No. Yu Suzuki originally meant Shenmue to be a 16 chapter story. Each game was supposed to be exclusively developed for the Sega Dreamcast. I finished Shenmue on DC but never played Shenmue II. Hopefully I will download it someday :)

You have to play 2 it's awesome. I'm so dissapointed the dream of 16 chapters is going to be cut down if they finish it to the next game finishing it up and calling game one and 2 chapters like 1-9 or some crap. Great game that didn't get the credit it deserved. Epic stuff

When Shenmue was first conceived, it was originally going to be "Virtua Fighter RPG". But they made it more about solving puzzles and the stoeryline, and less fighting. But there aree still elements of VF left.
