As already answered by earlier posts, Phil Is Lynott, the late, great leader of This Lizzy. Huey went off and played harmonica with Thin Lizzy, while many of the rest of Clover went on to back up Elvis Costello on his immortal "My Aim Is True" debut album.
Some of Clover ended up in The News, and some became Doobie Brothers.
On the live Lizzy album, Phil announces the band and refers to Huey as "Bluesy Huey Lewis"
Agree with all comments about HLN as a live act, I've been fortunate to have seen many of the big names live (McCartney, Clapton, Elton, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Dire Straits etc) and HLN are right up there with the best. Shame they don't seem to tour the UK anymore, I'd go and see them like a shot.
Bang on Kdrew ... you can hear Phil introducing Mr Lewis on Baby Drives Me Crazy off the Live and Dangerous album .. Clover was the opening act and Huey was in that band .. so your right he's paying homage to the great Thin Lizzy !!! .. glad someone else realizes that
Thanks! You obviously have great taste in music. Any diehard HLN fan knows that they actually were a great rock band that had a much harder sound live.
I had the pleasure of seeing them as a $5 club band.....ahhh, those were the days! Happy holidays!
Thanks kdrew .. I saw HLATN's back in 87 on the FORE tour and it still ranks as one of the best concerts I've attended .. and that includes acts like Pink Floyd , Dire Straits, Rush , and many other big names .. they rocked our arena with 2 hrs and 45 mins of good time rock n roll !!! .. and Happy Holidays back at ya :)
@kdrew "Huey played with Lizzy"? Huh? Certainly you don't mean that Huey played IN Thin Lizzy. You must mean that Huey's band and Thin Lizzy played a concert, or maybe a tour.
@kdrew I stand somewhat corrected. Here are the guest artists for L&D: John Earle - saxophone on "Dancing in the Moonlight" Huey Lewis - harmonica on "Baby Drives Me Crazy"
At the time of the recording, John "Irish" Earle was in Graham Parker & the Rumour, and Huey Lewis was in Clover. Both of these groups were support acts for the tours that made up this album. Earle, born in 1944, died on 7 May 2008 in his native Dublin.
So it turns out that we're both right. Thanks, kdrew!
@kdrew Also, another tiny bit of trivia- John McFee (now with Doobie Brothers) played in Clover with Huey. But you may have already known that. John is a monster musician, to be sure!
@Mooseboy08 Direct quote from Phil Lynott: "Right about this time... I'd like to introduce the band to you. On harmonica... HUEY LEWIS!" If that doesn't mean he played in Thin Lizzy then I don't know what does.
AFAIK while the rest of Clover were hanging out with Elvis Costello Huey was hanging out with Thin Lizzie, and played on the Live and Dagerouse live album. I loved Huey Lewis and the news and still have all their albums!
good this came up, the other version of this song was taken away..... but the other one was better thou! big credits to huey for his dedication to phil

At the end of this song, Huey always looks to the sky and says (or mouths), "Thank You, Phil".

Huey and Phil Lynott were great friends. Huey played on "Lizzys" Live and Dangerous album in 78. Nice tribute Huey. This is top drawer.

Not often that I hear cover versions that I enjoy as much as the original, but what a great job the guys made of this - superb!

It was sad to see the '80s end (and it seemed like in 1990, we'd hardly hear much about HL&TN in the spotlight).
