@akilisatolitot impossible, the moon goes away from earth. each year it travels the distance of a thumb away from earth, 80million years ago the moon was 40.000 kilometers closer and looked extremely huge. you got a positive or a negative type of orbit, positive orbits get closer, the moon is a negative orbit because when Theia and Earth collided a mixture of the planets cores (the moon) popped out and got blasted into space. because it was pushed away it will keep moving away further...
Great videos! Really good teaching. Would you mind sharing what software you use to create the videos? I'm looking at developing some of my own as part of my own teaching...
I like the distance pictures. I see pictures showing the relative size of the planets all the time but rarely ever anything showing the relative distances.
You explained it in a very simple to understand concepts. The explanation in terms relative of relative distance and volume makes it more interesting.
can the moon change its movement in 3 day's,im a security gaurd at nite,i've seen it in a differant spot,3 nites in a row,one nite it rotated and went down in 2 hour's,this is not normal
@trx125tracy69 Well, the moon should rise and set about 50 minutes later each day, so it should appear in a bit different spot each night, if observed at the same time from night to night. You should not see it rotate, though. The same side of the moon always faces the earth.
@Angles786 That's actually really interesting. I've heard stories of people groups who thought the moon was really *really* close, like just above the tree tops. When I look at the moon, I find it believable that people could think it was really close if they weren't schooled to think otherwise.
@Angles786 You also have to realize that the human brain can't comprehend an object that size or a distance that large. Our visual perception system is based on things we may encounter on earth. So when we see a dime-sized structure in the sky our brains tell us it is either a dime-sized structure about about an arm's length away, or perhaps a blimp-sized structure a mile away. We can only judge an object's true size about 1000 feet away, after that we reassign the object as closer and smaller.
As you know, the moon rotates on its axis in such a way that we here on earth only see one side of the moon all the time. Are there any another planet - moon systems that exhibit the same behavior?
@PhilipDrewSmith Yes, there are. Suc as: Phobos, Deimos (Mars), Amalthea, Thebe, Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto (Jupiter), Epimetheus, Janus, Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Titan, Iapetus (Saturn), Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon (Uranus), Triton (Neptun), Charon (Pluto). The name of this phenomenon is synchronous rotation, and it can be "develop" by tidal locking. So I just say: it is not an extraordinary phenomenon, I think.
Where are all the stars? Why isn't there brilliant images of all the stars in space as seen from the Moon? Also, If you look at the surface of the Earth as seen from the Moon, what land mass are we actually looking at? I can't seem to identify what land mass it is. It's certainly not any continent I'm familiar with, as would be expected to see from such a distance.
Google a video called A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon.
@outled Well, the planets orbit the sun. Neils Bohr, in the early 1900's, hypothesized that the electrons orbit the nucleus of the atom in a similar manner, and this became known as the "Bohr model" of the atom. Today we don't think that are actually orbits. Instead, we think that there are regions of space around the nucleus where the electron is more or less likely to be at any given moment, and equations of probability are used to describe their likely location.
@derekowens Hi derek, What software do you use to draw? I mean you get to swap between different colors (which make the presentation very pleasing) very fast.
How do you do that? I mean what software you are using to draw?
@matt92hun Yes, Klingons know that, too, and my students do, too! We're just considering the simple case of a circular orbit, and the earth's orbit is pretty close to being circular.
I thought it was very well done and presented in a very clear and concise manner, despite what others have said in these comments. (Lol) Thank you! :o)
These ype of demonstrations, are really poor at giving people an understanding the size of the two objects. A much better one is a golf ball, and a air ballon on a golf course. If you just think of a plane with nothing but to object of course the plane seems huge, but if you put objects in their in the proportions were use to seeing it`s much easier to get it,
Thanks for uploading. It's really interesting how the Earth and the moon may be gravitationally bound, but they are so different, at least at the surface.
Thanks for posting this. I've been interested in the sun, earth, and moon relationship for a while now. You helped demystify it even more. Thanks again for your concise explanations and helpful graphics.
Hi, derekowen. Keep going.

@robbieYAHU Exactly! It's all a big hoax to make us THINK they went to the moon!
No, seriously, there is an explanation. With no atmosphere, the sunlight is VERY bright on the surface of the moon. The moon's surface is much more brightly lit than earth's. To get a normal looking picture, the aperture and shutter of the camera adjust to let in much less light, and so the stars end up not showing up.
It was faked and that's why it looks faked. If you were going to the moon wouldn't you want a photograph like the one you showed only with yourself in the picture as well with the earth behind you? Of course you would, but there isn't one single photo of any astronaught with the earth in the background . . . Why? because they weren't there.
@derekowens I do think we've been to the moon but I think some moon landing pictures are faked, as you say the sun's brightness is intense up there however when astronauts took pictures with the sun apparently behind them they where still fully visible on the photo's, even on earth this doesn't happen, there was an intense sun flair which scolded africa during the time the astronauts where apparently on the moon, yet even with no atmosphere to protect them they came back good as new...just sayin
@robbieYAHU Think about the last time you took a picture at night outside on Earth. You could see the stars, the stars were there, But did the stars show up on your photograph? No, b/c to capture a picture of a star you have to adjust your shutter speed and while taking pictures on the Moon, they had no reason to make those adjustments in order to get the stars to show up in the pictures. Hope this helps your search. Mythbusters does a great job of explaining it better.
@amy127 ... i dont need to think about it anymore...done that since 1973 !! i KNOW it is a hoax. YOU need to ask questions ....BIGGEST QUESTION must be ...WHY NO SPACE-STATION ON THE MOON for nearly 40 years ?? ANSWER: BECAUSE they cant !!! thats why they put international space station IN orbit !! dont be fooled anymore by the ones trying to hide this issue ... by telling you it is to expensive ..pleeeeeze!!! lol !! they spend billions & send un-manned spacecraft to mars, venus, saturn !!!
@matt92hun ...hehe ..religious fanatic, me? nope i strongly oppose all religion... religion is an evil tool used to control the masses.... but yes i was also deceived for many decades ..... that is why i try to expose "them"
@robbieYAHU From what i know without atmosphere meteors and smaller rocks hit moon without slowing down so even gravels could kill if hit you. And religions are science without equipments and are outdated by now.
@robbieYAHU, You're complaining that they edited out the stars? But why do you say nothing about the alien civilization that they edited out of the landscape? Is it because you're one of the aliens and are just trying to misdirect the ongoing investigation?
"And the Sun runs to its resting place. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing. And We have decreed set phases for the Moon, until it ends up looking like an old palm spathe. It is not for the Sun to overtake the Moon nor for the night to outstrip the day; each one is swimming in a sphere"
"He created the heavens and the Earth with truth. He wraps the night around the day and wraps the day around the night, and has made the Sun and Moon subservient, each one running for a specified term. Is He not indeed the Almighty, the Endlessly Forgiving?"
so with the moon so far away are we sure it is solely responsibe for the earths wobble and tide?
Could the moon just be attached to the same force that makes the tides which has given us the impression that the moon is causing it? i.e electromagnetic field ?
Well, that's a thought, but the forces that cause the tides are well understood. It is primarily the gravity from the moon, to a lesser extent the gravity from the sun, and then a tiny tiny but from other planets. As far as I know, there is not any electromagnetic theory about the tides.
This is moon-related although it's a little off-topic.
There's a mountain of evidence that the Apollo moon missions were faked. I posted a partial summary of it on a science forum. Google "The Naked Scientists". In the "New Theories" section of the forum there's a thread entitled "Did We Land on the Moon?". The summary is on page 15. It's the 7th post from the top.
People who still think they went to the moon simply haven't seen the hoax evidence yet.
What I want to know is where is a planet like ours. I know their is one out their with other people. Kinda like that Gilence planet or whatever it is called. Do you know if their is life out there?
No, that won't happen. The Sun is very stable, and is expected to be stable for about another 4 billion years, so the odds of that happening are essentially zero. There could be a large solar flare with some effects on the weather or on electronic communications, but not as bad as in the movie. It's scary, though, because of the proverbial "grain of truth" - there really are solar flares. The potential danger is highly exaggerated, though.
I like an explanation I heard from an astronomer several years ago. Imagine piling up dirt and rock to make a huge mountain. If it were really *really* huge, it would eventually get squashed under its own weight. The weight on top would literally cause the bottom part to get squashed flat. It's simply because of gravity. Any really big bump on a planet gets squashed flat due to gravity, so we end up a fairly nice sphere.
Great film Dereck. I'm a teacher also, but a new teacher. How did you do this, that is what is this board you are writing on? Is it technology I can use in the classroom?
I'm just writing on a graphics tablet, so I can write with a stylus instead of a mouse, and then I'm doing screen capture to produce a video file, and then the usual splicing and editing and processing. I don't do this in the classroom, though. In class I just a regular whiteboard - not even a Smartboard, just a plain whiteboard.
There are not stars because the picture is a fake, part of NASA's hoax to trick us into thinking that people really went to the moon.
(Just kidding) Stars don't typically show up in photos taken from the moon. There is no atmosphere on the moon, so the sunlight is *very* bright. The camera is set to a high shutter speed to keep the picture from being overexposed. At such high shutter speeds, not enough light from the stars gets in to make them show up.
Interesting information. I saw the video that claims the moonwalk was fake and one of the claims included the lack of stars. Seems you knew what I was referring to!
Thank you so much. I have been searching for a simple explanation and you have provided it. Consider me your student, I'm subscribing and will be looking for more of the same.

So a mega solar flare wont toast out planet like in the movie "the Knowing". With the distance shown in this video it seems unlikely.

Great vid! I am also a teacher and am wondering how you would explain to your kids why the earth is round and not flat!

Is it technology I can use in the classroom?
jgardner7622 2 years ago
I'm just writing on a graphics tablet, so I can write with a stylus instead of a mouse, and then I'm doing screen capture to produce a video file, and then the usual splicing and editing and processing. I don't do this in the classroom, though. In class I just a regular whiteboard - not even a Smartboard, just a plain whiteboard.

Wow, what a great video! Thanks a lot! You should be a teacher then the kids might actually be interested in astronomy. ;-)

I thought "Earthrise" was taken on christmas day by Apollo 8 in 1968.. or is this a different image?
TheFifthApes 2 years ago
Yes, the famous photo by that title was taken from Apollo 8. There were many other similar photos taken on other Apollo missions also.

Where are the stars?
TidePools 2 years ago
There are not stars because the picture is a fake, part of NASA's hoax to trick us into thinking that people really went to the moon.
(Just kidding) Stars don't typically show up in photos taken from the moon. There is no atmosphere on the moon, so the sunlight is *very* bright. The camera is set to a high shutter speed to keep the picture from being overexposed. At such high shutter speeds, not enough light from the stars gets in to make them show up.

Interesting information. I saw the video that claims the moonwalk was fake and one of the claims included the lack of stars. Seems you knew what I was referring to!
