

  • Interesting indeed. On October 1st on my radio show we are going to debating and discussing conspiracy theories including the role of the Illuminati and the Masons and even the Federal Reserve and the truth of 9-11 (truthers) perhaps you would like to listen in and take part. Please check out the show page which is on my channel description. Thanks

  • beware of gory glory seekers who will use

his name in death---ian anderson --hymn43

  • There are plenty out there...and I know I am guilty of a lot of stuff of which I am not eager to admit. But we wouldn't know what sin evil are had not someone somewhere put a comparison chip into our brains or "guts"

    Guess who.(whom),

Yes, beware the charlatans and false prophets., but when, iamautomaticvman, you find something to believe in outside yourself, don;t dismiss it too quickly. It already believes in you.

    Lovingly,(agape type that is)

  • telsport tom in Utica, good comment , i think your on the mark there , i like jethro , and believe its a personal take on organised religion while the challenges of faith go on in a young soul. The Zubang line was funny though , after i think of Sir Martin Reece , fine tuning of the universe, to 120 decimal places. it is somthing else to stumble on this so if you com bk i hope you see my comments.

  • Thanks.

  • So what you are saying is that you are a Pagan both is your social and spiritual attempts.... Good for you.

  • Jeez theirs a lot of hate in these comments... So ill just say what it means xD

I believe, once again, as with most of the album, Anderson is not criticizing the idea of God, he's criticizing organized religion as a whole, using his experience with the church of England Etc.

This "Pro God Anti-Church" stance can be seen most clearly in the title line (he's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays. Anderson believes in god, he just believes that organized religion has got it wrong.

  • @Dacfu Thanks for your sanity......I was beginning to despair for the human race. Well said.

  • "God" is a high-school student on the planet zuBang who created "earth" as part of a science fair project.

That makes us ALL white mice. Deal with it. Either lead, follow...or get the hell out of the way. Cos this is our one life.

I'm just glad that 'my life' was enriched by Ian Anderson. Cheers!

  • when i was young and they packed me off to school

    i love jetrho tull

    one of my favourite bands

absolutely underrated and know more than ever

  • I liked school to a point, but home schooled my kids and they loved it (not going to school) and my oldest is now in college getting on the honor roll every semester. As Ringo said, "It all comes down to boooks, bloomin boooks."

  • ahh...to be twentysomething and writing and performing anarchist tunes such as this in the 70's. and some of us who went to these concerts were straight enough for the opener to care and listen. By the time Tull came on we were mostly wasted and nodding alongt to tunes we had heard on FM. Who would have thought that years later Youtube would appear and enable us to publicly comment on these days of past. Every time I hear good tunes I want to comment cause nothing now moves me like my generation

  • Indeed my friend...Indeed.

  • interesting isnt it

    well said kdx

makes me wonder what's next eh?

    great song Aqualung 1989

gotta really love Ian for this song...

    :D

    Thanks to you

  • ian anderson really gets it. god is great , but, the domination of organized religion with its rules & and misconstrued ideas.often

push people away the people they are trying to save. but as ian states he's not the kind you haveto wind-up on sunday . sacred is his name forever in my heart. i wrote that. but,i simply love this tune.and the whole album for

that matter .very few bands rock like jethro

    tull.

  • Amen to that iamauto....

    Great lot of comments here

and interesting how many express a love of God and despise the "money priests"

  • @iamautomaticman: i think your taking him out of context... i don't believe what you say... i'm even doubting if you should believer yourself. =D

  • @iamautomaticman Well written 'Automatic Man'. ✔

  • @iamautomaticman beautifully stated!!!

  • @iamautomaticman well i don't know if god exists of if he's great, but its a fact that organized religion and clergy are not good to humanity.

great song nevertheless. i love it

  • @fenrirbr He was much better off then the people who think they know God just because they read a book. Right before God gave me revelation, as i was coming out of the church and the bible this was my favorite song. Then God revealed to me that THE BIBLE IS THE MARK OF THE BEAST. King James born 1566 6th out of stewart authorizd 66 dead history books and called then the word of God. God is a spirit and we have to know him in the spirit, We can;t just read a book. Bible woshipers are satanists.

  • Comment removed

  • another God themed tune. good,no actually an excellent tune. actually one of their better intellectual/make you think tune. Love this jam after it gets started.been awake too long and it probably sounds it. goodnight. rock on Tull and aqualung dude.

  • Jethro Tull for the win!

  • Indeed.

Semi-off-topic: I just lost the game.

  • ...

    You sod.

  • Peace, all Wonder if Ianw2112 means that God is a woman and uses rough lingo, Hoping to maintain civility and high mindedness Let's search to "Old Turtle""a video voiced by Moody Blues Mike Pinder Ian, you too, if you wish and amautomaticman,it would be a good exercise to remember that we are all flawed, and to offer warmth, love and healing to those we think are in error,or who hate us or iour ideas Chrst the boss, was specific,"Love one another"

    Tom in Utica NY

  • iamautomaticman, that was completely heartless and despicable of you! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion! Even if they don't believe in God's love, that doesn't mean you should say something like that to someone!

This entire argument is ridiculous! This is an incredible song that depicts a young man's challenges with finding his own form of faith. Everyone would do well to do the same. No religion has it completely right; that's the glory of having faith in what you believe is right.

  • eingraves--scroll back &read my original

    comment a couple months earlier.

ian has it right right on .and that ianw2112 comment was way too vile 4 me .

if someone is atheist ---fine it's yer life

but , i'll not have some asshole slur --my

LORD and saviour. he was probably some attention seeking bastard anyway

  • hes not that mean trust me no one is cruel enough to create a fucked up universe like this and he is not a woman either how do i know a girl wouldnt fuck things up this bad i like the way mr.g.carlin puts it "hes either imcompetent and maybe, maybe doesnt give a shit"

  • Me too :P

  • haha Tull 1 - Christianity 0

  • Wellllllll would you entertain the idea that Anderson is deeply Christian and just wants to comment on the inconcsistencies between preach and practice today and yesteryear/.. with a mind to holding up a mirror to religion so they can , perhaps ,repent?

How about Tull 1, Religion , coming to bat?

    Tom in Utica New Yorik

    Gd's love to you all

  • The original Jethro Tull stated not to scatter seed but to indiviually plant it in good soil

  • Thank you for the elevated view. Refreshing and upliting.

    Tom in Utica NY

  • Make NO mistake Ian was at odds...... to say the least with "Organized Religion"...

Not anti GOD.... More anti Catholic if you will...

  • @TULLYNOL

Anti-Church. There's many preachers out there who have a Sunday Face and the rest of the week, it's a business. Trust me on that one...I work for a Church!
