Saw them mate twice? That's it? Mine have mated more than that since the start of the video. Now she's riding him! I have 12 zebra finches (6 gray and 6 white), nine of which were from two clutches, and 4 society finches. Is it time to breed my tan society with my brown one? There they go again... His little happy meeps he makes while shaking his tail feathers after getting some is so cool.
The finches I had didn't go into the nest, I moved it yesterday and put a branch in front of it. I just found both of them in the nest :D So it must be okay where I moved it too.
Our couple; Abercrombie and Finch are now on their third round of babies. Abby is always mating with poor Finch. But, they sure make beautiful babies. They seem to prefer the open nest as opposed to the domed one. Plus, it makes it easier to observe and handle the babies as well.
Hi,If you know about them more i have a question and would appreciate if u can help me...
I just got 2 from my friend but both are males, the cage is 20 inches high and 18 wide. Would it be a small place for them if i buy two more female.... is that possible to keep them like that and would they breed or fight??
@izbjeglica3 It won't be small but from my experiences they will most definately fight and squabble over the nests, even if you give them a nest each. Each pair will fight over the best placed nest site and you won't get any young. I would recommend that you place them in seperate cages and let them do their business. Good luck! My Zebra finches breed like crazy and I'm just about to welcome some more little babies in a week's time. :- )
@pigeonandiguana The mum will usually start incubating after the 3rd egg is laid and it takes roughly 12-13 days accordingly for each to hatch. All scenarios differ so wait and see!
ok so i just got some finches and i wanted to know how long intill the baby finches will hatch if you know cause i dont know if the eggs r good or not
i didnt think they could breed in that sort of an open nest. dont know if youll have any luck. I just threw in one of those rounded enclosed sort of nests or one of those small boxes. But getting them to lay eggs isnt to difficult.
s'all good man, they did indeed spawn a LOT of chicks so this kinda nest is quite good. i also find that they like open nests, they're easy to maintain, less stench, and YOU can see everything better as well. :)
i hav 8 finches and i want them to breed. i dont want to waste money buying cages for them to breed, is there any other way? by the way u bought that nest didnt u?
buy one of them nest boxes or baskets like that video or fully enclosed with a little hole. i've heard that you can even use a tin can (cleaned) and add some swamp grass and they'll lay eggs. Good luck!
you just put a nest box and some nesting material in the cage or avairy and they will soon start to breed. i dont know why but my finches are having trouble breeding. they lay the eggs and sit on them, and then they give up. I hope i helped charishhope
My finches just built a nest in an old banksia branch i put in there cage. I notice the hen now ignores nesting material in favor of feathers and softer material. I think she laid the first egg today
how often do u clean the bird nest out, because i hav a cage that has a nestin box in it n i can take it out but if i do then it leaves a big hole in it wer my birds can exape soo i need 2 clean it
you shouldn't take out the nesting box while the finches are nesting..it might make them stop.
just wait until the chicks leave the nest..i agree it can get dirty. if you are able just change the nesting material carefully without removing the box or disturbing them.
i got a white finch. Its a girl i named her juliet. Her friend died a zebra finch named romeo died. I play with Juliet alot and she loves going on my hand and my shoulder XD!
well you simply provide a wooden nest box or a basket like mine..then you go to the pet store and ask for nesting material for small birds. then you put the material in the cage and they build the nest by themselves by bringing the material.
my finches laid three eggs but they won't sit on them! i don't know what's wrong!! should i throw the eggs out? theyve been sitting there for 10 days.
You SUUUURRRREEE? that seems very weird. anyway, if nothing changes in a few days remove them. give them a rest and then they can lay new ones. if it's the first time it may be due to inexperience.
hey. well..if they turn darker that's a good sign, the eggs should hatch very soon!!! i hope they do..if not after about 25 days you can be sure there's nothing to do...and...it's not very good if she sits on them in turns..at least mine sat on all of them...perhaps the nest is too big? anyway good luck!
i also have finches. It is 18 days since the first egg was laid. She will sometimes sit on 2 eggs and leaves the other behind and then will sit on the other 2 eggs and leave the other ones behind. The eggs are starting to turn darker. Does that mean that they are rotten or are they going to be born soon? It is my first time experiencing this. I can use all the help i can get. Thanks in avance
i know this woulndt make sensce now but in the future you should try something called candeling. its when you have a strong light pass through the egg to the point were you can see either veins/embryo or just a white liquid. hope this helps!
it's ALRIGHT, but obviously they won't mate or anything. but it can be nice if you just want to have two birds as pets. OH...you can't have two males and less females though
finches are quite easy to have and breed compared to many other birds. i recomned them to beginers. actually most of the baies were like the father! however in the secon clutch one came out like the mother! :)
it may be because the nest isn't right. when they come out they might accidentally knowck the chicks out. sometimes this happens. there are many reasons why it may happen though. sometimes it's just the parents who aren't a good match. try changin them. if this doesn't work then just don't make them mate.
and another thing. you can only breed birds abouot 2 to 3 times a year. no more...if you do you'll have problems.
I had given the first white female offspring with a normal colored mate and not yet breeding but they are mating... The other one, im still trying to give a crested male pair to breed with her... hopefully they be like their parents when rearing young...
Well, their parents are very good parents... Feeding and taking care of them.. But the killing thing?? I just can't tolerate that... What is happening?
my pair of finches are having a clutch of eggs now, but im not sure how many. And what troubles me is that they mostly kill their chicks about less than a week old... i saw 2 or 3 them on the cage floor. Why IS THIS? r they nervous birds?? They are now living with my parakeets... You can watch my videos here by clicking on my name...
this was the 5th or 6th time now in about a year.. So far i only produced 2 white females.
there's these packets that they sell in stores with all the material you need. just ask for nesting material and they should have it. basicaly it's jut little pieces of string and cotton.
what items did u put so the birds cna put it in there nests? im thinking about getting soem and breeding them looks like kool and fun to have some and u have some nice birds yourself also.
my bengalese finches made one in the bath lol
PS: yes it was dried out
