Because the actor was also busy filming the TV series "Friends" at the same time as making this movie, a double was used for this sequence to allow for some flexibility in the actor's schedule.

It's a sci fi movie that takes place in space, for some reason a crew on a small space ship is ordered to see whats wrong with this mysterious space ship thats not responding to them. They get on board an nobody is there, they find the engine of this mysterious space ship which is a sphere, which cause's horrible events to take place on the space ship. ? what is this movie called?

I think it was hit hard because of the time aspect. It's very trippy and hard to follow at times. This movie for being made in 1998 has amazing CGI affects and VFX. I could see it even rated to effects used in movies from say 2005. It's well done. I love this movie

You can thank the shitty critics for that one. The actors all had to sign a three movie contract so their was a sequel planned but was canceled do to low ratings.
